The Carver 444 is a 396 with a back porch

The quickest way to understand the Carver 444 Cockpit Motor Yacht is HMY's description: it is basically a Carver 396 Motor Yacht with a cockpit and extra fuel. Carver built it in Pulaski, Wisconsin from 2001 to 2006, and HMY calls it a huge sales success, adding that no other cockpit yacht its size matched the 444 for interior space and comfort, and none had a larger cockpit.

That combination is the whole appeal. Owners get the high-volume interior that made the 396 popular, plus a proper cockpit at water level for boarding, swimming, fishing off the stern and handling lines, and a fuel capacity of 404 gallons that suits longer coastal runs and the Great Loop.

Most people searching carver 444 for sale are looking at boats from 2001 to 2006. A few listings use 2007 or other model years, so confirm the hull identification number and whether the boat has the standard or the 2004-on Extended Salon interior.

Carver's 2001 numbers

Carver's 2001 specification sheet gives the 444 an overall length of 46 feet 6 inches with the platform, a 13-foot 11-inch beam, a 42-inch draft and an 18-foot bridge clearance with the arch. Weight with fuel and water is listed at 33,860 pounds. Tankage is 404 gallons of fuel, 90 gallons of water and 72 gallons of waste. Cabin headroom is 6 feet 10 inches, and the boat sleeps four, or six with optional convertible furniture. Power was twin diesel inboards only.

The beam is the same 13 feet 11 inches as the 396, which tells you where the extra length went: the cockpit and the stern, not the salon. An 18-foot clearance clears the roughly 19-foot fixed bridges that set the limit on the Great Loop's Chicago route, but the lower bridges of the Erie Canal mean lowering the arch, removing antennas or choosing another route.

A full-beam salon behind eye-level side decks

Carver's design trick was to raise the side decks to roughly eye level so the cabin could run the full width of the hull. Step inside and the result surprises people: HMY describes an enormous full-beam interior with panoramic views and nearly seven feet of headroom, with salon dimensions of a much larger boat. A mid-level galley sits forward to port, and the salon has an extended starboard lounge with double incliners in UltraLeather and a TV and VCR aft to port on early boats.

Yachting's George Sass Jr. liked the frameless opening side windows, the corner entertainment center visible from either settee and the eye-level Nova-Kool refrigerator with a freezer below, three-burner stove and convection microwave. He would have liked a double sink and more counter space. Cherry with a high-gloss finish runs throughout.

Two queens, a split forward head and a door to the cockpit

Both staterooms have queen berths. Forward, the guest cabin has an island queen, a cedar-lined hanging locker, an overhead hatch and two opening ports. To save space its head is split, with the shower stall to port and the toilet compartment to starboard. The salon and galley sit between the two cabins, which gives each couple real privacy.

Aft, the master has a queen with an innerspring mattress, two hanging lockers, nightstands and drawers, and its own head with a separate shower stall. HMY calls the master smallish, but it has a feature most aft-cabin boats lack: a sliding glass door straight into the cockpit. Sass found that private exit useful on a similar boat for slipping out for an early swim without waking the guests.

Cockpit, aft deck and flybridge

The cockpit comes with a telescoping ladder, an optional shower, courtesy lights, storage, tender cleats and an accessible shore-power connection. Above it, the aft deck is covered by a hardtop with wing doors and an electronics arch, and HMY rightly notes it is on the small side because the cockpit took the space. Enclosed with a table and chairs, Yachting thought it would rival most shoreside sunrooms.

Topside, the helm is forward on a spacious flybridge with a pedestal seat that swivels toward an L-shaped lounge for five or six and a wet bar with optional ice maker. Side decks are protected by a high stainless rail, and there are five cleats on each side deck, each bolted through glassed-in aluminum backing plates rather than plywood.

Twin 370s and what the sea trial showed

Sources agree on twin 370 hp diesels but differ on the brand. Yachting's test boat off West Palm Beach had 370 hp Cummins engines, while HMY's guide lists 370 hp Volvo diesels. Treat both as possible and confirm what is in the boat you are looking at.

Yachting recorded a cruising speed in the low 20-knot range and a top speed of 25.9 knots with full tanks, with helm noise never above 78 decibels. HMY quotes an 18-knot cruise and a top speed in the low 20s for the Volvo version. Plan on a real-world cruise around 18 to 20 knots on a loaded boat with growth on the bottom, and slower trawler speeds when you want range.

Engine room access is through the salon sole. Sass found most systems easy to service, though the Racor filters sit outboard and forward of the engines, and he praised the coded, tinned-copper wiring harnesses.

The 2004 Extended Salon floorplan

In 2004 Carver added an optional Extended Salon floorplan with a full-size dinette, an enlarged galley and a redesigned forward stateroom. If you entertain aboard or plan to live on the boat for long stretches, these later boats are the ones to target, and they usually ask more than standard-plan 444s of the same year.

Check the layout in person or with a floor plan rather than relying on a listing description, since brokers do not always distinguish the two.

Buying a 444 in 2026

At 20 to 25 years old, the 444 is a mature boat with a strong owner base. The solid fiberglass bottom avoids the risk of wet core around through-hulls, but the hull sides and deck are cored, so a surveyor should moisture-test around hardware, the hardtop, the arch mounts and the cockpit. Frameless windows on boats of this era often need resealing.

Budget roughly $22,000 to $42,000 a year for slip, insurance, haul-out, diesel and generator service, canvas and electronics upkeep, plus fuel. A 444 makes most sense for couples who want a two-stateroom motor yacht with a usable cockpit, cruise mostly with one other couple, and want more fuel capacity than the 396 offers.

How much does a Carver 444 Cockpit Motor Yacht cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$130K to $235K
Yearly running costs$22K to $42K

These are our estimates; the major listing portals blocked access during research, so we could not anchor them to specific current listings. Age, engine hours, Extended Salon versus standard plan, enclosure and electronics drive the spread. Freshwater boats from the Great Lakes with heated storage history usually ask more than comparable saltwater boats.

Our verdict on the Carver 444 Cockpit Motor Yacht

The Carver 444 Cockpit Motor Yacht took the 396's remarkable interior volume and fixed its biggest omission by adding a real cockpit and more fuel. The result is a two-queen motor yacht that lives large inside, gives owners water-level access aft and a private door from the master, and cruises at a sensible 18 to 22 knots on twin 370 hp diesels. The aft deck shrank to make it happen, and any example today deserves a thorough survey, but a well-kept 444, especially an Extended Salon model, is one of the most practical used motor yachts in its size range.
