Galeon 430 Skydeck, a flybridge that hides in plain sight

The Galeon 430 is a boat for people who cannot decide between a sleek hardtop express and a flybridge, and refuse to choose. Galeon's answer was the Skydeck: a compact upper helm tucked into the roofline, reached by a fold-down ladder from the cockpit, with a center helm seat flanked by two lounges. From the dock it reads as a low, sporty coupe. Underway you can climb up and drive in the open air with two companions beside you.

YachtBuyer dates the model from 2012 to 2023, and Galeon described it as the evolution of its 400 series, combining the flybridge and hardtop versions of that platform. That matters when you shop: the 430 Skydeck shares its 13-foot 8-inch beam and 291-gallon fuel capacity with the 430 HTC hardtop coupe and the first-generation 420 Fly, so parts, surveyors' knowledge and owner experience carry across all three.

What the upper helm can and cannot do

Do not expect a party deck. BoatTest summed up the Skydeck as a space for sunning and piloting and little more, and that is fair. The helm pedestal sits on the centerline with a 12-inch Raymarine display, Volvo Penta EVC readouts, an autopilot head, digital throttles and trim tab rockers, duplicating the essentials of the lower station. The lounges on either side have backrests that flip to make forward-facing seats beside the skipper or aft-facing sunbeds.

Forward of the Skydeck, a series of carbon fiber panels forms an opening sunroof over the saloon and lower helm. With the roof open and the side windows at the galley and helm lowered electrically, the main deck feels nearly as airy as a true open boat. It is a lighter and far simpler structure than a full flybridge, which keeps weight high up to a minimum and air draft to 14 feet 5 inches.

A cockpit that rearranges itself five ways

The modular cockpit is the 430 Skydeck's party piece, and BoatTest compared it to a Swiss Army knife. Two facing seat modules ride on tracks and slide toward or away from a central console. The wooden table in that console rises, scissors open and unfolds its leaves for dining, drops for cocktail mode, or sinks flush so a filler cushion and the slid-together seats form one large aft-facing sun pad. Galeon claimed five distinct layouts from the same hardware.

Aft, the swim platform extends 4 feet 2 inches beyond the cockpit, with a teak-lined hatch hiding the boarding ladder. Most boats carry the optional hydraulic platform, which Galeon bundled in its Luxury Pack, and it turns the stern into a tender lift and a beach. One small trap: a 3-inch step between platform and cockpit sole that BoatTest predicted would catch almost everyone at least once.

Black walnut, Alcantara and a raised galley

Through three smoked-glass sliding doors, the saloon has a U-shaped dinette to starboard around a high-low table that rotates and expands, and a loveseat to port that splits so half can slide over to seat six for dinner. A 30-inch TV rises from behind the loveseat. The galley sits forward to port, up a 9-inch step, with a two-burner cooktop, microwave, icemaker and a 130-liter fridge-freezer under a Corian counter.

Finish is the strongest selling point. BoatTest found black walnut joinery so precise that no caulk was needed to hide seams, Alcantara suede on headliners and bulkheads, and diamond-stitched upholstery, and rated the fit and finish best in class from bilge to radar arch. The single-piece windshield measures roughly 9 by 5 feet, and it also lights the lower deck.

Three cabins, with honest headroom numbers

Few 43-footers sleep six in three separate cabins, and the 430 does it by tucking two twin cabins amidships under the saloon sole. The master is forward with 6 feet 5 inches of headroom at the entrance, a 7-foot skylight, an island berth and an en suite head with a walk-in shower set into granite. The two midship cabins each offer 6 feet 3 inches at the door, but clearance falls to 3 feet 6 inches over the port berths and 2 feet 11 inches to starboard, so they suit children and flexible adults. Both use filler cushions to join their twin berths, and they share the day head, which is a wet head without a separate stall.

Galeon offered a galley-down arrangement that moves the cooking below and frees up the saloon. On the related 430 HTC, Boating described the guest cabin in the two-cabin plan as roomy and the optional third cabin as cavelike and low, which reflects the same trade-off. Decide whether you need six berths before you shortlist boats.

  • Master: 6 ft 5 in headroom at entry, island berth, en suite with walk-in shower
  • Midship cabins: 6 ft 3 in at the door, under 3 ft 6 in over the berths
  • Air conditioning: 44,000 BTU Dometic system on the BoatTest boat

Volvo D6 shafts and the speed you can expect

BoatTest listed twin Volvo Penta D6-435 diesels on straight shafts with bronze propellers, EVC electronic controls, hydraulic steering and trim tabs as standard. Galeon's own literature listed IPS, sterndrive, Aquadrive and Axius installations too, so check exactly what any boat carries. The builder reported a top speed of 29.9 knots with the D6-435 shafts, from a trial on the Vistula River with five people and full tanks.

No independent fuel curve for the Skydeck has been published, but Boating's test of the sister 430 HTC on the same D6-435 shafts reached 30.3 knots, which supports the factory number. Expect a fast cruise in the low 20s. Boating's main complaint on the HTC applies here too: engine room access is small and complicated, so budget extra labor hours for routine service.

Shopping for a used Galeon 430

Searches for a Galeon 430 can also turn up the 430 HTC, a hardtop coupe on the same platform without the upper helm, and the 2025 Galeon 430 EXP, a completely different 45-foot 9-inch mini explorer with a vertical bow. The Skydeck is easy to identify by the helm pod and lounges sitting in the roof above the cockpit and by the fold-down ladder.

US inventory is thin. When this guide was written YachtBuyer tracked a single 2017 example, in New Jersey at $465,000, and none elsewhere. That scarcity cuts both ways: a well-kept boat sells to a narrow but motivated audience, while a tired one can sit for months. Ownership runs about $40,000 to $80,000 a year in the US, excluding depreciation, for slip, insurance, Volvo service, generator upkeep and bottom paint.

Figures come from builder documentation and independent tests where available. Displacement is usually quoted light, so a loaded cruising boat will weigh more. Compare these specs with another model.

How much does a Galeon 430 Skydeck cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$300K to $600K
Yearly running costs$40K to $80K

Few 430 Skydecks were sold in the US, so asking prices swing on condition and options more than age. A 2017 boat in New Jersey was listed at $465,000 in 2026. For context, Boating quoted a $879,000 base price for the closely related 430 HTC in 2018. Boats with the Luxury Pack hydraulic platform, joystick docking and a fresh survey sit at the top of the range.

Our verdict on the Galeon 430 Skydeck

The Galeon 430 Skydeck is a niche boat that does its niche very well. If you want the open-air helm of a flybridge but prefer the profile, weight and air draft of a coupe, nothing else at 43 feet works quite like it, and the cockpit and joinery are a level above most rivals. Accept that the Skydeck is a driving perch rather than a lounge, that the midship cabins are for kids, and that service access is tight. Find one with documented D6 maintenance and working mechanisms, pay a fair price, and you will own an unusual boat that still turns heads.
