From a hardware store owner's outboard dinghies to a global brand

Henri Jeanneau owned a hardware store in Les Herbiers in the Vendée when he built his first wooden outboard boats in 1957. He moved quickly to fiberglass, and by 1960 his motorboats were molded from the new material, with sailboats following in 1964. American conglomerate Bangor Punta bought the company in 1970, and after a series of owners Jeanneau joined Groupe Beneteau in 1995, the same year that brought its multihull division, which had become Lagoon, into the group.

Jeanneau now claims more than 250,000 boats on the water worldwide. The range covers Sun Odyssey cruisers, the larger Jeanneau Yachts line, Sun Fast performance boats, and powerboats from Merry Fisher and Cap Camarat to NC, DB and the TH power catamarans. The four models we cover reach across three of those families.

Sun Odyssey 410 and 440, the walk-around deck generation

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 440, designed by Philippe Briand and launched in 2017, introduced sloping walk-around side decks that let crew step from cockpit to bow without climbing over coamings, and it was named European Yacht of the Year for 2018. The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410, drawn by Marc Lombard and built from 2018 to 2025, brought the same idea to a smaller size with a sporty hull and a lifting keel option.

Both have been popular with private owners and charter fleets, so many used examples are on the market. Both have also been replaced, the 440 by the Sun Odyssey 455 and the 410 by the Sun Odyssey 415 on the same Lombard hull, while the newer 385 continues the design language in a smaller size. Owners of 2020 to 2022 boats should confirm that the bow thruster recall work has been done.

The Jeanneau 54, the flagship cruiser for couples

Above the Sun Odyssey range sits the Jeanneau Yachts line, built for owners who want more volume and finish. The Jeanneau 54, launched in 2015 and built until about 2022, paired another Briand hull with an interior styled by Andrew Winch, and it offered everything from a two-cabin owner layout to five cabins for charter. A fold-down transom terrace and concealed tender davits made it feel like a much bigger yacht at anchor. Its size slot passed to the Jeanneau Yachts 55 in 2023, so the 54 is now a brokerage purchase, often a well-equipped one.

The NC 895 and Jeanneau's powerboat side

Jeanneau started out building motorboats, and power remains a big part of its business. The Jeanneau NC 895 is a good example of the modern approach: a 29-foot outboard pilothouse cruiser with a starboard helm door, two private cabins and twin outboards, sold in Europe as the Merry Fisher 895. It grew out of the Merry Fisher 855 of 2012, and by 2024 the two models together had sold close to 2,000 boats. The Series 2 version shown at Miami in 2024 has a new hull, deck and interior.

For American buyers, the NC 895 competes with US-built pocket cruisers such as Cutwater and Ranger Tugs, offering a European layout and outboard simplicity rather than an inboard diesel.

Liquidity, dealers and what to check on a used Jeanneau

Jeanneau is one of the most liquid brands in the US, with dealers across the coasts and the Great Lakes and Groupe Beneteau's US operations behind them. Resale is close to Beneteau, which means steady rather than spectacular, and buyers have plenty of choice at every price point. Charter-exit boats are common and can be good value if their maintenance history is documented.

Production boats age in predictable ways, so check these points.

  • Keel grid and liner bonding, especially after any grounding
  • Rudder bearings and steering play on twin-wheel boats
  • Saildrive diaphragm age or shaft seal condition, plus engine hours
  • Deck hardware fastenings and core around stanchions
  • Window and hatch seals, particularly on hull portlights
  • Outboard hours, transom and helm door seals on NC and Merry Fisher boats
  • Interior veneer damage near leaks, and charter wear in heads and galleys

Frequently asked questions

Is Jeanneau owned by Beneteau?

Yes. Jeanneau has been part of Groupe Beneteau since 1995, but it keeps its own designs, factories and brand identity.

Where are Jeanneau boats built?

Jeanneau boats are built mainly in the Vendée region of France, around Les Herbiers, with some production elsewhere in the group.

Is Jeanneau better than Beneteau?

They are comparable in quality and price. Choice usually comes down to layout, deck design and the specific model.

Does Jeanneau make powerboats?

Yes. Jeanneau builds Merry Fisher, Cap Camarat, NC and DB powerboats as well as power catamarans. The NC 895 is its outboard pilothouse cruiser, called the Merry Fisher 895 in Europe.

Do Jeanneau boats hold their value?

They hold value steadily, similar to Beneteau, and are easy to sell thanks to a large US dealer network.
