The Beneteau Oceanis 42 opens the range's fifth decade

Beneteau describes the Beneteau Oceanis 42 as opening a new chapter in the strategic 40 ft segment, and as the direct successor to the Oceanis 40.1. It arrives in 2026, the year Beneteau marks 40 years since the first Oceanis of 1986, and the builder uses the launch to stress that most of the range is still built in France by a French workforce. The boat first appeared on Beneteau's website in late summer 2026, and the US site lists it from $375,000 excluding taxes.

The 42 follows the Oceanis 47 and Oceanis 52, the two boats that SAIL described as the start of the eighth generation of the Oceanis line. Cruising World's 2026 Boat of the Year judges praised both bigger boats for their sailing and comfort, and the 42 borrows several of their features, most visibly the helm stations. Marc Lombard Yacht Design drew the naval architecture and Nauta Design handled both the exterior and interior.

How close is it to the Oceanis 40.1?

Very close on paper. Beneteau publishes an LOA of 42 ft 2 in, a beam of 13 ft 11 in, a dry weight of 17,600 lb, drafts of 5 ft 6 in and 7 ft 5 in, 52 gallons of fuel, 62 gallons of water and a 45 hp maximum engine. SAIL's 2021 review of the Oceanis 40.1 listed an LOA of 42 ft 3 in, a beam of 13 ft 9 in, the same 17,600 lb displacement, the same two drafts, the same 52 and 62 gallon tanks and a 45 hp engine. Beneteau has not said on its product page whether the hull is carried over, but the published numbers suggest an evolution of the 40.1 platform rather than a clean-sheet hull.

Where Beneteau does spell out changes, they are in the rig, cockpit and interior. The standard furling mast is 60 cm (about 2 ft) taller than before, and the classic and performance masts are each 30 cm taller, giving more sail area for light air. Bridge clearance is listed at 61 ft 5 in, so check fixed bridges on the Intracoastal Waterway before choosing a taller option.

  • LOA 42 ft 2 in, beam 13 ft 11 in
  • Dry weight 17,600 lb
  • Draft 5 ft 6 in to 7 ft 5 in
  • Fuel 52 gal, water 62 gal
  • CE A10 / B10 / C12

Five layouts and two galleys

Beneteau claims the 42 is the only 40 footer on the market with five layout options: two cabins and one bathroom, three cabins and one bathroom, three cabins and two bathrooms, three cabins and three bathrooms, and a four cabin, two bathroom charter version. It also offers two different interiors, one with an L-shaped galley at the foot of the companionway and one with a linear galley that has a large working surface.

The L-shaped galley is the one Beneteau promotes for sailing. It describes it as a real seafaring galley that stays stable when heeled and connected to the cockpit, with two large sinks, two large bins and 215 liters of refrigeration, which Beneteau says is the largest cooling volume in the 40 ft class. Facing the saloon is a full-size desk for the owner, the mast foot bulkhead carries a bookshelf, and a cabinet at the base of the companionway gathers all of the electrical controls. The owner's cabin has a 160 cm bed that can be reached from both sides.

An aft platform that opens or closes

Nauta reworked the stern into two configurations. Open, the platform becomes an extension of the cockpit and brings the swimming area right up to it. Closed, aft seats create a more secure area and extra seating next to the helmsman, which Beneteau pitches as both safer underway and more sociable at anchor.

The twin helm stations come from the Oceanis 47 and 52, with integrated seats and backrests and ergonomic consoles that carry all the controls, including an engine throttle built into the console. Beneteau's partner list for the boat names Raymarine for electronics, Yanmar for the engine and Elvstrom for sails, and the boat ships with Beneteau's Seanapps connected monitoring and service app.

Oak, thicker edges and three upholstery themes

Beneteau has put visible effort into the finish. The joinery uses sand-colored oak with 2 mm thick wood edges, and the Premium upholstery comes in three themes named Ivory, Sunset and Pacific. Large hull portholes in the saloon are said to give the best sea view on the market, a claim that will be easier to judge once boats reach US docks.

Beneteau has given the smaller Oceanis 30.1, 34.1 and 37.1 a similar treatment in a recent refresh, with new interior materials and more equipment fitted as standard.

What we do not know yet

At the time of writing (October 2026), we have not found an independent sea trial of the Oceanis 42, and Beneteau has not published a waterline length, sail areas, ballast weights or measured performance figures on its US product page. We have left those fields blank rather than guess. For context only, SAIL's test of the predecessor 40.1 recorded 7.5 knots close-hauled in 15 knots of wind, more than 8 knots on a reach and 7.5 knots at 2,400 rpm under power, but those numbers belong to the older boat.

Buyers ordering early should confirm the keel and mast combination, the exact engine model, the tank options and the delivered price of the options they want in writing, since list prices exclude taxes and commissioning.

Not to be confused with the Oceanis 42 CC

Beneteau has used the number 42 before. The Oceanis 42 CC, also sold in the US as the Beneteau 42 CC, was a Groupe Finot center cockpit cruiser built from about 2002 to 2007, with a counter stern, a hydraulic fold-down boarding platform and a steering wheel on the forward cockpit bulkhead. The Beneteau 423 (Oceanis Clipper 423) of 2002 was an aft cockpit 42 footer. Neither shares anything with the 2026 boat beyond the number, and both sell for a fraction of its price on the used market.

Figures come from builder documentation and independent tests where available. Displacement is usually quoted light, so a loaded cruising boat will weigh more. Compare these specs with another model.

How much does a Beneteau Oceanis 42 cost?

New, typical sail-away$375K to $475K
Used, typical asking$340K to $430K
Yearly running costs$14K to $28K

Beneteau's US site lists the Oceanis 42 from $375,000 before taxes; sails, mast choice, electronics, the layout and commissioning will push a cruising-ready boat well above that, so our upper figure is an estimate for a typical well-equipped sail-away boat. There is no brokerage market yet. The used range is our estimate of where nearly new boats and dealer demonstrators are likely to trade, and should be treated as a guide only.

Our verdict on the Beneteau Oceanis 42

The Beneteau Oceanis 42 looks like a careful evolution rather than a revolution. Its published dimensions sit almost exactly on top of the well-liked Oceanis 40.1, and Beneteau has spent its effort where owners notice it: taller rigs, better helm stations, a galley built for sea and a finish that aims higher than before. Until independent tests appear, treat it as a refined 40.1 with more choice of layout, and compare its delivered price with a nearly new 40.1 before signing.
