What the D in Parker 2520 XLD actually buys you

Search for the Parker 2520 and you will find two boats that look nearly identical from the dock: the 2520 XL Sport Cabin and the 2520 XLD Sport Cabin. Both are 25 feet 4 inches long with a 9-foot 6-inch beam, and Parker listed them side by side from at least the 2007 model year through 2019. The difference is underneath.

Parker's 2017 specifications show the XL with 16 degrees of transom deadrise, 5,300 pounds dry, 156 gallons of fuel and a 450 hp maximum. The XLD carries 21 degrees of deadrise, 5,800 pounds, 179 gallons and up to 500 hp. In other words, the XLD is the deeper, heavier, longer-range offshore version, and the flatter XL should be steadier at rest and need less power. By 2024 only the XLD remained in Parker's lineup.

Beaufort workboat DNA

Beaufort, North Carolina, sits beside the stretch of ocean known as the Graveyard of the Atlantic, and Parker is a product of the town's long boatbuilding tradition. The family's start in the business reaches back to the late 1960s, and Boating credits Linwood Parker's 25-foot Sou'wester workboat, early in the following decade, as the first production Parker. Overbuilt and underpriced was the family's own shorthand for decades, and the company still counts commercial, government and recreational buyers among its customers.

In 2019 Linwood and Trudy Parker sold the business to Correct Craft, which renamed it Parker Offshore, expanded the Beaufort plant and kept the sport cabins in production. Under the new owner the 2520 XLD gained standard Seakeeper Ride and electronics packages before its 2026 renaming as the 257 Explorer.

Pilothouse, cabin and the plumbed head

Compared with the 23-foot 2320, the 2520 XLD is a real jump in usable space. The wheelhouse is close to 5 feet fore and aft, nearly 7 feet across, and offers about 6 feet 4 inches of headroom, so most adults can stand upright. Both windshield panels open, the sliding side glass is screened, and the helm and passenger each get a ladder-back seat with a footrest, with storage-base companion seating behind them.

Behind a lockable door and companionway hatch, the bow cabin holds a pair of twin bunks that together span roughly 76 by 64 inches, under a little less than 4 feet of headroom, lit by portlights and a deck hatch. By the 2014 model year a plumbed electric toilet with macerator and holding tank was standard here, something the smaller 2320 never offered as standard, and that alone changes how a family or a mixed crew can use the boat. Buyers could also order a pilothouse galley unit with a sink, 12-volt fridge and stove.

Cockpit and fishing layout

Aft of the house, the self-draining cockpit gives roughly 9 feet of length, a little over 7 feet of width and about two feet of depth to the gunwale. The transom is solid, with the outboards hung on a bracket that doubles as a swim step with a boarding ladder, and a walk-through door, an insulated fish box and a baitwell are built in. Later boats arrived with more fishing gear as standard: a pair of macerated in-sole fish boxes aft, a 35-gallon well, a six-rod rocket launcher, four rod holders in the gunwales and padded coaming bolsters.

Options over the years included an anchor windlass, a second station in a freestanding or bulkhead console or in an aluminum tower, SeaStar power-assisted steering, a bow thruster, Seaspension seats and a folding cockpit lounge. A 2520 XLD with a tower and second station makes a capable offshore trolling boat for a two- or three-person crew.

Single versus twin outboards

The 2520 XLD is rated for 500 hp, so it can run a single big outboard or a pair of mid-size engines. In 2025 Parker offered a single Yamaha F300 or F350, or twin F150s or F200s. In 2017 the published power packages included the Yamaha F200 XB and F300 UCA.

A single F300 or F350 is cheaper to buy, maintain and eventually repower, and leaves more cockpit room. Twins give redundancy for offshore runs and resale appeal in the Northeast and Pacific Northwest. Parker's 2027 pricing for the 257 Explorer shows the gap: $176,897 with a single F300 against $214,777 with twin F200s. We found no published speed and fuel test specific to the 2520 XLD, so ask sellers for their own data and test with your typical load.

Seakeeper Ride and the 257 Explorer

By 2025 Parker fitted the 2520 XLD with a Seakeeper Ride 450 system as standard, replacing conventional trim tabs with active blades that reduce roll and pitch underway. For 2026 and 2027 the boat appears as the 257 Explorer, with the same 25-foot 4-inch length, 179-gallon tank and 500 hp rating, though Parker now publishes a 9-foot 7-inch beam, 6,480-pound dry weight and 19-degree deadrise. We found no Parker statement on whether the hull itself changed.

Seakeeper's own sea trial of a 257 Explorer with twin Yamaha 250s off Morehead City in April 2025 recorded 41 percent roll reduction and 43 percent pitch reduction at 31 mph in two-foot beam seas. For buyers comparing a late 2520 XLD with an older one, Seakeeper Ride is the most significant equipment difference.

Ownership and the used market

The 9-foot 6-inch beam is over the legal trailering width in most states, so expect to need a permit if you tow, and many owners keep these boats on a lift or in a dry-stack barn instead. Plan on something like $7,000 to $15,000 annually for storage, coverage, engine maintenance and fuel, and more with a pair of outboards.

Older hulls hold up well, and condition of the engines, pilothouse windows and cockpit sole matter more than year. Parker sells through a dealer network of more than 50 locations, which helps with parts and service when buying used far from North Carolina.

How much does a Parker 2520 XLD Sport Cabin cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$50K to $200K
Yearly running costs$7K to $15K

Parker's 2025 site listed the 2520 XLD SC at $204,062 MSRP, with Seakeeper Ride and a Garmin package standard. Its successor, the 2027 257 Explorer, lists from $176,897 with a single Yamaha F300 to $249,803 with twin F250s. Twin-engine boats and those with second stations or towers bring more on resale, and repowered older hulls often trade at a discount to their real usefulness.

Our verdict on the Parker 2520 XLD Sport Cabin

The Parker 2520 XLD Sport Cabin is the sweet spot of Parker's pilothouse range: big enough for a plumbed head, standing headroom and serious fuel, small enough to run with one engine. The 21-degree XLD hull is the one to buy over the older XL if you fish offshore, and late boats with Seakeeper Ride are noticeably more comfortable. It will not win a beauty contest or a speed run, but as a dry, durable, year-round fishing boat it is very hard to fault.
