Why Elan rebuilt its best-selling cruiser as the Impression 45.1

By 2019 Elan's 45 ft Impression was the backbone of its cruising range and a fixture of Adriatic charter fleets. Rather than start over, the yard's R&D team kept the proven Rob Humphreys hull and redesigned everything that a buyer touches: transom, cockpit, saloon and joinery. The Elan Impression 45.1 was presented at a launch event in July 2019, Elan's 70th anniversary year for its boat division, and was nominated for European Yacht of the Year 2020 in the Family Cruiser category.

Cruising World's Boat of the Year judges sailed it after the Annapolis show that October. The 45.1 is therefore easy to place: a 44 ft 4 in, 13 m hull, four-cabin or three-cabin deck-saloon cruiser that sits between the Impression 40.1 and the Impression 50.1, built until the new Impression 43 replaced the 40.1 and 45.1 around 2023.

What changed from the Impression 45

Most of the updates borrow from the GT5, Elan's first Grand Tourer. Spotting a 45.1 is simple: look for the vertical transom and the extra window in each aft cabin.

  • Plumb, vertical transom replacing the raked stern, giving roomier aft cabins
  • Longer and wider cockpit with twin wheels and a split drop-leaf table
  • Two cockpit boxes aft of the helms that can hold a grill, sink or fridge
  • Choice of small swim platform with open transom or large platform with closed transom
  • New window lighting each aft cabin
  • Galley moved forward and inline to starboard, freeing space for a bigger nav area
  • Iroko veneer and solid iroko trim in natural or whitened finish
  • Elan's DAME award-winning control panel with Simarine digital switching

A cockpit that converts to sun pads or sea berths

Forward of the wheels sit two long drop-leaf tables side by side. Fold the inboard leaves and there is a clear centerline path from transom to companionway with the stainless frames acting as handrails; raise them and the tables seat eight. The outboard leaves lock horizontally at seat level to make two large sun loungers, which BOTY judge Dan Spurr noted would also serve as secure sea berths for an off-watch crew. Helmsmen can sit on teak-covered seats outboard of each wheel to watch the genoa telltales, or on the teak-topped boxes behind the helms facing forward.

There are compromises. Cruising World's editor felt trapped when seated at the forward end of a table, and the tables limit access to the cabin-top winches while sailing. Dodger handles, beefy teak toerails and numerous handholds make moving on deck feel secure, and a deep chain locker with a stainless bow fitting suits cruisers who anchor.

Inline galley, iroko joinery and the four-cabin question

The saloon is bright thanks to hull ports and overhead hatches. To port at the foot of the companionway is a nav desk with a fold-out seat; opposite is a head with a stall shower. A large dining table with U-shaped seating fills the port side, and a centerline bench has an articulating backrest that either completes the dinette or locks to brace the cook at the inline starboard galley. Two front-opening fridges sit at the aft end of the galley next to the stove and oven, with the sink and counter forward where motion is least, and two stacked hull ports give the cook a view out.

Forward, the three-cabin version has an owner's cabin with a head to port and a separate shower to starboard, plus generous storage. The four-cabin version swaps the head and hanging locker for a small bunk cabin, and the two forward cabins share the shower compartment. Elan aimed the four-cabin plan at charter and the three-cabin plan at private owners and bluewater cruisers. Judges found the joinery thorough, though not every end grain was sealed.

Annapolis sea trial: light air and brisk motoring

The BOTY sail took place in only 6 to 7 knots of wind on calm water. The 45.1 made just over 4 knots close-hauled in about 7 knots, another knot or so in an 8.5 knot puff, and 3.5 knots on a reach. The single rudder stayed responsive at those speeds, and testers felt the boat would be nimble with more breeze. Under power it is quick for a cruiser: 8.1 knots at a 2,400 rpm cruise and 8.5 knots at 2,800 rpm with the optional 75 hp Volvo.

Sail area is 99.3 m2 with the full-batten main and 52 m2 genoa, a modest but adequate plan for a 10.8 tonne boat. Sailboatdata gives a sail area to displacement ratio of about 21 and displacement to length of about 194, reasonable numbers for a family cruiser that will often carry an in-mast furling main.

Build details the judges checked

Elan infuses its hulls, with solid glass below the waterline and foam coring above, and the decks are hand-laid with balsa core. Hull and deck are glued, screwed and laminated together from inside, and bulkheads are tabbed and laminated in place, a feature BOTY judge Ralph Naranjo singled out. Judge Ed Sherman liked the digital switching, developed by Elan with Slovenian electronics company Simarine: every circuit runs from a touchscreen at the nav desk, with manual backup switches for redundancy.

Standard tankage is 215 liters (56 gallons) of fuel and 300 liters (79 gallons) of water, and a 572 liter (151 gallon) water option makes longer passages realistic. Holding tank capacity was quoted at 100 liters.

Ex-charter or private: reading an Impression 45.1 listing

Most 45.1s were sold into charter fleets in Croatia, Greece and Turkey, and that shapes the used market. A typical ex-charter boat is four-cabin, shoal or standard keel, in-mast furling, Dacron sails, minimal electronics and high engine hours. A private boat is more often three-cabin with a generator, air conditioning, electric winches and a bow thruster. Recent European asking prices of 160,000 to 255,000 euros reflect that split more than the model year, so US buyers should expect about $185,000 to $290,000 once a boat is imported and commissioned.

Charter use is not a reason to walk away. These boats were built for it, and a well-managed fleet boat with documented maintenance can be good value, but budget for new sails, upholstery and a thorough systems refit.

Ownership outlook after Elan's 2025 reset

Elan said in November 2025 that it will not continue the Impression range and is moving to large carbon yachts. Owners of a 45.1 still benefit from a big fleet of sister ships on the same hull, a widespread charter-trained service network around the Adriatic and mainstream components. Annual costs in a US marina typically run $17,000 to $36,000 including insurance, haul-out, sail and canvas replacement reserves and engine service.

Our verdict on the Elan Impression 45.1

The Elan Impression 45.1 is an honest family cruiser built on a hull with two decades of charter mileage behind it, refreshed with a modern transom, a clever cockpit and a far better interior. It will not thrill in light air, especially with a furling main, but it is comfortable, quick under power and easy for two people to manage, and its construction drew praise from demanding judges. The smartest buys are privately owned three-cabin boats or well-documented ex-charter boats priced to allow a sail and upholstery refresh. With Elan gone from this market, value now depends on condition and paperwork, not on the badge.
