Why the Ferretti 780 became the yard's volume big boat

Searches for the Ferretti 780, or simply the Ferretti 78, almost always mean this boat: the 78-foot 9-inch flybridge that premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2017 and reached the Fort Lauderdale show two months later. Ferretti never sold a model called the 78, so the 780 is the 78-footer people have in mind. Yachting reported that more than 60 hulls were delivered in eight years before the new Ferretti Yachts 800 took its place in 2025, which makes it one of the most common big Ferrettis on the brokerage market.

Ferretti framed it as the link between its sub-70-foot boats and the larger yachts, filling a gap between the 700 and the 850. It came out of the Product Strategy Committee, the Ferretti Group Engineering Department and Studio Zuccon International Project, and borrowed the idea of hull windows lined up with each cabin from the smaller 450 and 550.

European, American or Far East main deck

The 780's defining trait is that the same hull carries three different main decks. The European version puts an enclosed galley to starboard ahead of the salon and a discreet wheelhouse forward, so captain and chef can work out of sight. The US version opens everything into a country-kitchen galley with long sightlines from cockpit to windshield, aimed at couples who run the boat themselves. A Far East version, sold as Tai He Ban, moves the galley below, puts a large round dining and games table on the main deck and gives up the owner's cabin for a full-beam karaoke room.

When you shop used, the layout matters more than the model year. A European-plan boat feels like a small superyacht with defined crew zones; an American-plan boat feels like a big open loft. Motor Boat and Yachting liked the US arrangement for making the best use of the salon's size, so ask for the general arrangement drawing of the actual boat before you fly to see it.

  • European: enclosed starboard galley, separate wheelhouse, crew circulation forward
  • American: open country-kitchen galley and helm area, one continuous main deck
  • Tai He Ban (Asia): galley below, entertainment-focused salon and lower deck

Beach club stern, foredeck lounge and flybridge

Ferretti called the stern a real beach club. Two panels in the transom fold down to make seats at water level, and the hydraulic platform lifts about 450 kilograms, roughly 990 pounds, so it handles a jet tender of modest size. The cockpit is protected by the extended flybridge overhang, and three-part glass doors fold to starboard beside the flybridge stairs.

Forward, a sunpad and a U-shaped sofa make the foredeck a second lounge. The flybridge has a sunpad aft to port, a teak dining table with U-shaped seating, a companion seat opposite the portside helm, and room for freestanding furniture. A roll bar was standard, with a modular hardtop offering a central awning or glass canopy as options, and one US listing shows a teppanyaki grill on the flybridge.

A full-beam master and three more en suite cabins

Below, four en suite cabins sleep eight. The full-beam master amidships gets light through large glazed panels with an integrated opening port, a separate shower, a walk-in wardrobe behind the bed, a vanity and study area, a sofa and a lounge chair. A double VIP sits in the bow and two twin cabins share the space between, each with its own head. Even the smallest twin berths measure about 6 feet 3 inches by 28 inches, and headroom bottoms out at 6 feet 4 inches in the wheelhouse.

Crew live in the stern behind the engine room. Early boats had good en suite accommodation for two; the updated layout lists two cabins and two heads for up to four crew.

What changed in the 2021 update

Ferretti gave the 780 a mid-life refresh shown at the 2021 Cannes Yachting Festival. Outside, the only clear tell is a new, larger hull window for the owner's cabin. Inside, the European plan gained a central day head and a fixed glass partition between galley and salon that can be fitted with sliding panels, while the US plan became fully open from windshield to cockpit. The Far East option continued.

For buyers this creates two sub-generations. Boats from 2021 onward cost more, but they bring the bigger master window, a more flexible galley and generally lower engine hours.

V12-1400 or V12-1550 and what they deliver

Standard power is twin MAN V12-1400s, quoted at 28 knots top and about 24 knots cruise with a 300-mile range. The V12-1550s raise that to about 31 knots top and a 26 to 27-knot cruise, with range dropping to about 280 miles because of the higher burn. Ferretti's own figure is 411 liters per hour, about 109 gallons, at 24 knots. A Seakeeper gyro was standard equipment.

Motor Boat and Yachting tested a V12-1550 boat out of Cannes and recorded 30.1 knots. It found the boat agile from about 1,600 rpm with fly-by-wire electro-hydraulic steering and a three-screen Simrad and Naviop helm, noted 66 dB(A) in the master at 20 knots and no perceptible vibration, and reported a range of 1,638 miles at 6.7 knots. The one criticism was a willingness to roll in a beam sea, even with the gyro, which it blamed on the weight of the tall hardtop.

The other Ferretti 780, built from 2006

An older, unrelated Ferretti 780 previewed for the Cannes show in September 2006 and was built until about 2010. Ferretti's technical sheet from the time gives it a 78-foot 11-inch length, a 19-foot 6-inch beam, 5,900 liters of fuel and twin MTU 2000-series diesels rated at 1,650 hp each, with predicted speeds of 33 knots top and 31 knots cruise and a light displacement of 50 tonnes. It has the older Ferretti look with smaller windows and a cherry-and-lacquer interior.

These boats sell for far less, with a 2007 example listed in Miami at about $1.6 million. If a listing just says Ferretti 780, check the year: anything built between 2006 and 2010 is the earlier design, not the Zuccon boat described on this page.

Ferretti 780 for sale, values and running costs

With more than 60 built, the 780 is easier to shop than most 80-foot flybridges, and prices spread widely by year and hours. US asking prices seen in 2025 and 2026 run from about $2.5 million for a 2018 or 2019 boat to almost $4.9 million for a nearly new 2023 hull with 300 hours. Expect the reduced price, not the first one, to be the real market: one 2019 boat came down $400,000 in a few months.

Running a 780 properly means a full-time captain and usually a mate. Budget for MAN servicing at 1,000-hour intervals, two Onan generators, the gyro, bottom paint and props, insurance and dockage for a 79-foot boat. A realistic US total is about $230,000 to $400,000 a year before depreciation, with fuel the biggest variable.

Our verdict on the Ferretti Yachts 780

The Ferretti 780 earned its sales record honestly. It is not the fastest or the most radical 78-footer, but it is quiet, solid, well engineered and flexible enough to be either an open family boat or a properly crewed yacht, depending on which main deck you pick. The smartest buys are post-2021 boats with the V12-1550s and the European layout if you run with crew, or the US layout if you drive yourself. Ignore the cheaper 2006 to 2010 780 unless you knowingly want a much older design.
