What the Azimut 43 Fly actually is

The Azimut 43 is a two-cabin flybridge that Azimut built in the second half of the 2000s and into the early 2010s, styled by Stefano Righini with interiors by Carlo Galeazzi. Azimut's 2009 specification gives 12.9 meters (42 feet 4 inches) overall, a hull length of 12.74 meters, a 4.22-meter (13-foot 10-inch) beam, 1.27 meters of draft and 15.2 tonnes at full load, with twin 480 mhp Cummins QSB 5.9 diesels for 33 knots maximum and 29 knots cruise.

YachtBuyer dates a first generation from 2007 to 2012 and a second from 2011 to 2013, and it records a 2006 boat changing hands in 2020, so the earliest hulls carry 2006 model years. In practice the generations look almost identical; what changes is where the boat was built for and what engines it carries. If you are searching for an Azimut 43 Fly for sale, you will mostly see European boats from 2006 to 2010 and a handful of later ones.

Four Azimuts called 43, and which one this page covers

Azimut has used the number on at least four boats, and listings mix them up constantly. This page covers the flybridge. The Azimut 43S is a different boat entirely: a hardtop sport yacht with red hull sides and Volvo IPS pod drives with joystick control, which YachtBuyer dates from 2004 to 2011 with 137 built. The Azimut Magellano 43, launched in 2013, is a semi-displacement cruiser designed to run efficiently at low speed. Azimut's Atlantis 43 is a sport cruiser from the separate Atlantis line.

The fast check is the profile and the drive system. A flybridge with a second helm up top and conventional inboard engines is the 43 Fly. A single-level hardtop boat with IPS is a 43S. A taller, more upright cruiser built around low-speed efficiency is a Magellano.

Reading the spec sheet, 480 hp, 21 degrees and 1,100 liters

Three numbers tell you most of what you need to know. The first is 960 horsepower in total, which is a lot for a boat of about 15 tonnes and explains the 33-knot claim. The second is 21 degrees of deadrise amidships, the figure Azimut publishes for this hull, which suggests a reasonably sea-kindly forefoot for a family flybridge. The third is the fuel tank: 1,100 liters, or about 291 gallons, which is small for the power installed.

Put those together and the 43 is a fast coastal cruiser rather than a long-legged one. Running hard on twin 480 hp engines will empty a 291-gallon tank quickly, so most owners cruise in the mid-20s and plan legs accordingly. Azimut did not publish fuel curves that we could find, and we found no independent sea trial data, so treat any speed quoted in a listing as a claim until you see it on the plotter.

A close relative of the 2005 Azimut 40

Owners of the Azimut 40 that Motor Boat & Yachting tested in 2005 will recognize the numbers. That boat also had a 4.22-meter beam and, according to YachtBuyer, the same 291 gallons of fuel and 132 gallons of water, with twin 380 hp Cummins and a 31-knot top speed. The 43 adds length to the overall figure and, in its main form, 100 hp per side.

Azimut never said in any source we found that the 43 is a renamed or stretched 40, so we will not claim it. But when Azimut listed a European Azimut 43 in 2013, it gave it exactly the 40's engine rating of 380 mhp and the same 31-knot maximum. For a buyer, the practical point is that the 43 inherits the 40's big-boat volume, and that MBY's praise for the 40's beam and practical deck layout is a good guide to what to expect.

Brazil-market 480 hp boats and the 380 hp European 43

Around 2011 and 2012 Azimut's website carried an Azimut 43 page marked for the Brazilian market only, with the full 480 mhp Cummins installation, 33 knots maximum and 29 knots cruise. A year later the European site listed an Azimut 43 among its long-running models with twin 380 mhp Cummins QSB 5.9, 31 knots maximum and 26 knots cruise, on the same 12.9-meter, 4.22-meter beam platform.

By 2014 Azimut was listing a Brazil-market 42br with the same beam, displacement and 480 mhp engines, crediting its hull to Michael Peters. If you see a 42br or 43br advertised in the US, it is part of this family rather than the much older Azimut 42. Imported Brazilian boats can be good value, but check that the electrical system, documentation and warranty history suit a US owner.

Two cabins, a day head and room for six at a pinch

Accommodation follows the two-cabin pattern of Azimut's smaller flybridges: an owner's double forward with an en suite head and a twin cabin with two single berths served by a second head that doubles as the day head. YachtBuyer lists four guests as standard and six with the saloon conversion, which matches Azimut's own four to six berth figure.

The main deck is given over to the saloon, and the flybridge provides an open-air helm with seating, which is where most owners spend their time in summer. Because the boat has a 13-foot 10-inch beam, the saloon and cockpit feel wide for a 42-footer, and that width is the main reason to choose a 43 over a slimmer Azimut 38 or a contemporary Fairline.

Owning a 43 in US waters, draft, fuel and Cummins service

At just over 4 feet of draft, the 43 is comfortable in the Intracoastal Waterway, the Chesapeake and most Bahamas harbors. The Cummins QSB 5.9 is a widely supported engine in the US, which makes routine service and parts straightforward compared with some European engines of the period. Common wear items on these engines are aftercoolers, raw water pumps and exhaust elbows, so ask for records.

Budget roughly $35,000 to $62,000 a year to keep a 43 in good order, excluding fuel and depreciation, with the higher figure for South Florida or Northeast dockage and full-service maintenance. Because the tank is small, a fuel dock stop is part of most weekends at higher speeds.

What an Azimut 43 is worth today

Expect asking prices of roughly $230,000 to $400,000 in 2026. Early 2006 to 2008 boats with original engines and dated electronics sit at the bottom, around the $279,000 that a 2006 boat last asked before it sold in 2020, and late 480 hp boats with refreshed interiors and modern plotters sit at the top. Listings are thin, so be prepared to look at boats in Europe as well as the US.

How much does a Azimut 43 cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$230K to $400K
Yearly running costs$35K to $62K

YachtBuyer records a 2006 Azimut 43 last asking about $279,000 when it sold in late 2020, and that remains a sensible anchor for early boats in good order. Later 480 hp boats from 2010 onward sit higher. Few 43s are listed at any one time, so condition, engine hours and the presence of a generator, hardtop and modern electronics move prices more than the calendar does.

Our verdict on the Azimut 43

The Azimut 43 is a sensible way to get a lot of Italian flybridge into a 43-foot slip, with a wide hull, plenty of power and engines any US yard can service. Its weaknesses are a small fuel tank, the lack of independent test data and a name shared with three other Azimuts, so do your homework on exactly which boat and which engine rating you are buying. Find a 480 hp boat with documented Cummins service and a dry deck, and you will have a fast, roomy coastal cruiser for well under half the price of a new 40-footer.
