The Azimut 58 Atlantis and its flagship moment

The Azimut 58 Atlantis is the largest boat ever built under the Atlantis name. Barche reported that it was due to be officially presented at the Cannes boat show in September 2011, and Atlantis CEO Luca Sburlati later confirmed the 38 and 58 as the brand's Cannes and Genoa debuts that year. It completed the Neo Design renewal of the range that had begun with the 48 and 44 in 2010, and it sat at the top of a lineup that, by 2015, Yachting described as running from 34 to 58 feet.

Power and Motoryacht introduced it to US readers in November 2011 as the flagship of Azimut-Benetti's Atlantis open line, quoting a top speed above 40 mph (about 36 knots) on twin 1,000 hp MANs. Its successor at the top of the range was the smaller but newer Atlantis 51 of 2018.

Not to be confused with the Azimut 58 flybridge

Azimut has also built 58-foot flybridge yachts under its main brand, and they appear in the same search results. They are different boats: raised-saloon flybridge cruisers with an upper helm. The Atlantis 58 is an open-backed hardtop sport yacht with a single deck level from helm to stern and all accommodation below. If a listing mentions a flybridge, it is not this boat.

High topsides and a helm near amidships

Neo Design gave the 58 tall, muscular topsides capped by a compact, low superstructure. The helm is placed almost amidships, which Barche says was done to improve visibility for the skipper and co-pilot and to make maneuvering easier, and which also puts the driver where the motion is gentlest in a seaway.

The main deck runs on one level from the console to the aft sun pad, all in teak. An electrically operated hardtop shades the middle of the boat, and wraparound side windows open for ventilation. A C-shaped sofa around a large teak table seats ten, and a three-meter bar unit to starboard carries a grill, fridge, ice maker, stainless sink, pantry and a 26-inch TV in a watertight pop-up housing.

Aft, the sun pad's backrest swings up to make forward-facing seats while still leaving room for one person to lie down behind. A second pad lives on the foredeck.

  • Two stern options: big sofas with lockers and a garage for a tender up to 2.85 meters, or a C-shaped sofa with folding table and extra sunbathing
  • Up and down swim platform for a tender or jet ski
  • Optional enclosed saloon version shown in YachtBuyer's deck plans
  • CE category A with a 14-person limit

A third cabin that can be anything

The standard lower deck puts a full-beam, full-height master amidships with a centerline rectangular berth, twin wardrobes, a vanity, minibar and pop-up TV, plus a head with separate WC and shower. The VIP is forward with a panoramic hull window and its own head. Between them is a dinette with a full galley: four-burner hob, combi oven, dishwasher, wine cooler and a 270-liter fridge. Barche quoted average headroom of 1.95 to 2 meters (about 6 feet 5 inches to 6 feet 7 inches).

The third cabin is the clever part. Atlantis pitched it as a media room with a sofa whose removable backrests turn it into a double, an LCD screen and connections for music players and game consoles. Factory alternatives turn it into a studio or a gym, and YachtBuyer's plans show two-cabin versions with either. There is also accommodation for up to two crew.

For a US family the most practical choice is the standard three-cabin plan; for a couple who entertain by day, the studio or gym version gives the boat a real point of difference.

MAN V8 power and the speed claims

Two engine packages were listed, both MAN V8 diesels on V-drives and conventional shafts. With the 1,000 hp V8-1000s the yard predicted 36 knots maximum and a 33-knot cruise; with the 1,200 hp V8-1200s, 38 knots maximum and 34 knots cruise. The hull was developed with specific deadrise studies, 17 degrees at the transom, to improve the ride in a building sea.

We found no independent instrumented test with a full speed and fuel table, so treat these as builder figures. With 3,000 liters (793 gallons) of fuel, the 58 carries more than most sport yachts of its size, which helps with longer Mediterranean or Bahamas hops even if the V8s are thirsty at full cruise.

What ownership really costs

A 62-foot open with 2,000 to 2,400 hp is a serious running commitment. Expect $70,000 to $130,000 a year in the US for slip, insurance, haul-out and bottom paint, MAN servicing, generator and air conditioning upkeep, fuel for 80 to 100 hours and part-time crew or a delivery captain. Owners who keep the boat in the Med with full-time crew will spend more.

Finding and pricing a 58

The 58 was built in modest numbers from 2011, with the brand's flagship role passing to the Atlantis 51 in 2018. Most boats are in Italy, Croatia, Greece, France and Spain. Expect asking prices of roughly $550,000 to $900,000, with V8-1200 boats, well specified third cabins and fresh engine service at the top. US buyers should confirm VAT and duty status and that the boat's electrical system and air conditioning suit American shore power.

How much does a Azimut Atlantis 58 cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$550K to $900K
Yearly running costs$70K to $130K

Few Atlantis 58s were sold in the US, so most comparables are Mediterranean boats priced in euros. The MAN V8-1200 engines, the layout chosen for the third cabin, the enclosed saloon option, crew cabin fit-out and the condition of the electric hardtop and big V8s matter far more than the exact year. These figures are estimates; confirm against current listings.

Our verdict on the Azimut Atlantis 58

The Azimut 58 Atlantis is a big, handsome open sport yacht with genuine flagship presence, a superb single-level deck and a third cabin you can tailor to your life. It also has big MAN V8s to feed, no independent test data and a thin used market, so it is a boat to buy with a specialist surveyor and an engine expert on board. Found in good order, it offers 60-foot Italian open-boat living for well under the price of newer rivals.
