A 21-meter Ferretti from the brand's first golden era
The Ferretti 680 belongs to the range Ferretti sold at the start of the 2000s, when the yard's lineup ran 430, 460, 480, 500, 530, 590, 620, 680, 730, 760, 810 and 880. Ferretti's own copy from 2005 described the 680 as long, low and aggressive, with state-of-the-art design and a unique combination of generous power and easy handling. It was the big flybridge just below the 73-foot 730 and the larger crewed yachts.
It was also a success. When Ferretti introduced the 681 that replaced it, its website described the new boat as a reinterpretation of the glorious 680, built in 68 examples. That production run means there is still a steady trickle of 680s on the brokerage market, mostly in the Mediterranean, with some in Florida and the Northeast.
The 68, the 680 and the 681
Three names circulate for what is essentially one hull family. Brokers list late-1990s and early-2000s boats as the Ferretti 68, with the same 21.20-meter length, 5.63-meter beam and 1.72-meter draft that Ferretti published for the 680, so treat a Ferretti 68 listing as an early boat of the same design and check its engines and year. Ferretti's 2004 data sheet uses the 680 name.
The 681 followed in the mid-2000s on the same length, beam and waterline, with a restyled profile, an extended window line, an open-view window in the master and a redesigned interior in teak. It also moved to common-rail MAN V12s of 1,224 or 1,360 hp. If you want a later interior and more modern engines, the 681 is the step up; if you want the lowest entry price into a 70-foot Ferretti, a 680 is the place to look.
What Ferretti's 2004 data sheet says
Ferretti's published figures for the 680 give an overall length of 21.2 meters (69 feet 6 inches), a hull length of 20.63 meters, a laden waterline of 17.8 meters (58 feet 5 inches), an 18-foot 6-inch beam and 5 feet 8 inches of draft under the propellers fully laden. Displacement is 39 tonnes unladen and 45 tonnes laden, about 99,000 pounds, and the boat is rated for 20 people. Fuel capacity is 4,000 liters (1,057 gallons) and water 1,000 liters (264 gallons). Height from keel to the top of the roll bar is 18 feet 9 inches, with a minimum transport height of 16 feet 2 inches.
The hull is a warped-plane form with spray rails and 12 degrees of deadrise. That is a moderate figure for a 70-footer: it gives efficient running and good load-carrying, but it will slam in a short head sea if you keep the throttles down. Ferretti noted that every extra 1.7 tonnes aboard costs about one knot of top speed.
- Standard power: twin MAN D2842 LE406 V12, 1,200 hp each at 2,300 rpm
- Option: twin MAN V12 of 1,300 hp
- Predicted 33.5 knots maximum and 30 knots cruise with the 1,200s
- Predicted range 285 nm at full speed and 310 nm at cruise (1,200 hp); 270 and 305 nm with the 1,300s
Four cabins, a crew cabin and a big flybridge
Like most Ferrettis of its generation, the 680 puts a full-beam master amidships, a VIP forward and two further guest cabins between, with crew quarters aft of the engine room. European listings describe four guest cabins and three heads, and some boats have converted the arrangement to three cabins with a larger owner's space. Ferretti interiors of this period typically used heavily lacquered cherry and darker finishes; the yard moved to the matte teak and oak look with the 681 and 731 in the mid-2000s.
On deck, expect a cockpit with a table, an aft swim platform with a tender, a long flybridge with helm, dinette, wet bar and sun pads, and a foredeck sun pad. Many surviving boats carry later additions such as hardtops, stern thrusters and watermakers.
Speed, fuel and what owners report
No independent American magazine test of the 680 is available online, so treat Ferretti's predictions as the best guide. Owner and broker listings consistently quote 26 to 27 knots cruise and 31 to 33 knots top for 1,200 hp boats, and one Italian listing quotes about 350 liters per hour, roughly 92 gallons per hour, at a 26-knot cruise. Range at cruise is a little over 300 nautical miles.
Those numbers mean a 70-footer that can still cover 150 miles in an afternoon, with the fuel bill to match. Plan on about $400 or more per engine hour at current US diesel prices when running fast, and much less at 10 to 12 knots, where these hulls are comfortable for long coastal passages.
Buying a 20-plus-year-old Ferretti
The MAN D2842 is a robust, widely supported V12, but at this age many engines have between 2,000 and 3,000 hours, and the survey should cover aftercoolers, turbochargers, exhaust elbows and mounts. Generators, air conditioning chillers and the hydraulic steering are other common cost centers. Ask for documentation of any major engine service and check whether the boat has been repowered.
Asking prices in 2026 run from roughly $400,000 to $650,000. Annual costs for an owner-operated 680 are $120,000 to $220,000 including dockage, insurance, maintenance and a part-time captain, before any refit. The best buys are boats that have already had their electronics, upholstery and soft goods renewed.

Figures come from builder documentation and independent tests where available. Displacement is usually quoted light, so a loaded cruising boat will weigh more. Compare these specs with another model.
How much does a Ferretti 680 cost?
European listings for 2001 and 2002 Ferretti 680s currently ask roughly 395,000 to 550,000 euros, about $430,000 to $600,000. At more than 20 years old, value depends almost entirely on engine hours and rebuild history, generator and air conditioning condition, teak and upholstery, and whether the electronics have been modernized. US-lying boats with American electrical conversions bring a premium over Mediterranean boats that would need importing.

Our verdict on the Ferretti 680
The Ferretti 680 is a fast, solidly engineered 70-footer that now costs about what a new 40-foot cruiser does. That makes it tempting, but the purchase price is the small number: engines, generators, air conditioning, electronics and soft goods will all need attention on a boat of this age. Choose a well-documented boat with a recent major service, and it will still deliver the big-boat Ferretti experience for a fraction of newer prices.
