Felci-designed 46-footer launched at Cannes in 2015 and later sold simply as the Dufour 460. Hard chine, 14 ft 9 in beam, three or four cabins, 55 hp saildrive. A strong used buy for coastal cruising families.

Best for
  • Families who entertain at anchor
  • Coastal and island cruising
  • Couples who want a self-tacking jib
  • Charter owners moving into ownership

Designed for the hour after the anchor goes down

Most builders say their boats do everything. With the Dufour 460 Grand Large, the French yard was unusually honest about its buyer: an experienced sailor who cruises mostly along the coast, wants the strength and tankage for an occasional offshore leg, and cares a great deal about entertaining. Cruising World's reviewer summed it up as a boat for people who, once the hook is down, had better be ready to party.

The dufour 460 grand large made its debut at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2015 as the seventh model in the Grand Large line, then reached the US through the Annapolis show. Around 2019 Dufour dropped the Grand Large suffix and sold it simply as the Dufour 460, which is why US listings appear under both names and the shorthand dufour 460 gl. It left the range when the Dufour 470 arrived for 2021.

A galley built into the forward bulkhead

The interior trick that defines the 460 GL is the galley. Instead of running along one side of the saloon, it spans the full beam at the forward end, effectively forming the bulkhead between the saloon and the owner's cabin. That frees the widest part of the boat for people rather than appliances: a small settee to port with space for a wine rack or flat-screen behind it, a dining table to starboard with seating on three sides, and a navigation desk on a sliding track that can face forward or aft and tilt to stay level when the boat heels.

The owner's cabin forward has a large queen berth with access from both sides and a split arrangement, shower stall to port and toilet compartment to starboard. A second head sits to port aft of the saloon and two double cabins fill the stern. The mast's compression post lands in the owner's cabin rather than the saloon, which keeps the social space open.

  • 3 cabins and 2 heads with forward galley (the usual owner choice)
  • 3 cabins and 1 head (early Cruising World configuration list)
  • 3 cabins and 3 heads
  • 4 cabins and 4 heads with longitudinal galley, aimed at charter

The second kitchen on the transom

Aft, Dufour built a pop-up outdoor galley into the helmsman's seat, with a grill, a sink and counter space. You stand on the fold-down transom to use it, so the cook stays outside with the crew instead of heating up the cabin. It sounds like a gimmick until you have grilled dinner at anchor in July without filling the boat with smoke. Cruising World called the execution excellent.

The rest of the cockpit is conventional twin-wheel Dufour: instruments in the pedestals, a chart plotter at the aft end of the central table, a liferaft locker under a step behind the starboard wheel and adjustable foot braces at each helm. A double-ended German-style mainsheet runs to winches next to the helms, while the traveler sits forward of the dodger and its controls, the halyards and reefing lines go to the coachroof.

Chine, sprit and a self-tacking jib

Felci gave the 460 GL a hard chine aft that helps carry its 14 ft 9 in beam well back, plus tall freeboard, a plumb bow, a low coachroof and three horizontal hull windows per side. In person the boat looks bigger than 46 feet, and below it feels it. A fixed bowsprit is standard, with the furler mounted in the middle and a strong padeye at the tip for an asymmetric or Code 0.

The standard headsail is a self-tacking jib on its own track just forward of the deck-stepped mast, which suits couples. Tracks for a 135 percent overlapping genoa were already installed at the factory, so converting a self-tacker boat later is simple. Builder data give 52.8 square meters of mainsail and 47 of genoa, and the shrouds sit well outboard so the walk forward is clear.

What it did in 3 knots of wind

Cruising World tested the boat on a nearly windless Chesapeake day with just 3 to 4 knots of breeze. Even so, the 460 sailed close-hauled at about wind speed, making 3.5 knots in the lulls and 4.5 knots when a little more pressure arrived, with standard Elvstrom Dacron sails. The Dufour representative on board recommended a Code 0 for exactly those conditions, and so do we: on a boat with a self-tacker, a furling reacher on the sprit is the single best upgrade for light-air coastal cruising.

There are no published motoring figures from the US tests. With 55 hp on a saildrive and about 10.8 tonnes of light displacement, expect a quiet 6.5 to 7 knot cruise, but check the engine hours and service history rather than relying on a broker's numbers.

Where the 460 GL falls short

Cruising World was clear that the boat is not aimed at long-range liveaboard cruising, and the numbers agree. Fuel is 66 gallons and water 140 gallons, adequate for coastal hops and a Bermuda run but thin for a couple living aboard for months without a watermaker. The forward galley is great at anchor and less convenient at sea, because it puts the cook as far from the companionway as possible.

The hull itself is a hand-laid solid laminate with an injection-molded foam-cored deck, a counter-molded hull bottom and floors laminated to the hull. That is straightforward production building, not offshore overkill. Treat the boat as a very capable coastal and island cruiser and it will reward you; plan an ocean crossing and you will want extra water, an upgraded autopilot and a storm sail plan.

460 GL, 455 or 470 on the used market

Searches for a Dufour in the mid-40s turn up three generations that are easy to mix up. The 455 Grand Large of 2005 to 2010 is an older, narrower boat with a longitudinal galley and the mainsheet controls at the companionway. The 460 GL is the 2015 to 2020 boat covered here, with the forward galley, transom kitchen and self-tacker. The Dufour 470 of 2021 onward replaced it, adds Easy, Ocean and Performance packages and weighs considerably more.

In between came the 445 Grand Large and 450 Grand Large, which carry the same hull length class but a different deck and interior. Always confirm the hull identification number and build year, because some listings simply say Dufour 46.

Budget, resale and who sells them

Asking prices in 2026 run from roughly $230,000 for an early four-cabin boat to about $360,000 for a well-optioned 2020 three-cabin boat. Annual costs for a 46-foot slip, insurance, haul-out, saildrive service and routine maintenance run about $18,000 to $36,000, with the upper end reflecting generator and air conditioning upkeep on a fully loaded example.

Dufour's US representation has changed hands over the years, with dealers on both coasts, so check who will support warranty items and parts in your area before buying. Parts commonality with the 460's Grand Large siblings, which share Felci detailing and many suppliers, helps.

How much does a Dufour 460 Grand Large cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$230K to $360K
Yearly running costs$18K to $36K

Cruising World put the base boat at around $300,000 and its fully equipped test boat, with electric winches, generator, air conditioning and electronics, at a little over $400,000. Those options still drive used values. Owner-spec three-cabin boats with the cockpit galley and shoal keel sell fastest in the US; four-cabin ex-charter boats sit at the bottom of the range.

Our verdict on the Dufour 460 Grand Large

Buy a Dufour 460 Grand Large if your cruising is mostly coastal, you host friends often and you want a boat a couple can sail with a self-tacker. Skip it if you are planning to live aboard far from fuel docks, because the tanks and the forward galley are tuned for anchorages, not ocean passages. Within its brief it is one of the cleverest 46-footers of its decade, and used prices well under $360,000 make it a better buy now than it was new.
