Sorting out the many Bavaria 42s

Few builders have reused a number as often as Bavaria reused 42. Before you compare prices on a Bavaria 42 Cruiser, make sure the listing really is one. The family tree looks like this:

The 42 Cruiser itself, built from 2004 to 2008, is the boat most people searching for a 2006 or 2007 Bavaria 42 actually mean, and it is the subject of this guide. If a broker's listing says Bavaria 42 and the year is 1999 or 2000, it is the earlier aft cockpit boat, a lighter design with a different interior and an older Volvo.

  • Bavaria 42 (1998 to 2001): J&J aft cockpit design, LOD 42 ft 7 in, about 18,500 lb, Volvo MD22L of 50 hp
  • Bavaria 42 Ocean: the center cockpit sister, praised by YACHT in 1998 as rock solid at an extremely competitive price
  • Bavaria 44 (2002 to 2004): an update of the 42, longer and beamier
  • Bavaria 42 Match: a performance model of the mid-2000s
  • Bavaria 42 Cruiser (2004 to 2008): this boat
  • Bavaria 43 Cruiser (2008 to 2010), Vision 42 and C42 (2020 onward): later and different designs

A product of Bavaria's volume years

The 42 Cruiser belongs to the period when Bavaria was the volume king of European boatbuilding. By 2007 the Giebelstadt factory was turning out close to 3,500 boats a year, according to SAIL, and the same year Bain Capital bought the company for a reported 1.3 billion euros. Boats like the 42 Cruiser were the reason: J&J Design drew straightforward, roomy hulls, and Bavaria built them on a moving assembly line at prices the French yards struggled to match.

For a used buyer that history cuts both ways. These boats were engineered to a budget and many spent their first decade in charter, but they were built in a consistent, well-documented way, parts interchange with other J&J Cruisers of the era, and surveyors know exactly where to look.

The layout, cabin by cabin

The factory accommodation drawing published by the North American importer shows the standard three-cabin, two-head plan. Two double cabins sit aft, one either side of the companionway. The aft head is to port at the foot of the steps, handy for crew coming below in wet gear. A long linear galley runs along the port side of the saloon, opposite a U-shaped dinette with a central table to starboard, and the nav station sits aft on the starboard side.

Forward of the saloon bulkhead is the owner's cabin with a V-berth and its own en suite head to starboard. The arrangement is the reason the boat was so popular with charter companies: three couples get a double each and two heads to share. For a couple cruising alone, one aft cabin becomes the sail and gear locker every boat this size needs.

The numbers and what they mean under sail

Sailboatdata records the 42 Cruiser at 42 ft 7 in overall, 37 ft 5 in on the waterline, 13 ft 1 in of beam and a displacement of 20,282 lb with 6,614 lb of ballast, a ratio of about 33 percent. The standard keel draws about 5 ft 11 in, and a deep lead keel of about 6 ft 11 in was offered. That shallow standard draft made the boat popular in the Adriatic and suits the US East Coast, but the deep keel noticeably improves windward ability and resale.

Published sail area figures differ: sailboatdata lists 920 sq ft, while the importer's 2007 sheet quoted 999 sq ft, probably including a larger genoa. Either way the sail area to displacement ratio sits in the high teens, which describes a boat that moves well in moderate breeze but is no light-air flyer. We could not find a published sea trial with measured speeds, so we have not quoted any.

Keels, groundings and the 2005 lesson

Any heavily chartered production boat with an iron keel deserves a careful keel survey, and Bavarias of this period are no exception. In 2005 a Bavaria 42 Match, a different model from the same era, lost its keel during a regatta in Croatia with fatal consequences. Bavaria argued the keel had been weakened by an earlier grounding and that reinforcements were tested and approved by the certifier IMCI; YACHT magazine reported the dispute in detail.

The practical lesson for a 42 Cruiser buyer is not that the design is suspect but that grounding history matters. Ask for haul-out records, look for filled cracks at the keel to hull joint, check the internal grid around the keel bolts for fractures or fresh fairing, and have the surveyor inspect the bolts themselves. A boat that has been dropped hard on a rock in Croatia and patched cosmetically is the one to avoid.

Owning a 42 Cruiser in the US

Used Bavaria 42 Cruisers generally ask between about $88,000 and $140,000 in 2026. That is a lot of boat for the money: three cabins, two heads and a 42-foot hull for the price of a smaller American-built cruiser. Annual costs in the US typically run $14,000 to $28,000 for a slip, insurance, haul-out, bottom paint and routine engine and rigging work.

European boats will usually have 230 volt systems, metric fittings and sometimes a CE-only documentation trail, all manageable but worth pricing in. Saildrive service, standing rigging over 15 years old and tired original sails are the three most common bills a new owner faces in the first two seasons.

How much does a Bavaria 42 Cruiser cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$88K to $140K
Yearly running costs$14K to $28K

The 42 Cruiser was built in large numbers for Mediterranean charter fleets, so supply is good in Europe and condition varies enormously. Boats with the deep lead keel, recent sails and a private ownership history sit at the top of the range. Expect to pay noticeably less than for a Beneteau Oceanis 423 or Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42i of the same year.

Strengths and weaknesses

What owners like

  • Three doubles and two heads, including an en suite forward
  • Very low price for a 42-footer
  • Deep lead keel option
  • Large supply of boats and well-known construction
  • Straightforward systems that any yard can service

What to weigh up

  • Most boats have hard charter histories
  • Standard shoal keel blunts upwind performance
  • Linear galley less secure offshore
  • Conflicting published specs, so verify engine and sail plan

Rivals to consider

Beneteau Oceanis 423

The direct French competitor of the same years, generally pricier used.

Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 42i

Sails a little better and has a strong reputation, also common in charter.

Our verdict on the Bavaria 42 Cruiser

The Bavaria 42 Cruiser is the definition of a sensible used buy: a roomy, simple, three-cabin 42-footer from the era when Bavaria built boats by the thousand, now priced well below its French rivals. It will not thrill a racer, and almost every example has worked hard in charter, but the J&J hull is predictable and the construction is well understood. Spend your effort on the survey, especially around the keel, and favor a deep-keel boat with recent sails and a documented engine history.
