The X-79 beginning

Brothers Lars and Niels Jeppesen founded X-Yachts with Birger Hansen in 1979 in Haderslev, southern Denmark. Their first boat, the X-79, took its name from its 7.96 meter length and its launch year, and around 468 were built through 1994. It established X-Yachts as a builder of fast, well-built boats that won races and still felt like proper yachts.

Since 2012, Ib Kunoe's Consolidated Holdings has been the majority owner. X-Yachts builds roughly 150 boats a year and has produced more than 6,000 since its founding.

The steel grid and the X4.3

The signature X-Yachts engineering feature is a galvanized steel frame bonded into the hull that takes the loads from the keel and the mast. That grid distributes stress over a large area, making the boats stiff and durable while allowing a lighter hull. It is a big part of why older X-Yachts remain sound after decades of racing.

The range is split into the Pure X line of performance cruisers, the XCruising line focused on comfort and the XRacing line, including the XR 41. The X-Yachts X4.3, which we cover in depth, belongs to the Pure X family, a 43-foot class boat that balances real racing ability with a comfortable interior. It was introduced in its first version in 2016, originally sold as the X4, and re-engineered in 2021 as the MkII with new tooling, hull and rudder.

X-Yachts interiors are finished in light woods and Scandinavian simplicity, and the boats are built with an eye toward long service lives.

X-Yachts in the US

X-Yachts are less common in the US than in Europe, which keeps used supply thin and values relatively firm. Dealers on the East and West coasts handle sales and service, and the boats appeal to sailors who want a racer cruiser with European engineering.

  • Inspect the steel grid for rust or corrosion, especially on older boats.
  • Check keel bolts and the keel-to-hull joint, especially after groundings.
  • Review sails and running rigging, which may be race-worn.
  • Inspect deck hardware and chainplate areas for leaks.
