Marc Lombard's take on the walk-around idea

When Jeanneau introduced the Sun Odyssey 410 at the 2018 Annapolis boat show, it borrowed the sloping walk-around side decks from the bigger Sun Odyssey 440 but handed the hull to a different designer. Marc Lombard, whose studio has a long record in offshore racing and cruising designs, drew a hull with a wave-piercing bow that rakes aft from the waterline and a hard chine running nearly the full length of the boat.

The reverse bow is not just styling. It puts the maximum waterline length forward, which helps speed and pitching, while the chine adds form stability and volume above the waterline. Twin rudders keep grip as the boat heels. The result won Cruising World's 2019 Boat of the Year award for Best Midsize Cruiser, and it became one of the most common new 40-footers in US marinas over the next six years.

The 410 was replaced in late 2025 by the Sun Odyssey 415, which keeps the same Lombard hull with a few added inches of beam aft and a reworked interior. Cruising World put 410 production at some 800 boats. That makes the 410 a good used buy: you get the hull that Jeanneau still builds, at a substantial discount to a new 415, which Blue Water Sailing reported at an introductory price of about $250,000 and Cruising World's 2026 test listed at a $350,000 base.

Fin, shoal or lifting keel

The jeanneau sun odyssey 410 is unusual in offering three keel types. The standard cast iron fin draws 7 ft and gives the best upwind performance. The shoal fin at 5 ft 2 in carries more ballast to compensate, and the lifting keel varies from 4 ft 6 in retracted to 9 ft 8 in extended.

The lifting keel is the version to look for if you cruise the Bahamas, Florida Bay, the Chesapeake's shallow rivers or the Intracoastal Waterway. Retracted, it reaches anchorages that a fixed fin boat cannot, and extended it points better than the standard fin. The trade-off is maintenance: the lifting mechanism, pivot and hydraulic or mechanical system need regular inspection, and a seized or damaged keel is an expensive repair.

  • Fin keel: 7 ft draft, 17,161 lb displacement, 4,416 lb ballast
  • Shoal keel: 5 ft 2 in draft, 17,873 lb, 5,128 lb ballast
  • Lifting keel: 4 ft 6 in to 9 ft 8 in, 16,729 lb, 3,984 lb ballast

Six ways to arrange the interior

Jeanneau gave buyers an unusual number of choices. In the aft part of the boat, you could choose twin aft cabins or one aft cabin plus a large systems and storage room. In the forward cabin, you could choose a Pullman-style double berth or an island double, and with the Pullman layout an en suite head forward became an option. SAIL counted six total configuration combinations.

For a couple, the one aft cabin version with the big storage room is the most practical: it gives a real place for sails, fenders, a folding bike and spares, which most 41-footers lack. For families, twin aft cabins and the island forward berth work well. Water tankage of about 140 gallons is generous for the size, which is one reason the 410 suits extended coastal cruising.

Sailing the 410 upwind and down

SAIL tested a standard rig boat in 9 knots of true wind and logged 4 knots at 35 degrees apparent, 4.5 knots at 40 degrees, 5 knots at 45 degrees and 3.7 knots at 120 degrees downwind. The reviewer noted that the boat felt faster than the instruments showed and praised a positive helm feel. Zuzana Prochazka, testing for boats.com in similar 9 knot conditions, saw 5.2 knots at 35 degrees apparent and 5 knots at 65 degrees.

With a sail area to displacement ratio of about 21, a displacement to length ratio of about 135 and a 26 percent ballast ratio, the 410 is a balanced, moderately powered cruiser. The standard rig uses a crosscut main and a 115 percent genoa, and the self-tacking jib option is best paired with a code zero. A Performance version adds laminated sails and an adjustable backstay.

SAIL found a few small faults: the headsail sheet leads only adjust inboard and outboard, there are no handholds on deck forward of the mast, and the turning circle under power is about two boat lengths.

A 40 horsepower shaft drive

Unlike many rivals that use saildrives, the 410 uses a 40 hp Yanmar on a conventional shaft, with a 45 hp option. SAIL measured 6.2 knots at a 2,100 rpm cruise and 7.9 knots at 3,100 rpm wide open, with mild prop walk in reverse. The shaft drive is a real advantage for owners who do their own maintenance or cruise far from dealers, because there is no saildrive diaphragm to replace every seven years.

Fuel tankage of about 52 gallons (195 liters on Jeanneau's spec sheet) is adequate for most coastal hops. For a boat of this size, the 40 hp engine is adequate, and the extra 5 hp of the optional engine is not worth paying a large premium for.

The sinking that triggered a recall

The Sun Odyssey 410 is the model at the center of Jeanneau's bow thruster recall. In March 2023, a 2021-built 410 sank off Schönberg on Germany's Baltic coast. Its owners, the musician Pete Sage of the band Santiano and his wife, were rescued. Investigators of the recovered hull found the retractable Sleipner-Sidepower bow thruster had been installed incorrectly, with a flange of the housing only glued from the outside with sealant rather than laminated to the hull.

Jeanneau started a recall campaign in March 2023 to reinforce the bonding of the thruster modules on the 410, 440 and 490, and in June 2024 the European Commission published a safety alert for boats built between 2020 and 2022, advising owners to stop sailing until the repair was done.

Running costs and the used market after the 415

Budget about $16,000 to $32,000 a year for a 42-foot slip, insurance, haul out and bottom paint, engine service and routine maintenance. A shaft drive engine and a simple rig keep costs low compared with larger cruisers.

US listings for 2020 to 2022 boats typically range from about $265,000 to $375,000, and European boats, many of them ex-charter, generally ask less. With the 415 now in dealers and a fully equipped test boat priced at about $550,000 by Cruising World, late 410s have held their value well. The best buys are privately owned two cabin or lifting keel boats with documented recall work.

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$220K to $410K
Yearly running costs$16K to $32K

Well-equipped boats commonly left dealers well above $300,000. Lifting keel boats and Performance rig boats command a premium on the brokerage market, while two cabin boats are easier to sell than charter-style three cabin, one head versions. Any 2020 to 2022 boat without documented bow thruster recall work should be priced well below the market until the repair is verified.

Our verdict on the Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 410

The Sun Odyssey 410 is one of the most versatile 41-footers built in the last decade. The Lombard hull sails well, the walk-around deck is a genuine safety improvement, the shaft drive keeps maintenance simple and the lifting keel option opens up shallow cruising grounds. The bow thruster recall is serious but fixable, and a boat with documented repair work is a sound purchase. Buy a privately owned boat with the lifting keel or the two cabin layout, and you will have a cruiser that is easy to sail and easy to sell.
