The Amel 54 is a 56 ft ketch built by Chantiers Amel in Périgny, La Rochelle, from 2005 to 2011, between the Super Maramu 2000 and the Amel 55. It sold fully equipped for about $965,000 in 2007.

An Amel 54 for sale is a piece of yard history
Few production boats carry as much of one man's thinking as an Amel, and the 54 is the boat that closes that chapter. Henri Amel founded the yard in 1965, built every boat since 1969 at Périgny on the edge of La Rochelle, and died on 12 April 2005, the year the 54 arrived. From 2005 Amel stopped naming boats after winds and islands, so the 54 became the first model to carry simply the AMEL name. Amel's own history lists it as built from 2005 to 2011, after the Super Maramu 2000 (1998 to 2006) and before the Amel 55 that appeared in 2011.
Anyone looking at an Amel 54 for sale is therefore choosing between generations. It keeps the Super Maramu's ketch rig, enclosed steering station and obsession with safety, but adds a longer, more modern hull and a more luxurious interior. Yachting World later noted that until the 55 and 64, every Amel was largely designed by Henri Amel himself; the 55 marked a turn toward more mainstream styling. The 54 sits on the traditional side of that line.
Everything included, the Amel way
Amel's brochure made a point that still matters to buyers: there were no extras to choose. The boat left the yard ready to sail with navigation electronics, air conditioning, a bow thruster and electric winches as standard. Cruising World's 2007 review added electric furling main and genoa, hydraulic pistons that lift the berths for access to stowage, a dishwasher, a deep freeze, a standard washer and dryer, built-in lee cloths, a passerelle and a lazarette large enough for an inflatable.
For a used buyer this standardization is a gift. Boats are far more alike than on semi-custom brands, parts and procedures are well known to Amel service centers and the owner community, and you can compare asking prices on condition rather than on wildly different spec sheets.
- Air conditioning, bow thruster and electric winches standard
- Electric furling for main and genoa
- Washer and dryer, dishwasher and deep freeze in the galley
- Passerelle and a lazarette that swallows a tender
A conservative ketch on a fin and full skeg
Cruising World described the sail plan and hull shape as conservative and designed for comfortable sailing, like the Super Maramu before it. The boat is a ketch with 140 m2 (1,507 sq ft) of sail on the wind and 192 m2 (2,066 sq ft) of total standard sail area according to Amel's brochure. The rudder hangs on a full skeg, a choice that old-school cruisers favor for protection, and the boat carries twin reaching poles for downwind work, the Amel answer to trade wind sailing without a spinnaker.
On Cruising World's test off Florida, in 16 knots on the beam with choppy cross seas, the 54 logged an effortless 9 knots. The split rig keeps individual sails small enough for a couple to handle, and with every sail on an electric furler the crew rarely has to leave the cockpit.
Steering from behind a hard windshield
The signature Amel feature is the steering station tucked behind a hard windshield and dodger, with push-button controls and readouts for nearly every system. Watchkeepers stay dry and warm, and the person on watch can trim, furl and monitor without moving. Cruising World's one caution was that visibility from the helm chair is limited, something to check on a test sail if you are tall or short.
U.S. agent Joel Potter summed up the design target for Cruising World: if you can lift 50 pounds, you can do everything on this boat yourself. That is a fair description of a boat aimed at older cruising couples who want to keep crossing oceans.
Watertight bulkheads and a one-piece structure
Safety is Amel's first priority and the 54 shows it. Cruising World counted four watertight bulkheads, a solid hull laminated to the deck rather than mechanically fastened, high bulwarks and full-length stainless railings. Amel's own history explains the method: the yard laminated the bulkheads, deck and hull into a single piece to make a watertight and extremely strong structure, a practice that goes back to Henri Amel's early adoption of polyester construction.
For buyers, a one-piece structure means no hull-to-deck joint to leak, but it also means interior access for repairs follows Amel's logic, not a generic yard's. Use a surveyor or service center familiar with Amels.
Leather, mahogany and two private cabins
Below, Amel used mahogany, leather and stainless steel, and Cruising World called the interior sumptuous. The brochure describes a roomy saloon, a modern and well-equipped galley, and private cabins with en suite washrooms and generous storage. The boat was designed for a crew of four to six, which makes it a genuine couple's boat with room for guests rather than a charter layout.
Tankage is serious, with 900 liters (237 gallons) each of diesel and fresh water, and the 110 hp Volvo Penta diesel gives a solid reserve for motoring through calms or into a harbor against wind.
Buying, importing and running a used 54
Most Amel 54s cruise in Europe, the Mediterranean and the Caribbean, so a US buyer often surveys abroad. Amel historically supported owners from its Atlantic, Mediterranean and Caribbean bases, and the owner community is strong. Budget for a delivery or shipping if the boat is far from home, and check VAT and import status carefully for boats that have spent time in the EU.
Running a 56 ft fully systemized ketch is expensive. Expect roughly $45,000 to $90,000 a year in the US, depending on slip location and how much work you do yourself. The bigger periodic bills are standing rigging on two masts, furling motors and gearboxes, the generator, watermaker and air conditioning, and sails on three furlers. A 54 whose owner kept up with Amel's maintenance schedule is worth paying for.
Super Maramu, 54 or 55?
The Super Maramu 2000 is cheaper and has a cult following, but it is an older and smaller hull. The 55 that followed is more modern in style and layout. The 54 is the middle path: the most refined version of the classic Amel formula, with a longer hull and more luxurious interior than the Super Maramu but the traditional look and systems logic that many Amel loyalists prefer. If you want a classic Amel that is still relatively young, this is the one to shortlist.

How much does a Amel 54 cost?
Amel sold the 54 almost fully equipped, so there are few option packages to price and condition dominates. Cruising World listed the boat at $965,000 in 2007, and used values today depend on whether the generator, watermaker, air conditioning and furling motors have been rebuilt, and on standing rigging age. Most boats are in Europe or the Caribbean; a 54 already lying in the US with a recent survey commands a premium. These ranges are our estimates rather than listing data.

Compare side by sideOur verdict on the Amel 54
The Amel 54 is the most complete expression of Henri Amel's original idea, delivered in the year he died. It is a boat that a couple in their sixties can sail across an ocean without leaving a protected seat, with tankage, safety features and standard equipment that few builders matched. It is also a dense collection of systems that must be maintained, so the right buy is a boat with a documented Amel-style maintenance history rather than the cheapest one on the market.
