The Oceanis 34.1 is Beneteau's current 35-foot family cruiser, drawn by Marc Lombard with a Nauta interior, built in Poland since 2021. Three keels, three sail packages and two or three cabins make the spec sheet matter.

Best for
  • Couples stepping down from a 40-footer
  • First-time owners who want a new boat under 36 feet
  • Shallow-water cruising with the lifting keel
  • Daysailing and weekending with occasional guests

The Oceanis 34.1 is the small boat Beneteau did not have to build

Builders chase margin, and margin lives in bigger boats. That is why the Oceanis 34.1 deserves attention: it is an all-new hull in a size class most yards have abandoned to the brokerage market. It replaced the Oceanis 35.1 in the lineup, launched in 2021 and made its North American debut at the Miami International Boat Show in February 2022, where both SAIL and Cruising World sailed it.

The design team is the one behind the current seventh generation Oceanis range. Marc Lombard drew the hull and Nauta Design did the interior and styling. Unlike the French-built 35.1, the 34.1 comes out of Beneteau's yard in Poland, as does the smaller Oceanis 30.1. Cruising World's judges, who made it a finalist in the 2023 Boat of the Year Best Midsize Cruiser class (the Tartan 365 took the win), called the build quality very impressive.

If you searched for the Beneteau 34.1, this is the boat. It shares nothing structural with the older Oceanis 34 of 2008 or the 35.1 it succeeded, so treat those as separate purchases.

Lighter, narrower and chined: what Lombard changed

Beneteau's own spec sheet tells the story. Compared with the 35.1, the 34.1 is roughly 1,000 pounds lighter and carries about 3 inches less beam on each side, according to Beneteau sales manager Eric Levine in SAIL's test. At the same time Lombard widened the forward third of the boat and ran a hard chine from stem to stern, so the owner's cabin up front gained volume even as the hull lost width at the waterline.

The narrower waterline and smaller wetted area are aimed squarely at light air, which is where most coastal cruisers spend their summers. The chine supplies form stability once the boat heels, and twin rudders keep grip when it does. The numbers back up the intent: a displacement to length ratio of about 177 and a sail area to displacement ratio of about 16 with the standard self-tacking jib, rising sharply with the optional genoa or square-top main. Beneteau quotes up to 29 percent more sail area than the 35.1 depending on specification.

Lightship displacement is 12,046 pounds and the standard deep keel carries 3,482 pounds of cast iron, a ballast ratio near 29 percent. Like most beamy modern cruisers it leans on hull shape for stiffness, so reef a little earlier than you would on a heavier older boat.

Three keels and an ICW-friendly mast

Draft is the first decision on a 34.1, new or used. The standard deep fin draws 6 ft 7 in. The shoal keel, which the Miami launch boat carried, draws 4 ft 11 in and carries more ballast to compensate. The third choice is a hydraulic lifting keel that draws 4 ft 1 in raised and 8 ft 4 in down.

For Chesapeake, Florida and Bahamas sailors the lifter is the interesting one, because it gives better upwind performance than the shoal fin and still lets you creep into thin anchorages. It adds hydraulics to maintain, so ask for service records on a used boat.

Both the conventional and in-mast furling spars give an air draft of 51 ft 1 in, which clears the 65-foot fixed bridges on the Intracoastal Waterway with room to spare. The rig has no backstay, which keeps the transom clear for boarding.

  • Deep fin: 6 ft 7 in, about 3,482 lb ballast, the best all-round choice
  • Shoal fin: 4 ft 11 in, about 4,099 lb ballast, common on US East Coast boats
  • Hydraulic lifting keel: 4 ft 1 in to 8 ft 4 in, about 3,319 lb ballast

Reading the option sheet: Easy Sail, Comfort, Family and the sail packs

Beneteau sells the 34.1 in pre-built packages, so two boats of the same model year can feel completely different. Easy Sail is the base spec with the self-tacking jib, a classic hoisted main and a single coachroof winch. Comfort and Family add domestic gear, and electronics come as Coastal or Offshore packs.

The sail packages matter most. The top Upwind/Downwind level adds a composite bowsprit for a code zero or asymmetric spinnaker, a second electric coachroof winch for the main halyard, extra winches at the helms and more jammers. SAIL's Zuzana Prochazka called the bowsprit an absolute must for light air. A 106 percent furling genoa replaces the self-tacker on performance-minded boats, and a square-top main adds roughly another 40 square feet.

Cruising World's Mark Pillsbury liked the friction rings used in place of genoa cars because they make headsail shape easy to adjust, but wished the mainsheet were led aft as well.

Two cabins with a workshop, or three with a wet head

Below decks the boat is bright for its size, with four deck hatches, four hull portlights and long coachroof windows. The port settee doubles as the seat for an aft-facing fold-up nav desk; fold the desk away and a cushion turns it into a full-length bunk.

The L-shaped galley sits to starboard at the foot of the companionway with a two-burner Eno stove and oven, a top-loading fridge and twin trash bins. A microwave with a 2,000-watt inverter is optional. The owner's cabin is forward behind a split door designed to let the berth run as far aft as possible.

The real choice is aft. The two-cabin version has a double cabin to starboard and, to port, a large head with a separate stall shower and a door into a big stowage and workshop area under the cockpit, also reachable through a cockpit locker. The three-cabin version gives that space to a second aft cabin and shrinks the head into a wet head. Taller sailors may prefer the starboard aft cabin to the forward one, since it has a bigger bed and more standing room, and it moves less in a seaway.

What the Miami sea trials recorded

Two magazines sailed the 34.1 off Miami in very different breezes, which gives a fair picture of the boat. Cruising World had about 10 knots of wind with a shoal-keel boat and saw just under 6 knots upwind and 7.8 knots on a beam reach. Pillsbury compared the handling to a sports car on a mountain road and praised the feedback from the twin rudders and the forward visibility from both wheels.

SAIL sailed hull number three in 15 to 20 knots true with stronger gusts. With a full main and a partly rolled genoa the boat made 8.0 knots at 60 degrees apparent, peaked at 8.3 knots on a beam reach and ran at 7.2 knots at 135 degrees apparent, staying on its feet without a reef.

Under power, SAIL's boat had the optional 30 hp Yanmar and reached 8.1 knots at 2,750 rpm in flat water, with a sensible cruise of about 7.5 knots at 2,300 rpm. The standard 21 hp engine will be adequate in calm water, but the bigger engine is worth seeking if you motor into Chesapeake chop or Gulf Stream seas.

Tanks, engines and the Seanapps question

Beneteau lists 34 gallons of diesel and 61 gallons of fresh water. That is plenty for weekends and coastal cruising, a little thin for a couple heading to the Bahamas for a season, where a watermaker or extra jerry cans become part of the plan. The engine is a saildrive in both power options, with controls low on the starboard side of the cockpit.

Many US boats were ordered with air conditioning, and the Miami show boat had double 30-amp shore power inlets to feed it. A Side Power bow thruster is optional and useful for anyone new to twin rudders. Boats of this generation also carry Beneteau's Seanapps unit for checking batteries, tanks and maintenance logs from a phone; confirm whether the subscription transfers with a used boat.

Buying new against buying a 2022 or 2023 boat

Because the 34.1 is still in production, the used market is thin and mostly made up of 2022 to 2024 boats sold by owners trading up or by charter programs. Expect asking prices between roughly $195,000 and $300,000 in 2026, with the lifting keel, the upwind/downwind package, air conditioning and a bow thruster accounting for most of the spread.

A nearly new boat skips the wait for a build slot, and early owners have usually sorted commissioning snags. Buying new, however, lets you choose the keel and sail package, the two things that most change how a 34.1 sails and resells.

Annual running costs for a 35-footer of this type in a US marina typically land between $9,000 and $18,000 before depreciation, driven mostly by slip fees, insurance and haul-outs. Saildrive diaphragm replacement on Beneteau's recommended schedule is a cost worth budgeting.

New, typical sail-away$240K to $340K
Used, typical asking$195K to $300K
Yearly running costs$9K to $18K

SAIL and Cruising World both quoted a $192,000 base price at launch in 2022, and Cruising World put a well-optioned Miami show boat with the 30 hp engine, genoa and upwind/downwind package at $295,000 sail-away. Industry price rises since then push a typical 2026 US order into the mid $200,000s to mid $300,000s; get a dealer quote. Used values hinge on the keel (the lifting keel carries a premium), the sail package and whether the boat has air conditioning and a bow thruster.

Strengths and weaknesses

What owners like

  • Sails noticeably better in light air than the 35.1 it replaced
  • Twin rudders give precise steering and good grip when heeled
  • Three keel options, including a hydraulic lifting keel
  • Two-cabin layout has a separate shower and a genuine workshop locker
  • 51 ft air draft suits the Intracoastal Waterway
  • Strong US dealer network and resale demand

What to weigh up

  • Base Easy Sail boats are undercanvassed without the sail packs
  • Water tankage of 61 gallons is modest for extended cruising
  • Twin rudders give little steerage at very low speed in marinas
  • Option packages make like-for-like price comparisons difficult
  • Three-cabin version loses the separate shower and big locker

Rivals to consider

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 349

The sister-brand 34-footer of the previous decade, cheaper used and also chined with twin rudders, but older and less refined.

Hanse 348

German alternative with a self-tacking jib as standard and a modern open-plan interior, sold through a smaller US dealer network.

Dehler 34

Sportier performance cruiser from the Hanse group for owners who care more about racing than cabin volume.

Compare side by side

Tartan 365

The American-built boat that beat the 34.1 to Cruising World's 2023 midsize title, larger and considerably more expensive.

Our verdict on the Beneteau Oceanis 34.1

The Oceanis 34.1 is the rare production cruiser that sails better than the boat it replaced while giving up almost nothing in living space. Lombard's chined hull and twin rudders make it lively and forgiving, and the two-cabin layout with its separate shower and workshop locker is one of the smartest uses of space at this size. The catch is the option list: a base Easy Sail boat with a shoal keel is pleasant but ordinary, while a deep or lifting keel boat with the genoa, bowsprit and code zero is genuinely rewarding. Buy the configuration, not just the model year.
