Elan Yachts models

Elan has built sailboats in Begunje, Slovenia, since 1949. We cover 12 models from the Elan 40 and Impression 434 to the E4, E6, GT5 and GT6, all now closed fleets after Elan stopped its old ranges in 2025.

Known for
  • Rob Humphreys designs from the mid-1990s to 2025
  • Impression deck-saloon cruisers for owners and charter
  • Chined, twin-rudder E line performance cruisers
  • Styling work with Pininfarina and Studio F.A. Porsche
  • Early use of vacuum infusion in series production

Skis, sails and a factory in Begunje

Elan grew out of a wartime workshop that made skis for Yugoslav Partisans, and the company dates itself to 1945 in Begunje, northwest Slovenia. Its yacht division claims an unbroken line of boats since 1949. Americans know the name mostly from skiing, and that composite know-how carried straight into hulls.

From the mid-1990s, starting with the Elan 295, Rob Humphreys' studio was the principal designer, giving the boats a consistent cruiser-racer character. In 2003 the yard switched to vacuum-assisted infusion, which it calls VAIL, earlier than most volume builders.

In November 2025 Elan announced a clean break. After pausing production to rethink the business, it dropped the Impression, E and GT lines, kept the molds, and launched a 65 to 80-foot carbon range drawn by J&J Design with Guillaume Verdier, the SixtyFive first, due in early 2027. That ended the Humphreys era and made every boat on this page a closed fleet.

Four families, from club racers to Grand Tourers

Humphreys' early cruiser-racers came first. The Elan 45, built from 2000 until about 2007, and the Elan 40 of 2001 are fin-keeled boats that still go well around the buoys and now cost less than many new 30-footers.

The Impression line, launched in 2004, is the volume story. The Elan Impression 434 sold more than 350 hulls before being rebadged the 444. The Elan Impression 45 of 2014 and the Elan Impression 45.1 of 2019 kept the same basic hull, the later one adding a vertical transom, while the twin-rudder Elan Impression 50 headed the range from 2014 and the Elan Impression 40.1 refreshed the 40-footer around 2020. Many have worked in charter fleets.

The E line is Elan's sporty side. The Elan 350 of 2010 brought a chined, twin-rudder hull that planes under spinnaker and evolved into the Elan E4, SAIL's Best Boat winner for 2017. The Elan E6 of 2022 scaled the concept to 50 feet with Gurit engineering and Pininfarina styling.

The GT line put deckhouse comfort on those fast hulls. The Elan GT5 appeared at Paris in late 2016 and won a Cruising World award, and the Elan GT6, styled by the Porsche design studio, followed in 2020 with an offshore Explorer version in 2024.

Buying an Elan after the factory moved on

Elan never had the US dealer depth of Beneteau or Jeanneau. Exports began around 2004, a Michigan importer took over in 2013, and a 2016 push ran through Springline in Mystic, Connecticut. Elan's list now names Massey Yacht Sales at Springline, in Palmetto, Florida, and Mystic. Many of the best boats are in Croatia, so budget for shipping or a delivery.

No new boats will undercut used prices, but factory support will thin. Spars, deck gear, steering and engines come from mainstream suppliers, so any good yard can keep an Elan sailing.

  • Pin down the exact model: the 350, 360 and E4 share a hull, the 434 became the 444, and the Impression 45 and E6 names were each reused.
  • On ex-charter Impressions, budget for sails and canvas, and check the saildrive seal and leg.
  • Inspect iron keels, keel bolts and the floors around the keel for grounding damage.
  • On twin-rudder boats, check both rudder bearings and the steering linkage.
  • Note the keel option, since many US boats carry shoal keels that point lower.
  • With Oceanvolt electric drive, test battery capacity and charging.
