Two very different 50 Azimut yachts
Ask a broker about a 50 Azimut yacht and you may get either of two boats. The first Azimut 50 arrived in 2002 with a new hull and mirrored side windows, and YachtBuyer credits it with 227 hulls by 2010. The second, covered in this guide, was launched in 2014 as the Azimut 50 Flybridge, replaced the Azimut 48, and was later sold as the 50 Fly. MBY reported more than 120 delivered by the time of its used-boat review.
The two share a name and little else. The 2014 boat is taller, beamier and roomier, with a full-beam master amidships, a much bigger flybridge and Volvo D11 power. The older boat is covered in its own section below. If a listing says Azimut 50 with Caterpillar C12s and a 2000s model year, it is the first generation.
A scaled-down Azimut 80
Azimut's 80 was selling as fast as the factory could build it, so the designers set out to shrink its best ideas into a 50-footer. Stefano Righini kept the one-piece mirrored saloon windows, the signature fin, the walk-through seating at the bow and three vertical hull windows on each side of the owner's cabin. Carlo Galeazzi did the interior, and MBY noted that Azimut tooled an entirely new hull instead of reusing the 48's.
That hull is the work of Pierluigi Ausonio, resin infused to save weight and add stiffness, with a 12-degree deadrise aft. Dave Marsh of MBY expected the tall, bulky 50 to handle like an SUV and was surprised: he called the steering as perfectly weighted as you could wish for on a flybridge cruiser and said the boat never shimmied crossing a 57-foot photo boat's wake. Alan Harper of PMY called it a brilliantly responsive driver's boat.
A flybridge bigger than many living rooms
The flybridge is the 50's party piece. Azimut quoted about 200 square feet, and MBY's preview put it at 17.5 square meters, one of the largest in the class. It runs back to the stern, shading the cockpit, and has a single helm to port, a C-shaped settee, a wet bar with grill and fridge, sunpads, and fixed seating aft where many builders leave empty space. An optional T-top with a manual sliding sunroof shades most of it.
The helm's position matters for docking: from the port side you can see down the flybridge stairway to the stern. Below, the cockpit has a U-shaped six-seat settee around a teak table, and the foredeck carries a separate sofa and sunbed. Side decks are deep and well protected, which MBY rated among the safest it had seen on this type of boat.
Galley down or galley up, the 2017 facelift
Early boats put the galley on the lower deck, which left room on the main deck for a raised dinette opposite the helm. MBY's first test criticized the galley's limited counter space and storage. In 2017 Azimut gave the 50 a major update: the galley moved up to the main deck near the cockpit doors, the dinette by the helm was removed, and the space below became storage, often fitted with a freezer and washer-dryer.
Outside, the facelift removed the fiberglass spear molding that broke up the saloon window line, giving a cleaner profile. Volvo D11-725 engines replaced the 670 hp version, and late boats from hull 796 switched to 650 hp Caterpillar C8.7s. When comparing listings, these three engine generations and the two galley layouts are the main things to establish.
- 2014 to 2017: galley down, raised dinette, Volvo D11-670
- 2017 facelift: galley up, cleaner windows, Volvo D11-725
- Hull 796 onward: Caterpillar C8.7 650 hp
Below decks, a master that rivals bigger boats
The full-beam master sits deep in the hull amidships with big windows, a low-level king bed, a roomy head and a slide-out vanity to port. PMY measured 6 ft 4 in of headroom where it matters, and MBY noted standing headroom almost all the way around the bed. Both beds in the master and VIP lift on gas struts for storage.
The forward VIP is smaller but comfortable, with its own door into a head that also serves as the day head. The third cabin has bunks that are full length but not full width, with 6 ft 7 in of headroom at the entrance. It is the one cabin where the 50 shows its size, and some owners specify a two-cabin layout. An optional crew cabin under the cockpit sofa is short on headroom but has a good berth, and on many U.S. boats it serves as a lazarette.
PMY's numbers, 32.3 knots and a wide cruising band
PMY tested a D11-670 boat in 1 to 2 foot seas with 185 gallons of fuel, 145 gallons of water and seven people. It reached 32.3 knots at 2,450 rpm burning 69.7 gallons an hour, beating Azimut's own prediction. At 2,100 rpm it cruised at 28.5 knots on 54.4 gallons an hour with a calculated range of 272 nautical miles, and the boat planed at about 16 knots with a little trim tab. MBY's own test recorded 32.2 knots.
The fuel curve is flat between 20 and 28.5 knots, where range barely changes, so you can cruise in the mid-20s without a penalty. MBY's used report gives 255 nautical miles at 26 knots with a 20 percent reserve. Sound levels were moderate, peaking at 78 dB(A) at full speed.
Engine room, platform and tender
With the generator aft, the engine room is tightly packed but well organized. The engines sit flat on V-drives with good space between them, which helps routine service. There is no tender garage. Instead, the standard hydraulic swim platform lifts tenders up to 10 ft 6 in long and 770 pounds.
A Seakeeper gyro was optional, and many U.S. boats have one. One British owner told MBY that adding a Seakeeper changed how his family used the boat, letting them cruise slowly in comfort. On a used boat, a gyro and joystick control add real value.
The 2002 to 2010 Azimut 50
The first Azimut 50 was a different design, launched in 2002 according to Azimut's heritage page, with a new hull, mirrored side windows and a saloon with two facing sofas and a multi-purpose table. PMY tested a two-cabin boat in 2004: 52 ft 6 in overall, a 15 ft 5 in beam, 475 gallons of fuel and twin 660 hp Caterpillar C12s, with 500 hp C9s optional. It topped out at about 37 mph, roughly 32 knots, and cost $1,014,675 as tested.
That boat put the owner's cabin forward, the guest cabin under the helm and a large galley on the lower deck, with a three-cabin option that shrank the galley. PMY liked the layout and storage but found it rolly and wet in a steep chop when lightly loaded. Today these boats ask about $290,000 to $460,000 in the U.S. and €259,000 to €390,000 in Europe.
What a 2014-generation 50 costs now
U.S. listings in 2026 show a wide spread. 2015 boats ask $699,000 to $779,900, 2016 boats $769,000 to $799,500, 2017 boats $669,000 to $890,000, 2018 boats $895,000 to $975,000 and 2020 boats $938,500 to $999,750. 2021 boats sit around $1,050,000, and 2023 and 2024 boats ask about $1.1 to $1.3 million. A nearly new 2025 boat with Caterpillar power was listed at $2,099,000, well above the rest of the market.
Running costs are typical for a 50-foot twin-diesel flybridge: plan on $60,000 to $120,000 a year in the U.S. for slip, insurance, engine and generator service, bottom work, Seakeeper service and some crew time.

How much does a Azimut 50 Fly cost?
PMY's 2015 test boat was about $1,445,000 as tested, and the U.K. starting price was £995,000 before VAT. Yachting counted 12 boats for sale at $798,000 to $1,399,000, and current U.S. asks for identified 50 Flys run from about $669,000 for a 2017 boat to about $1.3 million for 2023 and 2024 boats. Facelifted post-2017 boats with the galley up, D11-725 engines and a Seakeeper sell at a clear premium.

Our verdict on the Azimut 50 Fly
The Azimut 50 Fly is the rare family flybridge that is genuinely fun to drive. PMY and MBY both praised its handling, it reaches 32 knots, and its flybridge would not look out of place on a much larger yacht. The third cabin is small and the early galley-down layout is a compromise, but the 2017 facelift fixed most of the weak points. Buy a post-facelift boat with D11-725s, a Seakeeper and documented service, and you have one of the best all-round 50-footers of its decade.
