Axopar 28 Cabin
Luxury Dayboats & Classics, 29 ft
Used $85K to $175K
A dayboat is built for the best hours of boating: a run to a beach, lunch at anchor, a swim and a fast trip home before sunset. Without the need to sleep six or cross an ocean, designers can focus on style, deck space, handling and the pure pleasure of driving. The result is some of the most beautiful and desirable boats on the water.

This category brings together modern European design-led dayboats such as the Wajer 55, VanDutch 40, Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin, Axopar 28 Cabin and Fjord 40 Cruiser, a supercar-inspired flagship in the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63, and classics that defined boating style, including the Riva Aquarama, Chris-Craft Launch 27 and Boston Whaler's 13 Sport and 170 Montauk.
Here is how these boats differ from bowriders and cruisers, what classic ownership involves and what to expect to pay.

Dayboats prioritize open deck space, comfortable seating, sun pads and easy swimming access over cabins and galleys. Many have a small cabin or console head for changing and occasional naps, but the focus is on daytime use. That makes them easier to handle, often trailerable or suitable for dry stack, and simpler to maintain than cruisers of the same length.
For many owners, a dayboat is a second boat, used near a vacation home or as a tender to a larger yacht. For others, it is the only boat they need because most of their time on the water happens between breakfast and dinner.
In the US, dayboats thrive in places where the boating is short-range and social: Miami's sandbars, Lake Tahoe and the Michigan lakes, Long Island's harbors and the Florida Keys. Classic runabouts have their own scene on lakes such as Lake Geneva in Wisconsin and Lake George in New York, where wooden boat shows draw crowds every summer.
Northern European builders have redefined the dayboat over the last two decades. Dutch brands Wajer and VanDutch combine minimalist lines with high-quality finishes and strong performance. Finnish-designed Axopar boats use sharp, efficient hulls and versatile layouts at accessible prices. Fjord, part of the Hanse group, builds sporty dayboats with distinctive styling, and its 40 Cruiser (2009 to 2012) is now a brokerage-only boat.
At the extreme end, the Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 translates supercar design into a high-speed dayboat. Built in a limited series that references Lamborghini's founding year of 1963, it is aimed at collectors who want a statement more than a practical cruiser.
| Model | Origin | Style | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tecnomar for Lamborghini 63 | Italy | Supercar-inspired performance dayboat | Collector statement, Mediterranean or Miami |
| Wajer 55 | Netherlands | Elegant, fast dayboat with a cabin | Day trips and weekends in style |
| VanDutch 40 | Dutch brand, built in Italy since 2021 | Minimalist, low-profile open boat | Beach clubs and harbor cruising |
| Axopar 37 XC Cross Cabin | Finland (built in Poland) | Versatile cabin dayboat with outboards | All-weather day trips and weekends |
| Axopar 28 Cabin | Finland (built in Poland) | Compact cabin boat | Coastal and lake use, tender |
| Fjord 40 Cruiser | Germany | Sporty dayboat with cuddy | Fast day trips and occasional nights |
| Riva Aquarama | Italy | Mahogany classic runabout | Collector use, lake and harbor cruising |
| Chris-Craft Launch 27 | USA | Modern classic bowrider | Family dayboat with timeless style |
| Boston Whaler 13 Sport, 170 Montauk | USA | Unsinkable small boat | Tender, fishing, family fun |
The terms overlap. A bowrider is a runabout with seating in the bow, usually under 30 feet, popular on lakes and bays. A dayboat is typically larger and more upscale, often with a cabin or head, and focused on design and comfort. A speed boat or performance boat emphasizes top speed and handling.
Many modern boats blend these categories. The Chris-Craft Launch 27, for example, is a classic bowrider with upscale finish, while the Axopar 37 XC, built from 2016 to 2025, blends a dayboat layout with a protected cabin.
The Riva Aquarama, designed by Carlo Riva and built from 1962 to 1996, is perhaps the most famous runabout ever made. About 768 boats were built across the Aquarama, Super Aquarama, Aquarama Special and Aquarama Lungo versions. Their varnished mahogany hulls, twin engines and elegant lines attracted celebrities and appeared in films.
Owning an Aquarama is a commitment. Wooden hulls require skilled care, varnish needs regular attention, and restoration should be done by specialists. Well restored examples are valuable collectibles.
Chris-Craft, one of the oldest names in American boating, built thousands of wooden runabouts and cruisers before moving to fiberglass. Today's Chris-Craft Launch models, like the Launch 27, reinterpret those classic lines with modern construction and outboard or sterndrive power.
The Boston Whaler 13, designed with C. Raymond Hunt's input, introduced unsinkable foam-filled construction and a stable hull that made it a favorite tender and family boat. The 170 Montauk continues that legacy as a versatile small center console.
Many dayboats serve as tenders to larger yachts or as chase boats for superyacht owners. Compact, fast and stylish models like the Axopar 28 and VanDutch 40 are popular for this role. Check dimensions and weight carefully if the boat will be carried aboard or towed behind a larger yacht.
A chase boat usually travels on its own bottom alongside the mother yacht, so range and seakeeping matter more than weight. A tender lifted onto a swim platform or into a garage has strict limits on length, beam and weight, and the crane or hydraulic platform rating sets the ceiling. Outboard-powered dayboats are easier to service on remote cruising grounds, which is one reason Axopar models are common in this role.
Modern dayboats from well known European builders tend to hold value well, especially limited-production models. Check engine hours, service records and hull condition. For classics, condition, originality and restoration quality are everything. Original engines, documentation and provenance can significantly affect value.
Small Boston Whalers are among the most liquid boats in America. A tidy 13 or Montauk sells quickly, and restored older Whalers have a strong following. Check for water-logged foam, which shows up as a boat that sits low or weighs far more than it should, and look at transom and hardware mounting points for cracks.
| Size | New | Used |
|---|---|---|
| Under 20 ft (Whaler 13, 170 Montauk) | $35,000 to $75,000 | $5,000 to $55,000 |
| 25 to 30 ft | $200,000 to $450,000 | $80,000 to $380,000 |
| 35 to 45 ft | $600,000 to $1,700,000 | $250,000 to $1,300,000 |
| 50 to 63 ft performance dayboats | $2,500,000 to $5,000,000+ | $1,500,000 to $4,000,000 |
| Classic Riva Aquarama | Not in production | Several hundred thousand dollars to over $1,000,000 |
Typical US asking and sail-away ranges in 2026. Condition, engines and equipment move individual boats well outside these bands.
A dayboat is designed for daytime use, with open deck space, seating and swimming access rather than full cruising accommodation.
New 35 to 45 foot luxury dayboats typically cost about $600,000 to $1.7 million in 2026. Smaller dayboats start in the low hundreds of thousands.
A bowrider is a runabout with bow seating, usually under 30 feet. Dayboats are often larger and more upscale, focusing on design and comfort.
About 768 Aquaramas were built from 1962 to 1996 across several versions.
Its foam-filled hull keeps it afloat even when swamped, which helped make it a famous tender and family boat.
