Why buyers still hunt for a Formula 45 Yacht for sale

Most people searching for a Formula 45 Yacht for sale already know the brand from a lake or a sandbar. Formula built its reputation on painted performance cruisers and sterndrive Super Sports, and the 45 Yacht was the moment the Porter family company took that DNA and stretched it into a proper two-stateroom diesel yacht. It was introduced in 2006, carried the flagship title for more than a decade, and by 2018 Formula had delivered roughly 190 of them.

That production run is the reason the boat matters on the brokerage market today. Few American express cruisers of this size were built in such numbers with such consistent finish quality, so there is a deep pool of used boats to compare. Formula built the yacht range starting in 2002, and the 45 Yacht became its best known member. The current Formula lineup has moved on to Super Sport Crossovers and the 457 center consoles, which means every 45 Yacht you see listed is a used boat, and the smartest buyers treat the model year, the propulsion package and the maintenance history as three separate decisions.

The coupe hardtop that made it an all-weather boat

When Power and Motoryacht tested the first boats in 2006, it noted that the 45 was the first Formula with a standard composite coupe hardtop. That top is the heart of the design. A curved, tempered glass windshield with a centerline walk-through wraps the bridge deck, an electric sunroof opens the middle, and a zip-in aft curtain closes the whole space into a climate controlled room. The test boat carried 30,000 BTU of Marine Air on the bridge deck alone, with another 19,000 BTU for the cabins below.

The result is a boat that works in April on Lake Michigan as well as in August in Fort Lauderdale. Under the hardtop you get a double helm seat, a wet bar with a Corian counter, and enough L-shaped seating to feed six. BoatTEST later described the 45 as an all-weather cruiser with a mini galley topside and a cockpit settee that seats six, which is a fair summary of how owners use it: the bridge deck is the living room, and the cabin is for sleeping and cooking larger meals.

  • Standard coupe hardtop with motorized sunroof
  • Walk-through windshield to two foredeck sunpads
  • Separate bridge deck air conditioning on most boats
  • Transom trunk and full-beam swim platform, hydraulic platform optional

Cherry, teak and holly below decks

Below, the 45 uses a classic two-stateroom plan. The master is forward with a pocket door for privacy, and the guest stateroom sits aft under the bridge deck with twin berths that slide together into a queen. Yachting described the L-shaped galley with a stand-up fridge and freezer, a two-burner electric range and a microwave, with a teak and holly sole that set off the high-gloss cherry joinery. Standard finish was cherry with Corian counters and four decor choices, and some early boats were ordered with a Ralph Lauren decor package.

Power and Motoryacht measured about seven feet of headroom in the saloon, and two VacuFlush heads with separate showers mean the guest couple does not queue behind the owners in the morning. The saloon settee converts to a berth, so the boat can sleep six, but realistically this is a yacht for two couples or a family with two kids. Cedar-lined lockers in the master and generous hanging space make it a credible two-week cruiser.

Cummins and Volvo V-drives versus IPS600 pods

The 45 Yacht exists in two very different mechanical forms, and you should decide which one you want before you look at a single listing. The first boats were offered with twin 540 hp Cummins QSM 540 diesels as standard power and twin 575 hp Volvo Penta D9 diesels as an option, both on V-drives with ZF gears. The engines sit under the cockpit sole, accessed by an electrically lifted hatch, with about 15 inches between them according to the 2006 test.

BoatTEST lists a 45 Yacht with IPS from the 2007 to 2010 period, and from about 2012 onward the boat was sold with twin 435 hp Volvo Penta IPS600 pod drives. Formula took advantage of the pods to free up mechanical space and lower the overall height, and the joystick makes docking far less dramatic for owners who run their own boat. Yachting quoted a 32 knot top speed for the IPS600 boats.

Which is better? The V-drive boats have more horsepower and simpler, cheaper running gear. The IPS boats are more efficient at cruise, dock better and are newer on average, but pod service, bellows, anodes and the electronic steering system add their own maintenance line. For a buyer who will hire a captain occasionally and fish the shallows, the V-drive is fine. For a couple who dock stern-to in tight marinas, IPS is worth the premium.

What the test numbers say about speed and range

The only full period test with published numbers we could verify is the 2006 Power and Motoryacht trial of a boat with the optional D9 V-drives. It reached 37.5 mph, about 32.6 knots, at 2,500 rpm while burning 58 gallons per hour, and settled into a comfortable cruise of 33.6 mph, about 29 knots, at 2,250 rpm on 43 gph. With 350 gallons of fuel and a 10 percent reserve the magazine calculated a range of 246 statute miles, roughly 214 nautical miles, at that cruise setting.

The hull is a solid fiberglass modified-V with 18 degrees of deadrise aft. The tester found it ate up two-foot bay chop easily and turned very tightly thanks to large rudders, with a strong inboard lean at speed. Bow rise through the 1,500 to 1,750 rpm hump blocked sightlines for shorter drivers until the boat settled at about five degrees of trim. Time to plane was nine seconds on flat water, which is respectable for a yacht of more than 30,000 pounds.

  • Plan on about 1.3 to 1.5 gallons per nautical mile at a fast cruise
  • A 350-gallon tank gives a practical 200-mile run with reserve

A realistic ownership budget

Annual costs for a 45 Yacht usually land between about $38,000 and $72,000, excluding depreciation and loan payments. The big items are a 50-foot slip (remember the overall length is 48 feet 2 inches with pulpit and platform), insurance on a $250,000 to $750,000 hull, diesel service and bottom work. Freshwater Great Lakes boats that are shrink-wrapped and stored indoors each winter add a storage bill but often save on corrosion and gelcoat.

Budget separately for canvas and the aft enclosure, which wears out on a seven to ten year cycle, and for the air conditioning, which works hard on a boat with this much glass. If you buy an IPS boat, set aside money for the Volvo service schedule, which includes pod oil, bellows and anodes. Fuel at a 29 knot cruise runs around 43 gph on the D9 boats, so a summer of 150 engine hours can mean well over 6,000 gallons.

Used market, pricing and the 457 confusion

In 2018 Yachting counted 27 boats on the market, asking from $244,900 for a 2007 to $1.06 million for a 2017. In 2026 the realistic range is about $190,000 for a tired early V-drive boat to the high $700,000s for one of the last IPS boats in excellent condition. Boats with recent Garmin or Raymarine electronics, a Seakeeper retrofit or a new enclosure sell faster than the averages suggest.

Many shoppers also type Formula 457 CCS or 457 CCF into search engines when they mean the 45 Yacht. They are completely different boats. The Formula 457 Center Console Sport and Center Console Fish, which followed the 387 after Formula entered the center console market in 2022, are triple-outboard center consoles with a 45 foot 7 inch hull, a 13 foot 9 inch beam, 700 gallons of fuel and triple Mercury 600 Verados. They share a builder, a size class and a cabin with a head, but not a mission. If you want weekends aboard with two private staterooms, the 45 Yacht is the right Formula. If you want 60 mph runs offshore, look at the 457.

How much does a Formula 45 Yacht cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$190K to $780K
Yearly running costs$38K to $72K

The spread is enormous because this boat sold for twelve-plus model years. Early V-drive boats from 2007 and 2008 sit at the bottom, while late IPS600 hulls with low hours, upgraded Garmin or Raymarine glass and a fresh canvas enclosure command the top. Engine hours, the condition of the Imron hull graphics and whether the boat lived in fresh water around the Great Lakes or in Florida salt move the number more than any option list.

Strengths and weaknesses

What owners like

  • Excellent Formula fit and finish with high-gloss cherry joinery
  • Coupe hardtop with sunroof makes it a true three-season boat
  • Two private staterooms and two heads with separate showers
  • 29 knot cruise from either diesel package
  • Large used inventory makes comparison shopping easy
  • IPS boats are easy to dock with the joystick

What to weigh up

  • Bow rise in the hump hurts sightlines for shorter skippers
  • Tight engine room on the V-drive boats, about 15 inches between engines
  • 350 gallons limits range at fast cruise
  • No flybridge, so the view at the helm is lower than on sedan rivals
  • Older boats need canvas, electronics and AC updates

Our verdict on the Formula 45 Yacht

The Formula 45 Yacht is one of the best values in a used American express cruiser. It was built in large enough numbers that good boats are easy to find, finished to a standard that still looks good after fifteen years, and fast enough at 29 knots to make big lakes and the Gulf Stream feel smaller. Buy the newest IPS boat your budget allows if you dock in tight spaces, or a well-kept V-drive boat if you want the most yacht for the money, and spend the savings on canvas, electronics and a thorough survey.
