The Dufour 430 is a 13.24 m Felci cruiser launched in 2019 with a 4.30 m beam, 9,700 kg light displacement, a 50 or 60 hp saildrive and a choice of a forward galley or a four-cabin charter plan.

Best for
  • Couples who host guests often
  • Families stepping up from a 38-footer
  • East Coast and Bahamas cruising with the shoal keel
  • Buyers who want a lot of boat for the money

Why buyers still search for the Dufour 430

The dufour 430 sits in a sweet spot for American owners: big enough to take two couples on a Bahamas trip, small enough for one couple to handle, and recent enough to come with modern electronics and a hinged swim platform. Dufour unveiled it at boot Düsseldorf in January 2019 together with the 390, as the first two boats of a new generation drawn by Felci Yacht Design for the La Rochelle builder.

SAIL described it at launch as the third-largest boat in the Grand Large line. It shared the new family look of the 390 but brought a longer waterline, a 4.30 m (14 ft 1 in) beam and a much bigger sail plan. Dufour kept it in the range alongside the newer Dufour 41 and 44 into 2024, and it no longer appears in the current lineup.

A softer hull with a raised aft chine

Dufour's own description of the hull is more specific than most brochures. Compared with the earlier Grand Large boats, the 430 has softer lines, a higher and rounder aft chine, and a sportier spray rail along the topsides. In plain terms, the chine sits higher at the stern, so less of it drags through the water when the boat is upright in light air, while the volume above it stays.

The hull is 12.50 m (41 ft) long, and the molded bow fitting brings the overall length to 13.24 m (43 ft 5 in). Light displacement is 9,700 kg (21,385 lb), carried on a 2,600 kg cast iron keel that draws 2.10 m, with a 1.75 m shoal version. Dufour stayed with a single spade rudder, which generally makes backing into a slip easier than with the twin rudders many rivals use.

  • Waterline length 11.69 m (38 ft 4 in)
  • Sail area 92 m2 (52 m2 mainsail, 40 m2 genoa)
  • Sail area to displacement about 20.6 (sailboatdata)
  • Displacement to length about 169, ballast ratio about 27 percent

Light air on the Chesapeake

No published test of the 430 offers a full polar, so treat speed claims with care. The most useful American account comes from Cruising World editor Mark Pillsbury, who sailed the boat on Chesapeake Bay in the spring of 2019. With about 6 knots of breeze the 430 made around 3 knots, and it added a couple more when the gusts rose to 8. He sailed it with a self-tending jib on a foredeck track and found it made tacking hard on the wind easy, though he preferred the extra power of a genoa when cracked off on a reach.

A sail area to displacement ratio above 20 is high for a production cruiser of this size, so the boat should keep moving in moderate air where many 43-footers motor. Like other wide-sterned designs, it will want to be sailed fairly flat. If you plan long reaches, a code zero or gennaker flown from the bow fitting is the best upgrade, a point Pillsbury made for both new Dufours.

Galley forward or four cabins

The 430's interior is its most distinctive feature. The layout Cruising World inspected puts the galley forward of the saloon, with cooking space on both sides of the centerline, a dining area to starboard and a pair of seats opposite. Aft there are two double cabins and a large head at the foot of the companionway to port, and the owner's cabin forward has its own head. The 2020 factory sheet lists this as the three-cabin, two-head, eight-berth plan.

The alternative is a four-cabin, ten-berth version with a linear galley to port and a dining table to starboard, which gains a bunk cabin opposite the aft head. That is the charter configuration, useful for a big family but less pleasant for a couple. The galley-forward boat is the one most private buyers want, because the saloon becomes a lounge rather than a corridor and the cook is out of the traffic.

  • Three ports in each side of the hull light the cabins and saloon
  • A large overhead hatch near the mast spans most of the coachroof width
  • Fuel 250 L (66 gal), fresh water 430 L (114 gal)

Twin helms, split backstay and the outdoor galley

On deck the 430 has twin helms and a split backstay, which leaves an open path to the drop-down swim platform. The cockpit table has drop-down leaves, and the transom seats hide an outdoor galley with a grill and sink, the same idea Dufour used on the 360, 390 and 412. Dufour's guide stresses easy movement on deck and high-end standard equipment.

SAIL noted the deck-stepped, double-spreader aluminum mast and fractional rig. Check the bow fitting and anchor roller on any boat that has spent years anchoring in coral sand, and look at the split backstay chainplates at the quarters.

Fifty or sixty horsepower, and how the hull is built

Standard power is a 50 hp diesel with saildrive, with a 60 hp option, and Dufour also offered a Smart Electric pack. Published motoring numbers for the 430 are scarce, so ask the seller for the propeller type and a recent sea trial log. The extra 10 hp is worth having on a boat this heavy if you motor into short chop or cross the Gulf Stream.

The hull is hand-laminated polyester with an NPG gelcoat layer to resist blistering, and the deck is an injected sandwich with a PU foam core. Dufour's own used-boat guide recommends an osmosis survey, especially on early 2019 hulls, which is an unusually frank piece of advice from a builder.

The 430 against its successor

When SAIL reviewed the Dufour 41 in 2023, it noted that the new boat moved its companionway forward to match the 430's cockpit length and shares its 14 ft beam. In other words, the 41 packs similar outdoor space into a shorter hull. The 41 has the newer double-chine styling and the Adventure, Ocean and Performance packages, while the 430 offers a longer waterline, a larger standard sail plan and lower used prices.

For a buyer, that makes the 430 the value play: a bigger boat for the money, with the last of the classic Grand Large proportions.

Buying a used 430 in 2026

Expect to pay roughly $250,000 to $380,000 in the US for boats built from 2019 to 2023. Many 430s went into charter in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean, so four-cabin boats with high engine hours are plentiful. The best buys are privately owned galley-forward boats with the 60 hp engine, a genoa and a tidy inventory.

Dufour's used guide points to the rig and sails, the furler and winches, engine hours, keel type and the lithium bank on electric boats. Add the steering cables, the hinged platform and the outdoor galley's gas system to that list.

How much does a Dufour 430 Grand Large cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$250K to $380K
Yearly running costs$16K to $32K

The 430 that Cruising World sailed in 2019 carried a price of $425,000 as equipped. Today the galley-forward three-cabin boats with the 60 hp engine and a full sail inventory command the top of the range, while four-cabin ex-charter boats trade well below. The shoal keel is an asset for buyers on the US East Coast and in the Bahamas.

Our verdict on the Dufour 430 Grand Large

The Dufour 430 is the most interesting of the late Grand Large boats because of what is inside it. A galley-forward plan turns the saloon into a real living room, the sail plan is generous, and the single rudder keeps docking simple. The catch is thin independent test data and a market full of four-cabin charter boats. Find a privately owned three-cabin boat with the bigger engine and a genoa, have the hull surveyed properly, and you have a capable 43-footer for noticeably less than its successors.
