One platform, three looks

Azimut launched the 72 at the Cannes Yachting Festival in 2015 with Stefano Righini styling and a Carlo Galeazzi interior, slotting it just above the then-current Azimut 70. YachtBuyer records a second phase from 2021, when the boat was marketed as the Fly 72, and a third from 2023, when Alberto Mancini restyled the exterior and architect Fabio Fantolino, in his first boat project, designed a new interior. Power & Motoryacht described the 2024 boat as a beautiful update to a model first unveiled in 2016.

The bones have stayed the same. Azimut's current figures of 74 feet 5 inches overall, about 18 feet 5 inches of beam, 117,593 pounds at full load, 1,373 gallons of fuel and twin 1,400 hp MAN V12s match the 2015 boat closely, so used and new 72s can be compared directly on condition and specification. The Azimut 72S of 2009 to 2014 is a different boat, an S collection sport yacht with 1,800 hp MANs and its own guide.

Carbon on top, infusion below

The 72 was the first Azimut with an all-carbon flybridge and T-top, Power & Motoryacht reported, and Yachting added that the deckhouse is carbon too, saving about 30 percent of the weight of an equivalent fiberglass superstructure. The hull, deck and interior trays are vacuum-infused fiberglass, which uses less material and lets the floors sit lower for more headroom. Azimut now markets the approach as Carbon Tech and says it also cuts roll momentum by up to 15 percent.

The payoff shows when you compare it with the boat it replaced. Power & Motoryacht found the 72 had 25 percent more interior volume than the Azimut 70 on a very similar beam, yet weighed only 18 percent more and was just as fast on the same engines.

A flybridge that covers half the boat

Yachting measured the flybridge at about 409 square feet, only 32 square feet less than Azimut's 80-footer of the time. On the current boat a carbon roof covers roughly half of it, with a large electric sunroof, a wet bar with optional grill, a U-shaped settee by the helm and curved sofas aft behind a glass balustrade. Motor Boat & Yachting's only grumble was that the beautiful fixed tables do not fold or adjust.

Reviewers of the 2023 boat were even more taken with the foredeck. A sofa faces a sun pad whose headrests fold into aft-facing seats, shaded by a carbon-supported awning, and Motor Boat & Yachting called it the best foredeck lounge it had seen on any flybridge of this size.

A single-level saloon with the galley amidships

The main deck is on one level from the cockpit doors to the helm, with 6 feet 9 to 6 feet 10 inches of headroom. A lounge sits aft, a dining table to starboard looks out through floor-to-ceiling glass made possible by cut-down bulwarks, and the galley is amidships to port, open on family boats or closed off for crewed charter. A small breakfast dinette beside the lower helm is a favorite spot of most reviewers.

The two decors are very different. The 2015 boats mixed matte oak with high-gloss ebony or sycamore and lots of polished stainless, which Motor Boat & Yachting called the best finish it had seen on an Azimut. Fantolino's 2023 scheme uses matte timbers, bronze and soft neutral tones, which YachtBuyer felt struck a better balance than some earlier, bolder Azimut interiors.

Four en suite cabins at 72 feet

Motor Boat & Yachting pointed out that four cabins all with their own bathrooms are normally found on 75 to 78 footers. On the 72 the full-beam master sits amidships with 6 feet 7 inches of headroom, big rectangular hull windows, a dinette and a walk-in wardrobe, with its head and closet against the engine room bulkhead as a sound barrier. The VIP is forward, a double cabin to port has a head that doubles as the day head, and a twin cabin to starboard has its own.

Crew quarters aft have a captain's cabin and a second berth, reached by the transom door or a cockpit hatch, with a head that also houses the washer and dryer. Power & Motoryacht's 2024 review of the latest boat counted a Seakeeper 18 in a hatch aft of the engine room.

Speed, fuel and range on test

Power & Motoryacht's 2016 test of the first 72, carrying 13 people, recorded 33.1 knots at full throttle and a fast cruise of 26 knots at 103.8 gph, with a sound reading of just 72 dB(A) at that speed. Alan Harper found a little downward trim gained half a knot around 1,600 rpm and said the boat would be happy all day at 18 knots. Yachting saw 32 knots off Cannes.

The 2023 boat is a little more conservative on top speed. Motor Boat & Yachting reached almost 32 knots, faster than a Princess Y72 with 500 hp more, and measured 254 liters per hour at 20.7 knots, or 12.27 liters per nautical mile, which it said is almost 30 percent better than a Pearl 72. Azimut's own figures, witnessed by Lloyd's Register to ISO 8666, give 451 nautical miles at 14.8 knots and 323 at 26 knots. Azimut lists Humphree automatic interceptors and an automatic fuel transfer pump, which keeps the boat level as the tanks empty, among the current boat's technologies.

An engine room built for mechanics

Every test praised the machinery space. The V12s sit flat on down-angle gearboxes with the tanks outboard and two generators stacked aft, and headroom is close to seven feet. Power & Motoryacht's 2024 reviewer liked the ElectroSea strainers, a pre-plumbed port for an optional watermaker and a central tool shelf. Motor Boat & Yachting noted a watertight door from the crew area as well as cockpit access.

On deck there are boarding gates on both sides of the cockpit, an optional third control station with joystick hidden in the flybridge support for stern-to mooring, and foot switches at the bow so a crew member can drop the anchor precisely. These details make the 72 a realistic owner-operator boat for an experienced skipper, although most US owners still keep a captain.

What each generation costs

New, the restyled Fly 72 started at 3.3 million euros before VAT in 2023, so a US-specified boat with stabilizer, joystick and electronics packages will land somewhere around $3.9 million to $4.6 million; options add up quickly, with Motor Boat & Yachting citing 45,000 euros for the bronze hull band alone. Used 2015 to 2020 boats typically ask $2.1 million to $3 million, and 2021 to 2024 boats about $2.6 million to $3.6 million.

Expect annual running costs of $220,000 to $380,000 in Florida with a full-time captain, insurance, a 75-foot slip, MAN and generator service, Seakeeper maintenance and a haul-out. At about 100 gph at 26 knots, fuel alone becomes a major line item if you cruise fast.

Our verdict on the Azimut Fly 72

The Azimut 72 has been refined rather than replaced for a decade, and that is its strength. Carbon up top gives it the volume for four en suite cabins and a vast flybridge without hurting the ride, the MAN V12s on shafts deliver low-30-knot speeds and sensible economy, and the engine room is one of the best in the class. Buy a 2015 to 2020 boat for the best value, or the Mancini and Fantolino version if you want the freshest design and the outstanding foredeck. Either way, it is one of the most rounded 72-foot flybridges on the market.
