Beneteau 54 Review and Oceanis 54 Used Price Guide

Built around three ideas, the cockpit, the owner's cabin and the saloon, and good enough that Boat of the Year judges went looking for flaws in the anchor locker.

The Beneteau 54 through a Boat of the Year judge's notebook

Beneteau said its flagship 54 was designed with three things foremost in mind: the cockpit, the owner's cabin and the main saloon. When Cruising World's Boat of the Year judges inspected hull number two in the fall of 2008, they found plenty of value beyond those three, and the magazine's long review in September 2009 reads like a checklist for anyone considering a Beneteau 54 today.

From across the water, the long horizontal line dominates: a nearly plumb bow, a scoop transom, a waterline of almost 50 ft on a 54 ft 9 in hull and a coachroof that barely rises above the foredeck. Berret-Racoupeau drew the boat and Nauta Design of Milan the interior, which made it the top of a Beneteau range that by then shared one design language from 40 to 54 ft.

Beneteau 54, Oceanis 54 and the unrelated Oceanis Yacht 54

This boat was sold as the Beneteau 54 in the US and the Oceanis 54 in Europe; sailboatdata lists both names for one design first built in 2008. Searches for beneteau 54 for sale will also bring up the Oceanis Yacht 54, a 2020s design by Biscontini Yacht Design with twin rudders and a deck by Lorenzo Argento. The two are completely different boats a decade apart, at very different prices.

The Beneteau 54 was replaced at the top of the Oceanis range by the Oceanis 55 in 2013. Yachting World's test of the 55 noted that Beneteau wanted more cockpit and exterior space than the 54 could offer, which tells you what the newer boat changed. The 54 has a more conventional cockpit, and Beneteau's inventory list shows its mainsheet running to a track rather than to the fixed arch of later Oceanis models.

A 49 ft waterline and a displacement to length of 118

On paper the 54 is a fast cruiser. Cruising World's figures give a displacement of 31,574 lb, 11,000 lb of ballast, a ballast ratio of 0.35, a displacement to length ratio of 118 and a sail area to displacement ratio of 21.3 on 1,329 sq ft of sail. That is a light, long, well powered hull by production cruiser standards.

The test day was light, and the boat showed what those numbers mean: in scarcely more than 6 or 7 knots of wind it close reached at 4.2 knots. Under power the 110 hp Yanmar gave 8.1 knots at 2,600 rpm and 8.6 knots at a fast cruise of 3,400 rpm, with noise of 92 to 94 decibels, in the quietest third of that year's fleet. Genoa winches sit within reach of the twin helms and the cabin top controls are a few uncluttered steps forward, so the judges rated it a well laid out boat to sail short-handed.

What the judges liked below

The saloon combines a 16 ft beam with panoramic fixed portlights in the deck, but avoids feeling cavernous: the galley counter, nav table and dinette backs give places to brace a hip under way. Of all the boats in the 2009 contest, the judges said the 54 had the best headroom for tall sailors, with 87 in in the aft cabins, which step down from the saloon sole.

Judge Stacey Collins liked the galley sink placed aft and outboard of the companionway, close to the centerline so it drains on either tack, and the small routed lip on the molded countertops that keeps water off the wood joints. Ed Sherman praised proper structured mattresses split in two so equipment beneath is easy to reach. Ralph Naranjo singled out the engineering: tie-rod chainplates, stainless keel bolts and lead ballast on the boat they inspected. The interior uses Alpi, a reconstituted wood veneer, with white upholstery.

And what they would change

The judges also listed faults that a buyer should check or fix. The companionway steps are 13 in apart, a stretch for shorter crew. The sliding hatch and louvered doors suit coastal sailing, but offshore crews should add proper drop boards. Hull number two had a double anchor roller but only one hawse hole for the rode, and the chain locker could only be reached through the crew quarters, which makes clearing a jammed chain awkward single-handed.

Below, Sherman found the propeller shaft seal under the aft berth hard to reach, although other engine access points were good. On the plus side, the foredeck has room for a 10 ft dinghy on passage, and the bridgedeck in front of the companionway makes a secure working pit for trimming lines.

Lead or iron, shaft or pod: the spec changed during the run

Not every Beneteau 54 is built the same way. The boat Cruising World inspected had lead ballast and a 110 hp Yanmar. Beneteau's later North American inventory list for the Oceanis 54 specifies a cast iron keel with stainless backing plates and a Yanmar Dock & Go POD 120 joystick package as the engine, with a light displacement of 31,848 lb, a deep draft of 7 ft 5 in with 9,995 lb of ballast and a shoal draft of 5 ft 11 in with 10,998 lb. Its air draft is listed at 76 ft 1 in.

So before you compare prices, confirm the keel material and type, the propulsion system and the draft of the boat in front of you. A pod drive boat is easier to berth but needs a dealer who can service the system, while a shaft drive boat is simpler and cheaper to maintain.

Three or four cabins and a crew cabin in the bow

The standard layout has an owner's suite forward with an island queen and a big head with a separate shower stall, plus two symmetrical aft cabins with 6 ft 11 in of headroom and double berths. A four cabin version splits the forward area into two cabins with two heads. In either case, the sail locker in the bow can be converted into a crew cabin reached by a deck hatch, with a single berth, a hanging locker and a one-piece washroom.

Water capacity of 256 gallons is split between three tanks, and fuel is 125 gallons. The option list included a 7 kVA generator, air conditioning, a 16 gallon per hour watermaker, heating, a removable inner forestay with a staysail furler and teak side decks. Boats that have the generator, air conditioning and watermaker are much easier to live on in the tropics, and much easier to sell.

What a Beneteau 54 for sale costs in 2026

Cruising World's quick look listed the 54 at $460,000 and its full review a basic sailaway price of $575,000. Today, realistic US asking prices for a Beneteau 54 run from about $260,000 for an early boat needing sails and systems work to about $400,000 for a well equipped, carefully maintained example. Most sit between $290,000 and $360,000.

Running a 55 footer is expensive. Slip fees alone can easily exceed $15,000 a year in popular US marinas, and with insurance, haul-out, bottom paint, rigging and systems maintenance, $28,000 to $55,000 a year is a realistic budget.

How much does a Beneteau Oceanis 54 cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$260K to $400K
Yearly running costs$28K to $55K

Cruising World's 2009 review quoted a basic sailaway price of $575,000. Today, values hinge on equipment and use: generator, air conditioning, watermaker, Dock & Go, electric winches and the crew cabin conversion add significantly, while charter use and original sails subtract. With a limited number of 54s in the US, many buyers end up importing from Europe, which adds duty and transport costs to the comparison.

Our verdict on the Beneteau Oceanis 54

The Beneteau 54 is a big, light, easily driven cruiser that earned the respect of Cruising World's sharp-eyed judges. It sails well in light air, motors quietly, offers unmatched headroom and has the details, from the galley sink to the mattresses, that make life aboard easier. The faults are fixable: add drop boards, rethink the chain locker access and check the shaft seal. The bigger issue is variation between boats, from lead keel and shaft drive to iron keel and pods, so buy the specific boat rather than the model. A well equipped 54 is a lot of yacht for the money.
