A Finnish yard that married racing hulls and fine joinery

Pekka Koskenkylä founded Oy Nautor Ab in 1966 in Jakobstad, on Finland's west coast, with a simple idea: combine a modern racing hull with a beautifully finished interior in a fiberglass production yacht. Sparkman and Stephens designed the first generations, responsible for the first 775 yachts, and the results were immediate. A Swan 48, Noryema, won the 1972 Bermuda Race as the first production yacht to do so, and the ketch-rigged Swan 65 Sayula II won the first Whitbread Round the World Race in 1973 to 1974.

Ron Holland took over design in the late 1970s, and Germán Frers has been the principal designer since the 1980s. Since 1998 Italian businessman Leonardo Ferragamo and a group of investors have controlled the company. More than 2,000 Swans have been built, from 36 to over 130 feet.

The classic Swan 65 and the modern Swan 48

We cover two Swans that show the brand's range. The Swan 65 is the 1972 Sparkman and Stephens classic, of which 41 were built. These are blue-water legends, offered as sloops or ketches, and the best examples have been refitted to a standard that commands seven-figure prices.

The Swan 48 name has been used three times, on the 1971 Sparkman and Stephens boat, a 1995 Frers design built until 2003, and the current Frers model. That modern Swan 48, built from 2019 and updated as the MkII in 2023, is a fast, high-quality cruiser racer with a modern hull and a luxurious interior. Current lines include the Swan range from 48 to 78 feet, Swan Maxi models from 88 to 128 feet, ClubSwan racing yachts from 28 to 50 feet, and the Swan Shadow and Arrow powerboats.

Resale, support and surveying a Swan

Swan resale is strong across eras, helped by an active owners' club, regattas such as the Rolex Swan Cup and the Swan American Regatta in Newport, and the yard's practice of keeping a wood sample from every yacht so joinery can be matched decades later. Nautor's global service network includes Mediterranean hubs and service points worldwide, and many US yards are experienced with Swans.

On older Swans, the survey should be thorough.

  • Teak decks and the deck core beneath
  • Keel bolts, keel floors and the hull to keel joint
  • Chainplates and their bonding to the hull
  • Rudder bearings and stock condition
  • Rig, sails and hydraulics, especially on larger Swans
  • Osmosis and hull laminate on 1970s and 1980s boats
