What the Sea Ray Sundancer 370 actually is

The Sea Ray Sundancer 370 is the boat Sea Ray used to reset its whole cruiser line. In 2018 the company stopped building yachts over 40 feet to concentrate on sport boats and cruisers, and the Sundancer 370 Outboard, sea trialed by the magazines in late 2020 and launched as a 2021 model, was its first all-new cruiser after that decision. Company president Steve Langlais told Power and Motoryacht it was "much more than a replacement" for the Sundancer 350 it displaced, and that is fair: the hull, deck, styling and power choice were all new.

Two versions share the name today. The Sundancer 370 Outboard measures 39 ft 9 in overall with its engines and runs triple Mercury Verado 300 V8 outboards. The Sundancer 370 without the suffix, announced in December 2022 with first deliveries in spring 2023, is 37 ft 8 in and uses twin 430 hp MerCruiser 8.2L MAG HO ECT sterndrives with Bravo Three X drives and joystick piloting. Both have a 12 ft beam, a 250 gallon fuel tank, a 46 gallon water tank and a cabin that sleeps four. When people search for the Sundancer 370 price or the 370 Sundancer on the brokerage market, they are almost always looking at one of these two boats, so check which drive system a listing has before comparing numbers.

A bow cockpit on a cruiser, and the design cues that came with it

Traditional Sundancers put a walk-through windshield in front of a solid foredeck with a sun pad. The 370 instead gives the bow a proper seating area: a three-across lounge with armrests that wraps forward into aft-facing seats, sockets for a table, a filler cushion to make a sun pad and an optional shade on carbon poles. Access is through a glass door to port that is part of the windshield when closed. BoatTEST praised the way it works, folding down and inward on gas struts and latching with one handle, and the air dam below it closes from outside so the wind cannot blow it open.

Because guests now walk forward along the port side, the cabin entrance moved too. A sliding door left of the helm leads down a gentle ramp rather than steps, another detail BoatTEST singled out. The helm is to starboard with twin 16 inch Simrad displays on launch boats, CZone digital switching, joystick control and a Fusion stereo. Sea Ray used the boat to introduce its newer design language: a long S-sheer line, a center crease, a sharp jawline below it, a backlit integrated logo and a diamond pattern repeated in the cockpit sole, the upholstery, the speaker grilles and the fritting on the glass sunroof.

  • Open hardtop is standard; the Coupe enclosure with full side glass was about $6,597 extra in 2021
  • Hardtop height about 6 ft 8 in above the cockpit sole; bridge clearance 10 ft 8 in, 12 ft 4 in with radar
  • Cockpit: J-shaped seating to starboard, L-shaped to port, wet bar with sink and optional grill and fridge drawer

Below decks, a real weekend cabin for four

Plenty of 40 foot outboard boats now carry a cuddy that is really a changing room. The 370 does not. BoatTEST measured 7 ft of overhead in the main cabin, which gets light from a skylight and two hull windows. The galley sits to port with a sink, microwave, refrigerator and solid-surface counter. Forward, an L-shaped lounge with a 32 inch TV converts at the push of a button: the seatback lifts and becomes the foot of a berth that measured 71 by 81 inches.

Aft, under the cockpit, the mid-cabin is a U-shaped lounge with its own TV that becomes an 81 by 53 inch double when the seatbacks drop into the footwell, no filler boards required. The head is to starboard with a separate walk-in shower and its own hull window. Two couples or a family of four can genuinely spend a weekend aboard without anyone sleeping in the cockpit.

Triple Verado 300s on the clock

Every test boat we found ran the standard triple Mercury Verado 300 V8s, and the numbers agree closely. BoatTEST recorded 50.8 mph (44.2 knots) at 5,900 rpm and a best economy cruise of 38.2 mph (33.2 knots) at 4,500 rpm burning 42.8 gph, good for about 0.9 mpg and 201 statute miles with a 10 percent reserve. Power and Motoryacht saw 44.6 knots in Sarasota Bay, and Boating ran over 51 mph with full fuel and five aboard. Planing took 5.7 seconds and 30 mph came in 14.4 seconds.

Two handling notes matter. The hull holds plane down to about 15 or 16 mph, useful in a building sea, but if you ease the throttles up slowly it hangs bow-high in the transition, so BoatTEST advises pushing through and then pulling back to cruise. Around 4,000 rpm the ride is dry and clean.

The sterndrive Sundancer 370 is slower and simpler. Sea Ray quotes a 36 to 38 mph cruise, 42 to 44 mph wide open and a range of about 135 miles at cruise on twin MerCruiser 8.2L engines. It weighs about 20,800 lb dry without engines, drafts 42 inches with drives down and 31 inches trimmed up, and suits owners who want gas inboard-style economics, one fewer engine to service and a cleaner swim platform.

The V12 option, Seakeeper and the systems that make it easy

For 2022 Sea Ray added twin Mercury V12 600 Verados as an option on the outboard model, taking total power from 900 to 1,200 hp. Boating noted that the V12 is the quietest, smoothest engine its staff had run at this size, with a two-speed transmission, contra-rotating props and a gearcase that steers while the powerhead stays put. We have not seen a published instrumented test of a V12 370, so treat any speed claims for that package carefully. What it clearly buys is refinement, docking control and resale appeal.

Options worth finding on a used boat include the Seakeeper 3 (about $54,000 in 2021), Dynamic Running Surface automatic trim, the opening sunroof, the Coupe enclosure and premium Fusion audio. A cockpit hatch opens into a centralized mechanical room with the generator, gyro, sea strainers and DC breakers, far easier to service than older Sundancers. Sea Ray's three-year bow-to-stern warranty covers 2015 and newer USA-built Sundancers, and the hull carries a 10-year limited structural warranty for the original owner, so ask what transfers.

Who the 370 suits, and who should look elsewhere

The 370 is ideal for a couple or young family moving up from a 30 foot bowrider or a Sundancer 320 who want the bow lounge and big cockpit of a dayboat plus a cabin that works for two nights. It is also a good fit for boaters in shallow areas, since outboards trim clear and the hull draws about 29 inches with engines up.

It is less suited to owners who cruise for weeks, need a second head or run long distances on a budget. The single head and 40-plus gph fuel burn are the price of all that deck space; buyers in that camp should compare a used 40 foot express with inboard diesels.

Sundancer 370 price, used values and running costs

Launch pricing set the frame: about $679,000 to $783,000 for a base outboard boat in 2021 and $899,000 to $1.15 million well equipped. With several years of price increases since, we estimate a new Sundancer 370 Outboard in 2026 at roughly $850,000 to $1.2 million depending on enclosure, gyro and power, and the sterndrive version below that. Used boats from 2021 to 2025 generally ask $520,000 to $950,000, with V12 boats and late Coupe models at the top.

Annual running costs, excluding depreciation, land around $45,000 to $85,000 for insurance, a 40 foot slip, storage, outboard service, bottom paint, canvas and fuel. At 43 gph, 100 hours of cruising burns well over $20,000 of gasoline.

How much does a Sea Ray Sundancer 370 cost?

New, typical sail-away$850K to $1.2M
Used, typical asking$520K to $950K
Yearly running costs$45K to $85K

At launch in 2021 Power and Motoryacht quoted a base of $679,000 and an as-tested price of $899,000, while Boating listed $782,800 with the standard triple Verado 300s and about $1.15 million for a well-equipped boat on twin V12 600s. Coupe enclosure, Seakeeper 3, V12 power and the electronics package move the price far more than model year. The sterndrive Sundancer 370 that arrived for 2023 is the cheaper way in, and expect outboard boats on V12s to sit at the top of the used range.

Our verdict on the Sea Ray Sundancer 370

The Sundancer 370 is the most convincing modern Sundancer because it does not pretend to be a small yacht. It is a big-deck dayboat with a cabin good enough for real weekends, full of details that make daily use easier, and it runs well on outboards or sterndrives. Buy the outboard version with a gyro and the Coupe enclosure for range of weather and resale; buy the sterndrive for a lower entry price and simpler maintenance. Either way, budget honestly for fuel and options.
