The Prestige 520 and the staircase that sells it

Every Prestige since the early flybridge models has been built around one idea: the owner should not share a corridor with the guests. On the Prestige 520 that means a full-beam master suite amidships reached by its own staircase from the main deck, while the VIP and guest cabins forward use a separate companionway. Close the door at the top of your stairs and the master suite is effectively a private apartment.

Boating New Zealand called that separation the feature that sets Prestige apart, and from a broker's chair it is the reason couples who travel with adult children or friends shortlist the 520 over more conventional Italian and British flybridges. It also explains why the model stayed in the Prestige F-Line from its Cannes launch in 2017 until the new F-Line models (the F4.9 debuted in 2024) took over, an unusually long run in a segment where most builders refresh every five years. It now sits among Prestige's prior models.

Garroni's glass house on a 53-foot hull

Prestige handed the styling of the 520 to Garroni Design, the Italian studio behind much of the Prestige range. The brief was to replace the Prestige 500 with something brighter, and the numbers show how far they went: about 50 percent more glazing than the 500, roughly 7 percent more interior volume and a foredeck twice the size thanks to a fuller, snubbed bow.

The side windows in the saloon drop almost to deck level and measure 3 feet 7 inches from top to bottom on the inside, so a seated guest at the dinette sees water, not fiberglass. There are hullside windows in the cabins and even a window in the transom. Headroom is 6 feet 5 inches at the aft end of the saloon by the galley and 6 feet 9 inches over the raised midsection, which matters if you are tall and spend winters aboard.

Hull length is 14.80 meters, so the 16.11 meter (52 foot 10 inch) overall length includes a long swim platform and bow overhang. That is worth knowing when you price a slip, because many US marinas bill on LOA.

An XXL flybridge with a real job to do

Prestige markets the 520's upper deck as an XXL flybridge, and on a boat with a 14-foot 9-inch beam it is unusually deep. There is a helm with companion seating, a wet bar with grill, a large U-shaped dining settee and enough open deck aft for loose furniture or a pair of sun loungers. Most US buyers order the hardtop or bimini, because an unshaded bridge in Florida is a morning-only space.

The foredeck is the other outdoor room. Its sun pad measures about 6 feet at the head, 5 feet 3 inches at the foot and well over 7 feet long, with a pull-up sunshade. Side-deck access from the lower helm is through a door Yachting measured at 21 inches wide and 41 inches tall, which is fine for line handling but tight for a big crew member in foul weather gear.

  • Flybridge wet bar with grill and refrigerator
  • Lower helm door to the starboard side deck
  • Foredeck lounge with pull-up sunshade
  • Hydraulic swim platform optional and highly recommended for tender handling

Three cabins, two heads and the crew or garage question

Below, the plan is three cabins and two heads. The owner's suite gets its own en suite head. The forward VIP has a double berth and shares the second head with the portside guest cabin, whose twin berths slide together into a double.

Aft of the engine room the transom space can be specified as a skipper's cabin or as a tender garage. In the US, where most 52-foot boats are owner-operated, the garage version is usually the better pick for resale. In markets where a paid captain is normal, the crew cabin wins. Boating New Zealand noted that local buyers preferred the garage, and the same logic applies in Florida and the Great Lakes.

Two heads for three cabins is the main weakness of the layout. If you regularly sleep six, the forward and port guests share a bathroom, which is tolerable on a weekend but wearing on a two week cruise.

IPS 600 or IPS 650, and how fast the 520 really goes

Power is always Volvo Penta pods. At launch the only package was IPS 600 using 435 hp D6 diesels, and Prestige later listed IPS 650 using 480 hp D6s alongside it. Prestige quotes a 22-knot cruise and a 26-knot top speed, which is conservative.

Yachting saw more than 27 knots on a lightly loaded IPS 600 test boat, against a factory figure of 25.6 knots. Boating New Zealand ran an IPS 650 boat to 28 knots at 3,500 rpm against the tide and expected 30 knots at the 3,700 rpm maximum. Semi-planing happens around 12 to 13 knots and the hull settles fully on plane at 18 to 19 knots, so the useful cruise band is 18 to 24 knots.

Range with 1,300 liters (343 gallons) of fuel is the honest limitation. Prestige's own figures give about 500 nautical miles at 8 knots, roughly 300 at 10 knots and about 175 at 18 knots. That is fine for the Bahamas from South Florida or a Chesapeake to Long Island run with fuel stops, but it is not a long range cruiser, and owners planning the Great Loop should budget for frequent fueling at planing speed.

At idle the boat slides along at about 3.5 knots on 600 rpm while burning a little more than two-thirds of a gallon per hour, which makes no-wake zones painless. The extra 40 hp per side of the IPS 650 mainly helps when the boat is loaded with full tanks, a tender and a gyro, and it is the engine package to buy on a used boat.

Gyro, generator and the options that matter at resale

A Seakeeper gyro was a $96,290 option on early US boats, and Prestige told Yachting that 80 percent of owners ordered one. Boats without one are noticeably harder to sell, because the 520's tall profile and relatively light 15,579 kg (34,346 lb) displacement mean it rolls at anchor in a beam swell.

Other items that move resale value are the IPS joystick with dynamic positioning, a hydraulic platform, air conditioning sized for southern waters, upgraded Garmin or Raymarine electronics and a full teak package on the cockpit, foredeck and flybridge.

What a Prestige 520 costs to keep in the US

The builder's range figure of 175 miles at 18 knots from 343 gallons implies a combined burn in the mid 30s of gallons per hour on plane, more at a 22-knot cruise. Fuel is therefore a meaningful line in the budget for owners who run fast, and much smaller for those who cruise at 8 to 10 knots.

Fixed costs for a boat of this size usually land between $65,000 and $110,000 a year: a 55-foot slip, insurance, two IPS services, generator and gyro maintenance, bottom paint, canvas and electronics updates. IPS pods need scheduled service of the drive oil, anodes and bellows, and the Volvo Penta network in the US is broad, which keeps parts and labor predictable.

Prestige 520 price history and how values hold

The Prestige 520's long production run creates an unusually clear depreciation curve. A $970,000 base boat in 2017 typically left the dealer at around $1.2 million once options were added. Those 2018 boats now ask roughly $700,000 to $950,000, which is solid retention for a European flybridge.

Recent model years are close to their original invoice. We estimate 2023 and 2024 boats at about $1.1 million to $1.55 million, and late 2025 boats with IPS 650s were still appearing in dealer inventory as the model was retired. Expect asking prices for comparable boats to narrow by 5 to 10 percent in negotiation.

Because the design barely changed over its run, a well kept 2019 or 2020 boat delivers most of the experience of a late one for several hundred thousand dollars less. That is the sweet spot we would shop.

How much does a Prestige 520 cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$690K to $1.55M
Yearly running costs$65K to $110K

When the 520 reached the US its base price was $970,000, and Yachting reported that the average buyer added about 25 percent in options, with a Seakeeper NG6 alone listed at $96,290. Late boats with IPS 650s, a gyro, teak decks and the dynamic positioning package were the most expensive new, and the 520 is now listed among Prestige's prior models, so the used market sets values. They depend heavily on whether the boat has a stabilizer, the IPS 650 upgrade and a crew cabin versus the tender garage.

Our verdict on the Prestige 520

The Prestige 520 is not the fastest or the longest-legged 52-foot flybridge, but it solves the problem most couples actually have: how to bring guests without giving up privacy. The separate staircase to the owner's suite, the glass-walled saloon and the oversized flybridge make it an easy boat to live on, and IPS joystick control makes it easy to run without crew. Buy one with IPS 650s and a Seakeeper, ideally a 2019 to 2021 boat, and you get almost everything a late 520 offers at a substantial discount.
