The Freeman 47 is a 47-foot quad-outboard center console catamaran with 1,025 gallons of fuel, a 13-foot-2 beam and a 45 mph cruise at about 0.78 mpg. It sits at the top of the production Freeman range.

Best for
  • Canyon and offshore tournament teams
  • Bahamas and long-range fishing trips
  • Owners stepping up from a 42 Freeman
  • Captains who fish in rough water often

Why Freeman stretched the 42 into a 47

For years the 42LR was the biggest production boat Freeman Boatworks offered, and its owners kept asking for the same three things: more fuel, more beam and a console you could actually spend time inside. The Freeman 47, released in 2020, is the answer. It adds five feet of length, more than a foot of beam and 225 gallons of fuel over the 42, and it moved Freeman into the price bracket of the large luxury center consoles without abandoning the fishing-first approach that built the brand.

The numbers on the Freeman spec sheet tell the story. The 47 measures 47 feet 2 inches overall with a 13-foot-2 beam, weighs about 22,500 lb dry with engines and roughly 31,500 lb ready to fish, and carries 1,025 gallons of fuel and 88 gallons of fresh water. Maximum power is 1,800 hp, which means four 450 hp class outboards on the transom.

This is still a center console, not an express cruiser. The 47 is built for crews who run very long distances to fish, and who want a stable, roomy platform when they get there.

A 13-foot-2 catamaran that weighs like a sportfisherman

Billy Freeman's design approach on the 47 follows his earlier boats: symmetrical sponsons with high freeboard and considerable flare, tuned so the boat does not bow steer in a following sea. Freeman has said he designs for the weight swing between light and loaded, and on a 47 that swing is enormous. Power and Motoryacht reported the boat at about 20,000 lb dry and up to 26,000 lb fully loaded in early form, and Freeman's current ready-to-fish figure is 31,500 lb once the extra equipment of a modern build is aboard.

That mass is part of the ride. A heavy catamaran with a wide tunnel pushes through a short chop instead of skipping across it, and the 47 holds speed in head seas that would force a 40-foot monohull to throttle back. In a beam sea at rest it rolls less than a deep-V, though like every cat it can feel quick and stiff as it rights itself.

Draft is only about 24 inches with the engines trimmed, so the 47 still crosses shallow passes and Bahamas banks that larger inboard boats avoid.

1,025 gallons, 0.78 mpg and what range looks like

Freeman quotes a typical cruise of 45 mph at 0.78 mpg. That works out to roughly 58 gallons per hour for all four engines. With a 10 percent reserve held back, 1,025 gallons gives a theoretical range around 720 statute miles at that pace, about 625 nautical miles.

In practice, owners use that capacity to fish without compromise. A Mid-Atlantic crew can run to the canyons, troll all day, and run home without touching the reserve. A South Florida boat can cross to the Bahamas, fish the islands for several days and come back on one fill. Range is the main reason buyers step up from the 42, and the main reason the 47 holds its value.

Quad 450R Mercurys, other power and Freeman 47 top speed

Most 47s carry four outboards. Early boats were shown with quad Mercury Racing 450R engines, and Power and Motoryacht reported a top end of more than 70 knots with that package. In a later visit the magazine ran a 47 with four 400 hp Mercurys at more than 60 knots on flat water while returning about a mile per gallon, and at 35 knots out through a choppy harbor entrance. Treat any single top speed figure carefully, because it depends heavily on load, props and conditions; a 47 with full tanks, a crew of six and a tower will be well short of a light-load test number.

Those are magazine runs on lightly loaded boats. Freeman's own figure of a 45 mph cruise at 0.78 mpg is a better guide to what a fueled, crewed boat does every day than any wide-open number.

Yamaha and Mercury four-strokes in the 400 to 450 hp class are both seen on the 47. Buyers who keep the boat in remote places often favor whichever brand has the strongest dealer presence where they fish, since a quad installation multiplies the importance of service access.

  • Maximum power 1,800 hp
  • Typical cruise 45 mph at 0.78 mpg per Freeman
  • Top speed varies widely with load; light boats on quad 450Rs have run above 70 knots
  • Quad installation gives get-home redundancy far offshore

Inside the console, the Freeman 47 interior question

Freeman 47 interior is one of the most searched topics on this boat, and the honest answer is that it depends on the build sheet. Freeman works build to order, so the walk-in console can be finished as a practical head and storage compartment or fitted with more comfort, including a plumbed electric head, air conditioning and room to rest out of the weather. It is not a full cabin with a galley like a Yellowfin 42 or a Contender 39FA.

For 2026 Freeman revised the console with larger fiberglass doors, a five-drawer cabinet for storage and better sight lines from the helm, and the helm can now take two 27 inch Garmin screens, which Freeman says was not possible before. The changes respond directly to owner feedback that earlier consoles were hard to get in and out of with gear in hand.

Deck plan for tuna, swordfish and canyon trips

Forward insulated boxes total about 500 quarts, transom boxes another 100 quarts, and livewells with pumpout hold 140 gallons. Freeman also lists extra-large dry storage boxes midship and premium tackle storage with dual drink coolers at the leaning post.

The option list reads like a tournament wish list: tuna tubes, a center rigger for spreading five or more lines on the troll, a dive door, a fiberglass hardtop with integrated rod holders and capability for dual 27 inch Garmin screens. Standard equipment includes the deluxe extended T-top, a glass windshield with wiper, flush-mount rod holders, underwater LEDs and a Freeman sound system.

The width of a 13-foot-2 cat carried all the way aft makes the 47 cockpit genuinely large. Four anglers can fight fish in the corners and center without crossing lines, and stand-up tuna fights are easier on a platform that does not roll heavily as the fish circles.

What changed for the 2026 model year

Freeman's 2026 enhancements focus on the helm and the console. The captain gets improved visibility forward, the hardtop is wider for better weather protection, the console doors are larger, the cabinet gains five drawers, and rod holders are integrated into the design more cleanly.

None of this changes the hull, which is good news for used buyers. A 2020 boat runs the same as a 2026 boat; you simply give up some ergonomics and shade. If the hardtop width matters to you because you fish in hot climates, it is worth paying up for a 2026 or later boat.

Freeman 47 cost, from build slot to annual bills

Expect a new Freeman 47 to cost roughly $1.65 million to $2.1 million depending on engines and equipment. Used boats from the first production years list from about $1.05 million, and late, low-hour examples approach new pricing because they save a wait for a build slot.

Annual running costs are serious. Four outboards each need yearly service, a large catamaran needs a wide slip or a lift built for more than 30,000 lb, and insurance on a seven figure, very fast fishing boat is not cheap. A realistic budget sits between about $65,000 and $130,000 a year before fuel heavy seasons and before depreciation. Trailering is technically possible but impractical for most owners at this weight and beam.

Tournament pedigree and resale strength

Freeman cats built their name on hard-running charter and tournament boats in Louisiana and the Carolinas, and the 47 inherits that reputation. It is a natural tournament boat for events where the fish are 80 to 150 miles out and the crew that gets there first, fresh and dry, wins. In big-money billfish and tuna events the combination of speed in rough water and enormous fuel capacity is hard to beat.

That pedigree keeps resale firm. Freeman builds steadily but not in high volume, and the 47 sits in a small niche of big outboard cats. Well-kept boats with documented engine maintenance tend to sell quickly and close to asking.

How much does a Freeman 47 cost?

New, typical sail-away$1.65M to $2.1M
Used, typical asking$1.05M to $1.75M
Yearly running costs$65K to $130K

Freeman 47 cost is set mainly by the quad engine package, the hardtop and the electronics suite. A fiberglass hardtop, dual 27 inch Garmin displays (possible only from the 2026 update), a gyro, air conditioning in the console and a center rigger can add several hundred thousand dollars to a base boat. Early 47s with original engines approaching 1,000 hours sit at the bottom of the used range; low-hour late boats trade close to new money because the build queue is long.

Our verdict on the Freeman 47

The Freeman 47 is for anglers who fish far offshore, often, and who want to do it in a boat that does not slow down when the sea builds. Its 1,025 gallons and 45 mph cruise give it range that only large inboard sportfishermen can rival, and the cat hull keeps crew fresher on long runs. Buyers who want a lavish cabin will find better options elsewhere, but as a long-distance fishing platform the 47 sits at the top of its class, and its resale reflects that.
