Nautor has built three Swan 48s. The current Frers design, launched in 2019 and updated as the MkII in 2023, is a 48-foot performance cruiser with a 75 hp saildrive and three cabins. Older S&S and Frers boats offer classic value.

Which Swan 48 is for sale? Check the year first
Anyone browsing Swan 48 for sale listings quickly finds asking prices that range from under $200,000 to well over $1.5 million. That is not a typo. Nautor has used the 48 name for three different yachts: a Sparkman and Stephens design built from 1971 to 1975, a German Frers design built from 1995 to 2003, and the current Frers Swan 48 launched in 2019 and updated as the MkII in 2023.
Each is a fine boat, but they belong to different eras, budgets and owners. This guide treats the current model as the main subject, because it is in production and makes up most of the high-value listings, then explains where the older two fit for buyers who want a Swan for much less money.
The 2019 Frers Swan 48, a performance cruiser for couples
German Frers has drawn Swans since the 1980s, and the 2019 Swan 48 shows how far the brand has moved. The hull is 48 feet 6 inches long with a waterline of 45 feet 6 inches, which means almost no overhang and a very long sailing length. Beam is just over 15 feet, carried well aft, and the standard keel draws 2.40 meters, about 7 feet 10 inches. Overall length including the bowsprit is 15.78 meters.
Light displacement is 15,000 kilograms (33,070 pounds), with 5,200 kilograms of ballast for a ratio of about 35 percent. That gives a displacement to length ratio of roughly 156 and, with a 77 square meter main and 62.5 square meter jib, a sail area to displacement ratio of about 23. Those are performance numbers, comfortably faster than mainstream 48-foot cruisers and close to dedicated racer-cruisers.
The boat's mission is clear: a Swan that a couple can sail alone, that takes friends for a week, and that can still race in Swan regattas. More than 50 were sold before the MkII arrived, which makes it one of Nautor's most successful modern models.
- Hull length 14.78 m (48 ft 6 in), LWL 13.88 m (45 ft 6 in)
- Displacement to length ratio about 156
- Sail area to displacement ratio about 23
- Gennaker area 216.7 square meters
Twin helms, a long cockpit and a hydraulic transom
On deck the Swan 48 follows modern Nautor practice, with twin helm stations, a long cockpit split between a guest area forward and the helms and winches aft, and a hydraulic transom door that drops to form a swim platform. Sail controls are set up so the helmsman can trim the main, and the jib, rather than an overlapping genoa, keeps tacks easy for a short-handed crew.
Off the wind the boat sets a gennaker of more than 2,300 square feet from its bowsprit. Owners who race in Swan events fit a racing sail wardrobe and often add crew, while cruising couples rely on furling headsails and powered winches. Either way, the long waterline and modest displacement give the boat the speed to make passages short.
Three cabins finished by Misa Poggi
Inside, Italian designer Misa Poggi created a three-cabin layout with the owner's cabin forward, a VIP cabin to starboard aft and a guest cabin to port. The owner's cabin has its own private head, and there is a second head for the aft cabins. The saloon combines a dining area and lounge, and the open-plan arrangement keeps the galley connected to the rest of the boat.
Finish is classic Nautor with a contemporary feel: light woods, good ventilation and the kind of fit you expect from a Pietarsaari yard. The MkII added Corian surfaces and upgraded furnishings. Tankage of 360 liters of fuel and 500 liters of water is reasonable for Mediterranean or Caribbean cruising, and most owners add a watermaker.
What the 2023 MkII changed
Nautor introduced the Swan 48 MkII in 2023. The changes are evolutionary rather than revolutionary: a new bowsprit design, a revised chainplate position, upgraded interior surfaces including Corian, and an improved hydraulic transom door. The hull, keel and rig proportions remain the same.
For a used buyer, the practical difference is modest. A well-kept 2019 to 2022 boat offers almost all of the MkII's sailing qualities at a lower price, and any MkI owner can retrofit some of the deck improvements. For new buyers, the MkII is the only choice, so ask the dealer early about delivery slots.
The 1971 S&S Swan 48 and its Bermuda Race wins
The original Swan 48 was a Sparkman and Stephens design built from 1971 to 1975, with 46 hulls completed. It measures 47 feet 11 inches overall with a 37 foot 3 inch waterline, a 13 foot 8 inch beam, an 8-foot draft and around 36,000 pounds of displacement. Most are sloops and some yawls, with a fin keel and a skeg-hung rudder. In the US some were sold as the Palmer Johnson PJ48.
Its racing record is strong. Noryema VIII won the 1972 Newport Bermuda Race, the first non-US yacht to do so, and Constellation won it again in 1992. Today these boats sell for a fraction of the modern model's price, but like any 50-year-old yacht their value depends heavily on deck, rig, engine and tank condition.
The 1990s Frers Swan 48, the value middle ground
Between the classic and the current boat sits a Frers-designed Swan 48 built from 1995 to 2003. It is a more traditional Nautor of its time, with an aft cockpit, a high-quality joinery interior and a hull aimed at fast offshore cruising, and many examples carry teak decks. Recent listings in Europe, the US and Australia have asked roughly $200,000 to $550,000.
These boats are often the smartest Swan 48 purchase for a buyer who wants Nautor quality and ocean capability without a seven-figure budget. Pay close attention to teak deck condition, rig age and the engine. A refit by a Swan-experienced yard is the strongest selling point.
Running a modern Swan 48
Budget roughly $50,000 to $110,000 per year for a modern Swan 48, depending on slip location, insurance, racing program and whether you employ a part-time captain. Sails are a major item, and Swan-class racing adds travel and crew costs. The Volvo D2-75 saildrive is simple to maintain, but seal replacement and corrosion protection must stay on schedule.
Values for the current model have held well. Boats from 2019 to 2022 still ask close to their original prices in euros, helped by steady demand for new hulls. Older 48s depreciate in the usual way for their age, but a well-kept classic Swan tends to find a buyer at a fair price.

Figures come from builder documentation and independent tests where available. Displacement is usually quoted light, so a loaded cruising boat will weigh more. Compare these specs with another model.
How much does a Swan 48 cost?
The price range is wide because three different boats share the name. S&S Swan 48s from the early 1970s and Frers Swan 48s from 1995 to 2003 typically ask between about $150,000 and $550,000. The current Frers Swan 48 is a different market, with 2019 to 2022 hulls listed at around 1.2 to 1.4 million euros or pounds, roughly $1.4 to $1.7 million. MkII boats and fully optioned new builds sit above that.

Compare side by sideOur verdict on the Swan 48
The current Swan 48 is the yacht that brought Nautor's design language down to a size a couple can run on their own, and it does so without diluting what makes a Swan special. It is fast, beautifully finished and holds its value. The price of entry is high, and buyers on a tighter budget should look carefully at the 1990s Frers boat or the classic S&S 48 instead. Whichever generation you choose, buy on documentation and condition, and make sure you know exactly which Swan 48 you are looking at before you make an offer.
