The Elan E6 was built to be the lightest, stiffest 47-footer in production
Elan set itself a blunt target for the Elan E6: the fastest, lightest and stiffest production performance cruiser of its size. To get there it brought in three partners. Humphreys Yacht Design ran CFD studies that produced a chined hull with minimal wetted surface when heeled, a tall rig and a deep T-keel. Gurit, the composite engineering specialist, helped push Elan's vacuum infusion further, integrating the inner structure, stringers and supports into a single infused hull. Pininfarina, better known for Ferraris and Maseratis, styled the exterior and interior with a deliberately minimal hand.
The result weighs 11,250 kg on a 14.1 m (46 ft 3 in) hull, 15.3 m (50 ft 2 in) overall with its bowsprit. The first boat launched in March 2022 and quickly collected design honors: an International Yacht and Aviation award, a Red Dot product design award, a British Yachting Awards nomination as Performance Yacht of the Year and a European Yacht of the Year nomination in the performance cruiser class.
Two different boats have carried the E6 name
Elan reused model names when it reorganized its range in the mid 2010s, and the E6 badge is a trap for buyers. Before the 2022 flagship, boat-specs.com lists an Elan E6 built from 2017 to 2019 with a 13.6 m (44 ft 7 in) hull, 4.36 m beam, 11,300 kg displacement and a rig whose measurements match the Elan 450 that Humphreys drew in 2008, the semi-chined, twin-rudder 45-footer Yachting World described as looking like the base of an iron. In the same way the Elan 400 became the E5 and the Elan 350 lineage became the E4.
Telling them apart is easy once you know: the earlier boat is about 44 ft 7 in, carries the Elan 450 deck with its retractable sprit and self-tacking jib, and is priced like a 2010s 45-footer. The 2022 E6 is over 50 ft with the bowsprit, has Pininfarina's recessed hull windows, and costs several times as much. Always check hull length and build year on the documentation.
Flared topsides over a narrow waterline
Rupert Holmes, testing for Yachting World, explained the shape: hull sections aft flare markedly above a relatively narrow waterline, with a high chine aft of midships that digs in at 7 to 8 degrees of heel and gives a large boost in form stability. Upright, the wetted surface is small, which helps light-air speed; heeled, the boat stiffens quickly. Design calculations put the standard boat on the plane in roughly 17 to 22 knots of true wind, and Rob Humphreys predicted the performance version could sail at 8 knots upwind in 12 knots and reach double figures downwind in the mid teens.
Generous twin rudders give plenty of grip, though the lee quarter wave is noisy when the boat is powered up and well heeled. Steering uses twin wire systems from each wheel, so if one breaks the other still works, and Elan considered an emergency tiller unnecessary.
Three rigs, three keels and a draft question
Elan offered the E6 with a standard aluminum mast, a taller performance aluminum mast and a tall carbon spar with lighter deck furniture. Keels came in a 2.80 m (9 ft 2 in) torpedo standard, a 2.40 m (7 ft 10 in) shoal option and a deeper, lighter keel of about 2.85 to 2.95 m paired with the carbon rig, which cuts displacement without losing righting moment. That combination is the one to find if you want to plane early.
The catch is depth. Even the shoal keel draws almost 8 ft, which rules out much of the Bahamas, the Chesapeake's smaller creeks and many US marinas. Yachting World called draft the E6's main drawback outside the Mediterranean. There was also no self-tacking jib option: Elan aimed the boat at experienced sailors, with a through-deck furler as standard and a Code 0 or large gennaker for reaching.
What the E6 did on test in Mediterranean breezes
Holmes sailed the E6 over three days with the taller aluminum rig, OneSails inventory and the 2.8 m keel, on a boat heavier than standard thanks to Flexiteek decks, air conditioning, extra tankage and helm-seat boxes with fridge and barbecue. In 12 to 13 knots true and a short reflected chop he made 6.7 to 6.8 knots close-hauled at 45 to 50 degrees true, and 7.8 to 8.0 knots on a true beam reach under main and jib. In 9 to 10 knots the boat still made 6.5 knots upwind, and with a Code 0 at 125 to 130 degrees true it held 7.5 to 8 knots.
Most telling was the lightest day: in only 6 to 8 knots of breeze it reached within a knot of wind speed and made just over 5 knots upwind at 32 degrees apparent in 6 knots. With the taller rig the test boat needed its first reef at 14 to 15 knots true, which Selden's single-line reefing made simple, although only one electric winch meant more grinding than on most new 47-footers.
A cockpit set up for a crew, not a lone watchkeeper
The deck layout was refined by testing with an Olympic sailing team on a full-scale model, and it shows. There is a pit area at the companionway for halyards and reefing lines, a recessed traveller on the cockpit sole for the German mainsheet controlled from winches just ahead of the wheels, and primaries outboard of the benches. Three sets of Harken winches let a crew spread out. That is ideal for owners who race or sail with friends, less so for a solo watch at night, who must move between mainsheet, halyards and headsail sheets.
Helm positions are excellent, with big folding foot chocks and seats on the side deck or optional aft benches. Holmes found too little purchase on the traveller and the towable headsail cars in a breeze, and noted limited foot bracing when well heeled, especially with the optional twin removable cockpit tables on carbon legs fitted. Bathing platform choices are a small fold-up version or a larger one that stands about 18 in above the cockpit sole.
Pininfarina below decks
The saloon is large, with a substantial folding table and roughly equal areas of white surfaces and natural oak veneer, though slender coachroof and hull windows make it less bright than the deck-saloon Impression boats. Pininfarina's touches are functional: the L-shaped galley's inboard worktop tapers toward the centerline to free floor space at the companionway, and the hull portlights are recessed so fenders do not press on the glass. Fiddles are low for a performance boat, and the swivelling chart table on the port settee blocks that settee as a sea berth when in use.
In the three-cabin version the forward owner's cabin has a peninsula bed, a big hanging locker and a very large en suite with folding screens to create a shower. The four-cabin option adds a Pullman bunk cabin forward of the main bulkhead and a smaller shared head. A technical space in the tunnel between the aft cabins houses optional air conditioning, a generator and a watermaker, and a Simarine digital switching panel with manual overrides runs the electrics.
Elan E6 for sale, and what to pay
Production was short. Elan paused yacht building after 2024 and said in November 2025 that the E line would not continue, so there are only a few seasons of E6s, most of them in European waters and many in Croatia. Recent asking prices from 300,000 to 470,000 euros suggest US buyers should expect roughly $380,000 to $560,000 for a sorted boat, more for a carbon-rigged example with a fresh laminated inventory. Check whether a boat has been in charter, which is common in Croatia, before comparing prices.

How much does a Elan E6 cost?
Elan announced the E6 at 379,900 euros ex VAT in early 2022, and Yachting World's heavily optioned 2023 test boat was about 608,000 GBP. Recent European asking prices for 2022 to 2024 boats range from about 300,000 to 470,000 euros, with rig choice (carbon versus aluminum), sail inventory, keel and comfort options such as air conditioning and a generator making the difference. Expect a premium for performance-spec boats in the US because so few were imported.

Our verdict on the Elan E6
The Elan E6 is one of the most convincing performance cruisers of the early 2020s: genuinely quick in light air, stiff and controllable when the breeze arrives, and built with an infused structure that its competitors struggle to match at the price. Pininfarina's styling is restrained and mostly practical, and the interior is generous for a boat this light. The compromises are real, though. It needs a crew to get the best from its cockpit, there is no self-tacking jib, and draft makes it a poor fit for thin-water cruising. For a buyer with deep water, friends to sail with and an appetite for speed, a well-specified E6 is a strong buy, especially since Elan's exit from this market means there will be no newer model.
