Beneteau builds Oceanis cruisers, First performance boats and Swift Trawler and Antares powerboats in France. Huge US presence, deep dealer support and a big ex-charter market, from 1990s Farr designs to current flagships.
Benjamin Bénéteau founded his yard in 1884 at Croix-de-Vie on France's Atlantic coast to build sailing fishing trawlers. The pivotal change came in the mid-1960s, when his grandchildren Annette Bénéteau Roux and André Bénéteau moved the company into fiberglass pleasure boats. The First line followed in 1976 with the First 30, establishing Beneteau as a builder of fast, good-looking cruiser-racers.
Groupe Beneteau now owns Jeanneau, Lagoon, Excess, Prestige and several powerboat brands, making it the largest sailboat producer in the world. Beneteau opened a factory in Marion, South Carolina in 1986, which built more than 8,700 boats for the American market before closing in September 2020, when production moved back to France.
The Oceanis line is the core cruising range, with volume-focused hulls and easy handling, and its models tend to follow one another in clear generations. Before the current naming took hold, Bruce Farr's office drew the Beneteau 50, a masthead sloop built from 1995 to 2004. About 200 were made, many of them for charter as the Moorings 503, 504 and 505, and its big water tanks still appeal to liveaboards. Beneteau USA reused the name in 2010 for an unrelated Berret-Racoupeau boat later sold as the Oceanis 50, so check the year before comparing prices.
In the mid-size class, the Finot-Conq designed Beneteau Oceanis 45 of 2011 brought a hard chine, an electric fold-down transom and layouts from two to four cabins, and it sold more than 800 boats before the Beneteau Oceanis 46.1 replaced it in 2018. The 46.1, also by Finot-Conq, added a stepped hull and twin rudders and ran until 2025, when the Oceanis 47 took over. Above it, the Beneteau Oceanis 51.1, a Berret-Racoupeau design, was built from 2017 to 2025 to about 500 hulls before the Oceanis 52 arrived, and the Beneteau Oceanis Yacht 60, launched in 2022, is the sailing flagship designed for an owner couple without crew.
The First range has included small sportboats such as the Beneteau First 27, which came from Beneteau's 2018 purchase of the Slovenian builder Seascape and is now a former model, sold only on the used market.
Beneteau's serious power business splits into two families. The Swift Trawlers are semi-displacement cruisers that can run well above hull speed. The Beneteau Swift Trawler 35 of 2017 reworked the best-selling Swift Trawler 34 around owner feedback, with a single Cummins diesel, two cabins, a dry head and an air draft about seven feet lower, which suits the Great Loop; the Swift Trawler 37 replaced it in 2025. The twin-engine Beneteau Swift Trawler 41, offered from 2019 in Fly and Sedan versions with an aft galley, took over from the Swift Trawler 44 and gave way to the Swift Trawler 43 for 2026.
The Antares name goes back to the Antares 7.50 of 1977 and today means outboard pilothouse boats. The Beneteau Antares 8 is a 26-foot single-outboard pocket cruiser for a couple, first sold as an outboard model in the 2012 generation and refreshed in 2022 with cruising and fishing versions. The Beneteau Antares 9 steps up to twin outboards and two private cabins. It first appeared in 2017 and was redesigned for 2025 on a 23-degree Airstep hull with a queen berth forward. The Gran Turismo and Flyer lines round out the power range.
No brand is easier to own in the US. Beneteau dealers cover both coasts, the Gulf and the Great Lakes, parts are plentiful and nearly every rigger and surveyor knows the boats. The downside is supply. Large numbers of Beneteaus come out of charter fleets in the Caribbean and Florida, which holds down prices on comparable privately owned boats. Expect an Oceanis to lose value faster than a Hallberg-Rassy or a Tartan, but to sell quickly at the right price.
Beneteau uses a molded inner grid bonded to the hull, so condition of that bond matters. The 2014 loss of the First 40.7 Cheeki Rafiki after its keel detached is a reminder to survey any boat with a grounding history carefully.
Beneteau builds in western France, and its former Marion, South Carolina plant closed in September 2020.
Yes for coastal and island cruising. They offer modern design, space and easy ownership, though not the heavy build of premium bluewater brands.
It can save money, but get a full survey covering keel, grid, rudder and engines, and review the charter maintenance logs.
The Swift Trawler 35 is a strong choice thanks to its single engine and lower arch, and the Swift Trawler 41 Sedan suits couples who want twin engines and a low air draft.
Yes. Beneteau builds the Swift Trawler, Antares, Gran Turismo and Flyer ranges alongside its sailboats, from the 26-foot Antares 8 to the twin-engine Swift Trawler models.
