The Azimut 82 is an 84-foot 3-inch flybridge built from 2008 to 2013 with twin Caterpillar C32 diesels, a 28 to 29 knot top end and four en suite cabins. A different Fly 82 with triple IPS pods debuted in 2025.

Best for
  • Crewed family cruising with strong guest and crew separation
  • Buyers who like the 84 but want a lower entry price
  • Mediterranean and Caribbean charter-style use
  • Owners who value a big master suite over speed

Replacing a best seller without breaking it

Power & Motoryacht opened its 2009 report on the Azimut 82 with a lesson in boatbuilding economics: replace a model too late and dealers sit on boats nobody wants, replace it too early and you leave money on the table. Azimut timed the 82 to succeed the 80 Carat, which had run since 2001, and showed the new boat at the Genoa Boat Show in September 2008 and Miami in 2009.

Rather than reinvent the formula, Azimut kept what made the 80 sell and updated what had dated. The 82 is only 7 inches longer than the 80 Carat at 84 feet 3 inches, but it is 1 foot 4 inches wider at 20 feet 4 inches, and PMY reported a big jump in displacement to about 75 tons. YachtBuyer dates production from 2008 to 2013, with the first boats delivered in 2009.

If you are searching for an Azimut 82 for sale, be aware that the name now covers two very different yachts. This page centers on the 2008 to 2013 flybridge. Azimut's all-new Fly 82, launched at Cannes in 2025, has its own section below.

What changed from the 80 Carat

The most visible changes are glass and geometry. The master suite gained four vertical hull windows per side instead of three, the flybridge got a standard hardtop with an integral sunroof where the 80 made do with a bimini, and furniture throughout went from curved to rectilinear. The saloon has three rectangular sofas, and the dining area uses a glass and cherry table with eight chairs rather than a curved banquette.

Under the waterline Azimut reworked the propeller pockets and flattened the aft sections, which PMY put at about 6 degrees of deadrise against 12.5 degrees on the 80, trimming draft slightly to 5 feet 8 inches. The V-drives stayed, but power moved from 1,500 hp MTU 12V 2000s to Caterpillar C32s rated at 1,675 mhp, a change PMY attributed to engine evolution rather than a new philosophy.

  • Length: 84 ft 3 in versus 83 ft 8 in on the 80 Carat
  • Beam: 20 ft 4 in versus 19 ft 0 in
  • Draft: 5 ft 8 in versus 5 ft 11 in
  • Power: twin Caterpillar C32 versus twin MTU 12V 2000

Crew moved to the transom, guests gained privacy

The biggest layout change is below. On the 80 Carat a crew cabin separated the master from the engine room. On the 82 the crew live aft, right against the transom, so the full-beam master could grow and be insulated from the machinery by a full-beam en suite with a full-size tub, a bidet and separate toilets for him and her. The trade-off is that the 80's port and starboard personal watercraft garages disappeared.

In their place, the hydraulic swim platform grew large enough to carry a tender of up to about 14 feet. A VIP cabin with a longitudinal bed and a panoramic window fills the bow, and two guest cabins sit between it and the master, all en suite. The master also has a dinette, which makes it a usable private sitting room during the day.

A main deck built around crew service

Three sliding glass doors open the cockpit and saloon into one room. Forward, the galley and wheelhouse are walled off from the guest area with internal and external watertight doors, so the crew can cook and navigate unseen. The galley sits forward of the dining area behind a bulkhead, a change PMY described as worse for convenience but better for privacy than the 80's open galley opposite the table.

The lower helm moved to starboard, and an L-shaped settee just forward of the stairs gives guests a place to sit with the skipper and watch the run. It is the kind of detail that makes a crewed 82 feel like a small ship rather than a large cabin cruiser.

One hundred square meters outside

Azimut quoted about 100 square meters of outdoor living space from the lifting stern platform to the foredeck sunpad. On the flybridge the helm moved from centerline to starboard, and a bar with a Corian counter, refrigerator, basin, icemaker and built-in barbecue serves the guests. An optional hydromassage tub sits aft, with room behind it for chaise lounges or a tender if the platform is kept clear.

The foredeck gained a settee and dining table, an idea PMY said Azimut borrowed from sister company Benetti, and the cockpit features stainless steel in the overhang structure, the eight-seat table and the grabrails. Standard equipment included teak decks, a passerelle, side boarding gates, a chain wash and a 42-inch pop-up plasma in the saloon.

How the 82 drives, a stretch limo with manners

PMY's tester ran the 82 on a flat Ligurian Sea and called it the nautical equivalent of a stretch limousine: it goes where it is pointed in leisurely, predictable fashion, with the engines a distant thrum. Top speed was around 28 knots on the twin C32s turning 49.6 by 39.4 inch five-blade props through ZF 2060 gearboxes. YachtBuyer lists 29 knots maximum and a 25-knot cruise.

PMY did not publish an rpm-by-rpm fuel table for the 82, and we have not found a verified independent one, so we do not quote a cruise fuel burn here. Ask any seller for engine data logs from that specific boat before you build a budget around a number.

Finding and buying an 82 now

With only about five years of production and a short overlap with the 84 that followed, 82s are scarce. YachtBuyer's tracker showed one boat for sale worldwide, a 2011 hull at $1.7 million, and very little sales history over three years, mostly on the US East Coast and in the Caribbean. That makes comparable sales hard to find, so a buyer's broker should pull data on 80 Carats and 84s as well.

Expect a crewed-yacht budget. A captain, a second crew member in season, insurance, dockage for an 84-foot yacht and annual yard work typically put fixed costs in the low to mid hundreds of thousands before fuel. Boats that have had their Caterpillars, generators and air conditioning serviced by dealers with records are worth a meaningful premium.

The 2025 Azimut Fly 82 is a different yacht

Some of today's "azimut 82" searches are for the new Fly 82 that debuted at the 2025 Cannes Yachting Festival. It shares nothing with the 2008 boat except the number. Motor Boat & Yachting lists it at 81 feet 3 inches with a 19-foot 3-inch beam and 63.2 tonnes full load, built with a carbon superstructure, Alberto Mancini exterior, Fabio Fantolino interior and Pierluigi Ausonio hull lines with 16.3 degrees of deadrise aft.

Power is three Volvo Penta IPS1200s or IPS1350s. On test with the larger engines, MBY averaged 32.2 knots and found the boat happy to stay on plane at about 18 knots. Like the Fly 78, it puts crew forward in the bow and a garage aft that can take a Williams 385 tender. MBY quoted a starting price of 4.5 million euros ex taxes with IPS1200s. Azimut publishes builder figures of 13.71 liters per nautical mile at 21 knots and 14.88 liters per mile at 25 knots. The easiest way to tell the two 82s apart on a listing is the year and the propulsion: 2009 to 2013 boats have twin Caterpillars on shafts, the 2025 boat has three pods.

How much does a Azimut 82 cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$1.2M to $2.1M
Yearly running costs$230K to $420K

The 82 is a rare find; YachtBuyer recently tracked only one for sale, a 2011 boat asking $1.7 million. Values sit between the older 80 Carat and the 84 that followed it, and condition of the Caterpillar C32s, the age of the air conditioning and electronics, and whether the optional flybridge Jacuzzi and hardtop upgrades are fitted drive the spread.

Our verdict on the Azimut 82

The Azimut 82 is a careful evolution rather than a revolution, and that is its appeal. It kept the 80 Carat's proven four-cabin formula, then added beam, glass, a standard hardtop and a far better master suite while moving the crew aft and sealing the service areas off from guests. It will not thrill anyone at the wheel, and finding one to buy takes patience. For a crewed family that wants an understated, well-organized 84-footer at a fraction of new-boat money, an 82 with good Caterpillar records is worth hunting down. Just make sure the listing is the 2008 boat and not the very different 2025 Fly 82.
