Pershing 8X price and what drives it

The first thing most people want to know is the Pershing 8X price. In 2026 a new 8X typically lands between about $9 million and $10.5 million delivered in the US, depending on engines, stabilization and layout. Used boats from the first 2019 hulls through 2023 generally ask from about $4.9 million to $7.9 million. That is a steep first-five-years depreciation curve, typical of high-performance yachts whose buyers want the newest boat, and it is exactly why a well-kept used 8X can be one of the better values in the 80-foot performance class.

What you are paying for is rare. Very few production yachts of this length are built in carbon fiber, and fewer still run in the mid-40-knot range. Pershing says nearly half of its yachts are sold to American owners, and the 8X was designed with US habits in mind, from alfresco aft-deck dining to a three-cabin option that most US buyers prefer.

The X Generation and the carbon fiber hull

The 8X debuted at Boot Dusseldorf in January 2019 as the newest member of Pershing's X Generation, a line that began with the 54-foot 5X in 2016 and grew with the larger 9X. Like the 9X it is built in carbon fiber, which Pershing calls the material that makes the boat lightweight, fast and hyper-performing. The numbers bear that out. Unladen displacement is 57,000 kg (about 125,700 pounds) and laden displacement 67,000 kg (about 147,700 pounds) for an 84-foot yacht with four cabins and crew quarters.

Weight saving runs through the whole boat. Power and Motoryacht reported that all cabinetry and interior components are engineered for minimal weight, with the large one-piece windshield the main exception. That windshield has no center upright, an engineering feat on a boat that runs at these speeds, and it gives the lower helm a sweeping view forward.

A hidden flybridge in the side wing

In profile the 8X looks like an express cruiser. The flybridge stairs are integrated into a sweeping carbon side wing to port, so they vanish from view and arch out over the side deck rather than eating into the cockpit. That is a clear change from the 9X, where the stairs are built into the superstructure, and it gives the 8X a noticeably bigger aft deck for dining.

Fulvio De Simoni, who has designed every Pershing since 1985, shaped the exterior with Ferretti's Strategic Product Committee led by Piero Ferrari and the group's engineers. The upper helm is open to the wind, with three bucket seats on centerline behind a low venturi windscreen, and a pop-up electronics array. The lower helm has three ergonomic helm seats framed in Poltrona Frau leather, a large electric sunroof and pantograph doors to both side decks for docking.

Two MTU 16V engines and Top System surface drives

Power comes from a pair of MTU 16V 2000 diesels on Top System surface drives. The standard M96 version makes 2,435 hp per engine for a claimed 45-knot top speed and 38-knot cruise. The optional M96L makes 2,638 hp per engine, which Pershing rates at 48 knots and a 41-knot cruise, with a range of 310 nautical miles at cruise on 6,200 liters (1,638 gallons) of fuel.

Power and Motoryacht tested an M96L boat off Fort Lauderdale and saw 46.5 knots on the GPS before building seas cut the run short. The test boat had twin Seakeeper 9 gyros, and the tester watched them snap the boat upright in three-foot beam seas when switched back on. Pershing's EasySet system, developed with Top System, automatically adjusts the surface drive trim for load and speed, with manual override when you want it, and a Xenta joystick ties the drives and thrusters together for docking. A DGPS station-keeping function lets the boat hold position while waiting for a bridge or fuel dock.

Three cabins for Americans, four for everyone else

The main deck saloon is open plan, with a C-shaped settee, a TV and, instead of a formal dining table, a bar with sink, refrigerator and ice maker. Dining is meant to happen aft. The galley is below and amidships, reached by its own stairway, and works as a service space next to the two crew cabins rather than an owner's kitchen.

Guest accommodation is reached by a private stairway forward. The full-beam master is amidships, with its head and closet set aft of a forward-facing berth to put space between the owner and the engine room. A VIP sits in the bow, and the fourth cabin is often converted into a media lounge on US boats. A unique Music Hull system, developed with Videoworks, turns the hull into an underwater speaker so swimmers can hear music around the boat.

Running costs, crew and fuel

Plan on roughly $600,000 to $1 million a year to operate an 8X, excluding depreciation. That includes a captain and usually a mate or stew, insurance on a high-value high-speed hull, dockage for an 84-foot yacht, MTU and surface drive service, and fuel. The engines are proven, but 16-cylinder MTUs have serious service intervals and parts costs, and surface drives require more frequent attention than conventional shafts.

Fuel is significant at speed. Pershing's figures imply 1,638 gallons consumed over 310 nm at 41 knots, roughly 5 gallons per nautical mile. At lower speeds the burn drops sharply, and many owners cruise in the low 30s to balance range and comfort. A 10-knot passage setting is possible, but surface drives are not at their best at slow speeds.

What separates a good used 8X from a risky one

The best used 8Xs have full MTU service histories, documented surface drive and propeller maintenance, and records showing the EasySet and Xenta systems updated by Ferretti service. Carbon fiber hulls are very durable, but repairs need specialist work, so a survey by someone experienced with composite performance yachts is non-negotiable. Ask for engine data downloads and oil analysis on both engines.

8X or 9X, choosing between the carbon sisters

Most serious 8X shoppers also look at the 9X. The larger boat is 92 feet overall with a 20 foot 5 inch beam, 9,000 liters of fuel and room for a bigger tender, but it uses the same pair of 2,638 hp MTUs to move a heavier hull, so Pershing rates it at 42 knots rather than 48. The 8X is the sharper driving machine and the more practical owner-operator boat, while the 9X is the better choice for a family that spends nights aboard with a full crew.

Dockage is part of the decision. In many Florida and Northeast marinas an 84-footer still fits slips that a 92-footer does not, and the difference in annual dockage and insurance can exceed $100,000. If you will mostly run day trips to the islands and sleep aboard on weekends, the 8X makes more sense.

Figures come from builder documentation and independent tests where available. Displacement is usually quoted light, so a loaded cruising boat will weigh more. Compare these specs with another model.

How much does a Pershing 8X cost?

New, typical sail-away$9M to $10.5M
Used, typical asking$4.9M to $7.9M
Yearly running costs$600K to $1M

The M96L engine upgrade, twin Seakeeper gyros, the DGPS station-keeping package and the choice of three or four cabins move a new 8X by several hundred thousand dollars. On the used market, engine hours and MTU service records dominate, and boats that have spent time in a professional crewed program with documented surface drive maintenance sell faster and closer to asking.

Strengths and weaknesses

What owners like

  • Mid-40-knot speed in an 84-foot yacht
  • Carbon fiber construction keeps weight down
  • Side-wing stairway frees up the aft deck
  • Integrated joystick, EasySet trim and DGPS station-keeping
  • Garage takes a tender and a PWC
  • Steep early depreciation creates used value

What to weigh up

  • Very high running costs and fuel burn at speed
  • Surface drives are less efficient at slow speeds
  • Galley is a crew space rather than an owner kitchen
  • Carbon repairs require specialist yards

Our verdict on the Pershing 8X

The Pershing 8X is the purest expression of what Pershing does: an 84-foot yacht that runs like a performance boat and looks fast standing still. Carbon fiber, big MTUs and surface drives deliver speed few rivals can touch, and the side-wing stairway and US-friendly layout make it more livable than earlier Pershings. It is expensive to run and loses value quickly in its first years, which is exactly why a well-documented used 8X is the smart way in.
