The Beneteau Oceanis 35 is a 34 ft 3 in Finot-Conq cruiser launched for 2015 with Day Sailer, Week Ender and Cruiser versions, a removable forward bulkhead and twin rudders. It became the Oceanis 35.1 in 2017.

Best for
  • Young families who want a boat that can change with them
  • Coastal cruising and long weekends
  • Day sailing with friends
  • Shoal-water sailors who choose the centerboard

The Oceanis 35 and the space you actually use

Yachting Monthly framed the oceanis 35 with a simple question: if two of you sail a 35 ft boat, how much of it sits behind a bulkhead unused? Beneteau's answer, first tried on the Oceanis 38, was a boat sold in three trim levels with a forward bulkhead that can be removed so the forecabin and saloon become one space. The 35 brought the idea down a size for the 2015 model year, and SAIL called it a great starter boat for young couples and families who want a boat that can evolve with them.

Finot-Conq drew the hull and Nauta Design the deck and interior. It was built in France, launched alongside the Oceanis 60 and the First 22 in Beneteau's 2015 lineup, and sailboatdata notes that it was renamed and updated as the Oceanis 35.1, which first appeared in 2017. That makes the original 35 a short-run boat, mostly 2014 to 2016 builds.

Which of the three versions is on the dock?

Beneteau's January 2016 equipment list explains the differences. The Day Sailer is the bare boat: 9.99 m overall, cold pressurized water only, no fitted galley pack, and an open forward area. The Week Ender adds hot water and two or three convertible cabins. The Cruiser is the one most people want, with a fitted galley including a two-burner gas cooker and a 130 liter front-opening 12 volt fridge, and a private forecabin. SAIL counted five layout plans across the three versions and noted that on the Oceanis 38 the Cruiser had proved by far the most popular, the only one with a proper stove.

The removable bulkhead is real but not quick. Yachting Monthly found it is a four-part panel held by 12 bolts and three clips, taking two people about half an hour, and the starboard hanging locker has to come out as well. A curtain divider was the easier option. Many units are freestanding modules that can be added or removed later, which is clever but means some furniture is not fixed to the hull.

A 9.70 m waterline on a 9.97 m hull

The hull is 9.97 m long with a 9.70 m (31 ft 10 in) waterline, a 3.72 m (12 ft 2 in) beam and a hard chine aft that carries volume into the aft cabins. Beneteau quotes 5,207 kg light for the Day Sailer and 5,533 kg (12,198 lb) for the Cruiser, both with the deep keel. Three keels were offered: a deep T keel of 1.85 m with 1,559 kg of iron, a shoal L keel of 1.45 m with 1,825 kg, and a keel and centerboard version drawing 1.15 m up and 2.30 m down.

SAIL's numbers give a sail area to displacement ratio of about 18 and a displacement to length ratio of 159, with ballast at 30 percent for the deep keel and 35 percent for the shoal. Twin stainless-stocked rudders keep grip when the wide stern heels, and the twin wheels sit well outboard.

Chesapeake and Palma: two tests, two moods

SAIL sailed a shoal keel 35 on Chesapeake Bay in 15 to 20 knots true with gusts to 35 apparent, with an in-mast furling Elvstrom main and a rig that had not yet been tuned. It still reached 7 knots close to beam reaching with the main partly rolled, held 6.8 knots close-hauled at 40 degrees apparent, dropped to 5.4 when pinched to 35, and made 5.4 knots on a broad reach under working sail. The helm was stable with a wide groove, and form stability kept heel moderate.

Yachting Monthly's test off Palma began in a flat calm. In 15 knots apparent the boat made 5.4 knots, which the tester called alright but nothing to shout about; at 17 to 18 knots it changed gear and reached 6.8. Under asymmetric at 75 degrees off 10.2 knots apparent it made 6.5. The sour note was the steering, which felt like helming through custard even with the autopilot ram disconnected, probably an over-tightened system on a new boat. When the same tester later sailed a used 35.1, the helm was light and responsive.

Arch or no arch, and where the mainsheet ends up

The composite arch over the cockpit is an option on most versions. With it, the mainsheet is sheeted to the arch on a bridle instead of a traveler and led to the port coachroof winch, which clears the cockpit and adds handholds but takes main trim away from the helm. Without it, the sheet comes to a fixed point on the cockpit floor, which rules out the deluxe cockpit table. Yachting Monthly found friction in the arch-led sheet on its test boat.

Aft, the transom folds down into a 2.60 by 0.70 m platform with a telescopic ladder, and there is a liferaft locker just forward of it. Two banks of Spinlock clutches serve a pair of Harken winches beside the companionway, while the Harken 40 primaries sit by the wheels. Storage depends on layout: the single aft cabin boat gets an enormous starboard cockpit locker, the twin cabin boat only lazarettes and a shallow locker. The cockpit sole is raised, just 35 cm below deck level, and the bench seats are 1.50 m long.

Modular furniture, and the finish that came with it

Below, light Alpi oak and large hull windows make the 35 bright and open, and SAIL loved the aft stateroom with its athwartship double and cross ventilation, plus a head with separate toilet and shower compartments. The forward berth is 1.75 by 2.00 m, the aft berth 1.73 by 1.98 m in the single cabin plan, and saloon headroom is 1.90 m. The chart table is aft facing at the end of the L-shaped settee, 77 by 50 cm with a gas strut lid, and the linear galley runs along the starboard side.

Yachting Monthly was less charmed by the details: bottom-hinged lockers with cord stops, gaps behind freestanding units, plastic screw covers on the injected deck liner, square furniture corners and few grabrails. SAIL made a similar point more gently, saying these are not seagoing interiors, with bare-minimum electrics and tankage of 130 liters each of fuel and water, and that they work best at anchor or in moderate conditions.

20 hp standard, 30 hp worth having

The standard engine is a 20 hp Yanmar on a saildrive, with a 30 hp Yanmar optional and included in the Sail Away package. SAIL's test boat had the 30 hp and the reviewer was glad of it: motoring into 18 knots and a chop it made 7 knots at 3,800 rpm, 5.4 at 2,700 and 4.3 at 2,400. Yachting Monthly's flat-water boat with the smaller Yanmar 3YM20 made 4.8 knots at 2,000 rpm and 5.7 at 2,500.

Engine access is excellent, with three access points around the companionway and the primary fuel filter on its own panel. With twin rudders there is little prop wash over the blades, so slow-speed handling relies on way through the water; SAIL could still spin the boat in a length.

Buying a 2015 or 2016 Beneteau Oceanis 35 for sale

In 2026 a realistic US range is about $95,000 to $145,000, but version and equipment matter more than year. Target a Cruiser with the 30 hp engine, the electricity pack and a single aft cabin if you want cockpit stowage. Ex-charter boats from Croatia and Greece are the cheapest and often have the 20 hp engine and three cabins. If budget allows, compare with an early Oceanis 35.1, which keeps the hull but swaps the removable bulkhead for double doors and adds an L-galley option. Annual running costs are about $9,000 to $17,000.

Our verdict on the Beneteau Oceanis 35

The oceanis 35 is a clever idea that works best in its most conventional form. As a Cruiser with the bigger engine and one aft cabin, it is a bright, stable, easy boat with a huge cockpit locker and a better sailing feel in a breeze than its volume suggests. The modular pieces, the bare Day Sailer spec and a finish that does not match Beneteau's best are the compromises. Pick the version carefully, check the steering, and it makes a very livable coastal cruiser at a fair used price.
