The Azimut 54 is a 54 ft 9 in flybridge built from about 2012 to 2017 with twin 725 hp Volvo D11 or 730 hp MAN diesels, three cabins plus crew and a 14 square meter flybridge. U.S. boats ask about $600,000 to $800,000.

Best for
  • Families wanting a three-cabin flybridge at a mid-range price
  • East Coast and Bahamas cruising
  • Owners who prefer shafts to pods
  • Buyers who want most of a 55 for less

The Azimut 54 as a refined Azimut 53

The Azimut 54 came out of the successful Azimut 53 of 2009. YachtBuyer lists the 54 from 2012 to 2017 with the same 16.7-meter length, 4.74-meter beam and 2,340-liter fuel capacity as the 53, and Azimut's descriptions of the two boats share whole paragraphs on construction and the flybridge. Think of it as a 53 with updated styling, interior and engines rather than an all-new design.

The 54 also has a successor that shares its bones: MBY reported that the 2018 Azimut 55 kept almost identical dimensions and window architecture. That makes the 54 the middle chapter of a ten-year family, and usually the best value of the three. An Azimut 54 for sale today will typically be a 2013 to 2015 boat, often listed as the 54 Fly.

Bulkheads first, deck second

Azimut highlighted an unusual building sequence for this hull: the internal bulkheads are installed while the boat is still an open shell, before the deck goes on. That allowed the yard to use every centimeter of the hull for the interior. The squared bow serves a similar purpose, adding volume below while keeping spray off the foredeck and sunpad underway.

Stefano Righini styled the exterior. Compared with the larger mirrored windows of the later Azimut 50 and 55, the 54 is sleek and relatively low; MBY's Dave Marsh, testing the new Azimut 50 in 2014, described walking past the sleek Azimut 54 on his way to the much taller 50.

A 14-square-meter flybridge and an optional hardtop

Azimut claimed the flybridge, at about 14 square meters or 150 square feet, was one of the largest in its class. It has two separate sunbathing areas, a complete bar unit and a dinette for six to eight people, and it could be ordered with a retractable hardtop built into the structure for shade. U.S. buyers in particular should look for that hardtop, which makes the flybridge usable in the Florida summer.

Aft, a lifting swim platform launches a tender of about 3.25 meters, or 10 ft 8 in, and doubles as an easy boarding step after swimming.

Tobacco oak and a galley amidships

The saloon is divided into zones. The galley, with a 220-liter refrigerator and a peninsula fitted with a handrail for safety underway, sits amidships rather than aft, a layout MBY noted when it compared the 54 with the later 55. Leather and fabric sofas, satin finishes and tobacco-colored oak give a warm, classic look, and air conditioning is distributed through wooden slats built into the furniture rather than plastic vents.

Large windows keep the saloon bright, and headroom is full height. If you prefer a galley that connects directly to the cockpit, the 55 is the better choice; if you like the cook to be closer to the dinette and helm, the 54's arrangement works well.

Three cabins, a crew berth and a full-beam master

YachtBuyer lists the 54 with a master cabin with private bathroom, a VIP and a twin cabin sharing the second head, plus a single-berth crew cabin with its own head. That follows the 53, whose full-beam master amidships with large hull windows, a breakfast dinette and 6 ft 4 in of headroom PMY compared to a much larger yacht.

As on the 53, the VIP and twin cabins have less storage than the master, so couples planning long trips should check hanging space. The crew cabin aft is used for storage on many owner-run boats.

Volvo D11 or MAN, and what to expect underway

Most U.S. boats have twin Volvo Penta D11-725 diesels of 725 hp on shafts, the engine YachtBuyer lists, and a 2014 boat advertised in Florida had 820 hours on its D11s. Some boats, especially European deliveries, have twin MAN 730 hp diesels; a 2013 boat in Miami with 840 hours is one example. Azimut quoted a 33-knot top speed and a 28-knot cruise.

We did not find an independent sea trial of the 54 itself. PMY's test of the closely related 53 with 715 hp Caterpillar C12s reached 25 knots from rest in under 18 seconds and praised its solid, responsive ride, which is a fair guide to what the 54 feels like. Without a fuel curve, budget fuel on the basis of a 53 to 55 foot twin-diesel flybridge cruising in the mid-20s.

The first AZ 54, Righini's debut

The name has older roots. Azimut's heritage page says the AZ 54 of 1994 was the first yacht Stefano Righini designed for the brand, with a side staircase to the lower deck, a rounded central helm and saloon and dinette on one level. MBY's test of the Azimut 46 later called the AZ 54's helm design near perfection.

Those boats, sometimes listed as the Cinquantaquattro or the 54/56 and 54/58, still appear on the market. U.S. examples from 1996 have three staterooms, three heads and crew quarters, about 688 gallons of fuel and MTU V8 diesels of around 756 hp, and ask about $222,500 to $295,000; one has been repowered with Volvo D13s. They are a completely different boat from the 2012 54, so make sure you are comparing like with like.

What 54s sell for and cost to run

U.S. listings in 2026 put 2015 boats at $639,000 to $699,000, a 2014 boat at $744,500 and a 2013 MAN boat with a Seakeeper at $977,700. That places the 54 well below the $929,000 to $1.4 million asked for 2019 to 2022 Azimut 55s, which share much of its hull. For many buyers, the 54 is the value pick of the family.

Running costs for a 54 in the U.S. should be about $65,000 to $125,000 a year, including slip, insurance, engine and generator service, bottom paint, canvas and some captain hours. Add gyro service if one is fitted.

How much does a Azimut 54 cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$600K to $800K
Yearly running costs$65K to $125K

U.S. asks for the 54 are tightly grouped: 2015 boats at $639,000 to $699,000 and a 2014 boat with 820 hours on Volvo D11-725s at $744,500. A 2013 MAN-powered boat with a Seakeeper asked $977,700, well above the rest. Gyro stabilization, the integrated hardtop, engine hours and whether the boat was U.S.-delivered matter most to price.

Our verdict on the Azimut 54

The Azimut 54 is the sensible middle child of Azimut's 53, 54 and 55 family: the same practical hull and big flybridge as its siblings, with three cabins, a crew berth and conventional shafts, at a price well below a 55. It lacks an independent test, its galley is less social than the 55's and its decor is more traditional. For buyers who want a three-cabin Italian flybridge with room for guests and a captain, a well-serviced 54 with a hardtop and gyro is one of the better values in the 55-foot class.
