Which Sunreef 60 are we talking about

Sunreef 60 is a name that has been used three times, and buyers searching listings need to know which one they are looking at. Sunreef Yachts, founded by Francis Lapp in Gdansk in 2002, had a first-generation Sunreef 60 on its brokerage pages by 2007. In 2013 came the Sunreef 60 Loft, with a full-height, open saloon that gave the brand its reputation for volume. The current Sunreef 60 premiered at the Cannes Yachting Festival in September 2018 alongside the Sunreef 80, introducing the design language that now runs across the range.

This guide focuses on the 2018 and later Sunreef 60, including the solar-electric Sunreef 60 Eco. We also explain how the 60 Sunreef Power, a motor catamaran on a related footprint, differs, because that is often what people searching for a Sunreef 60 power catamaran actually mean.

Semi-custom building in Gdansk

Sunreef is not a production yard in the Lagoon or Leopard sense. Each 60 is built to order, and owners choose cabin arrangements, interior materials, galley position, crew quarters and deck features. That flexibility is the main reason to buy a Sunreef instead of a series-built 60-footer, and it is also why two Sunreef 60s of the same year can differ by a million dollars in value.

The hulls of the new generation are higher and thinner than the Loft era, with tall, narrow bows that cut through waves instead of slamming. Combined with a 10.2 meter (33 foot 6 inch) beam on an 18.3 meter hull, that gives about 225 square meters (2,422 square feet) of living space spread over the main deck, hulls and flybridge, which is closer to a 75-foot monohull than to a 60-foot one.

Hull number five, Oca, was in service by mid 2019 after a 3,000-mile shakedown from Poland that included rough Baltic conditions.

  • Living space about 225 m2 (2,422 sq ft)
  • High bulwarks, a bow terrace and an aft platform across the range
  • Flybridge with grill, dining table, sunpads and an optional glass-sided Jacuzzi
  • Crew quarters, walk-in pantry and laundry in the hulls on owner layouts

Owner's hull, guest suites and where the crew sleeps

A common arrangement puts a master suite in the port hull and three guest staterooms in the starboard hull, each with its own head, for eight guests. On the boat Yacht Style tested, the port hull also housed a walk-in provision pantry aft and a laundry room in the bow, which tells you this is a yacht designed to be run by professional crew. Other layouts place the master forward on the main deck, swap the pantry for crew cabins or add a fifth cabin for charter.

Charter versions typically carry four en-suite guest cabins plus crew quarters forward, and weekly crewed charter rates vary widely with age, season and crew. For a private owner, the right question is how many crew you will carry. A 60-footer of this volume can be run by an experienced couple for short hops, but most owners employ a captain and a chef or stewardess.

Sailing a 60-foot floating villa

Nobody buys a Sunreef 60 for racing, and expectations should be set accordingly. Sunreef's current spec lists a 110 square meter mainsail and an 85 square meter genoa, and Oca carried a 112 square meter main, 90 square meter genoa and 185 square meter gennaker. Her captain reported a top of around 10 knots on a beam reach in 15 to 20 knots of wind, which is respectable for a boat of this volume and comparable to a Lagoon of similar size.

Where the boat earns its keep is motion. The high, fine bows and generous bridgedeck clearance reduce slamming in a head sea, and the wide beam makes the boat very stable at anchor, which matters far more to guests than another knot of boat speed. Sail handling uses powered winches at the flybridge helm, and furling headsails are standard.

The Sunreef 60 Eco and its integrated solar skin

The Sunreef 60 Eco, whose electric predecessor the 60 "E" won a Gustave Trouve award in 2021, swaps diesel engines for electric propulsion. Yachting World reported twin 70 kW electric motors, lithium battery banks of 140 to 200 kWh, and twin 80 kW diesel generators as range extenders. Sunreef's own solar panels are laminated into the hull sides, superstructure and hardtop, less than a millimeter thick, with up to 17 kW of solar capacity depending on the options chosen.

The practical benefit is silence and independence at anchor. With the full solar package an Eco is designed to run house loads continuously, even overnight, without starting a generator, and it can motor short distances on battery alone. Expect Eco boats to sit at the top of the Sunreef 60 price range, with listings that have asked from about 5.8 to 7.2 million euros.

Our advice: the Eco is compelling if you spend most of your time at anchor in sunny latitudes and value quiet. If you plan long motoring legs, the generators do the work and the efficiency advantage narrows. Make sure any used Eco has full battery health reports and that service support for the electrical system is available where you cruise.

Sail or power, the 60 Sunreef Power alternative

The 60 Sunreef Power is a motor catamaran in the same size class, launched with the first boat, Lilu, in 2013 and redesigned since. It offers the same Sunreef approach to volume, with a flybridge and full-beam master, but with much larger diesel engines. The electric 60 Sunreef Power Eco followed, and listings for 2024 boats have asked about 6.8 million euros.

If you want to cover distance quickly between anchorages, the Power is the better tool. If you want to cruise slowly and quietly with the option to sail, the sailing 60 is the more versatile yacht and generally cheaper to run.

Running costs, crew and charter income

Budget about $180,000 to $420,000 a year for a privately run Sunreef 60 with at least one full-time crew member, excluding depreciation. Crew wages, insurance on a multi-million dollar hull, a 33-foot beam that needs superyacht-style berthing, and maintenance on generators, watermakers and air conditioning dominate the bill. Fuel is a smaller line item than on a motor yacht.

Many owners offset costs by placing the boat in crewed charter in the Caribbean or Mediterranean. That can cover a large share of running costs, but it accelerates wear and affects resale. When you buy used, ask for charter logs, crew turnover and refit history, and expect to spend 5 to 10 percent of purchase price on a refresh after a heavy charter career.

Reading the used Sunreef 60 market

Used diesel Sunreef 60s from 2019 and 2020 have listed between roughly $2.5 and $3.5 million, which is well below new replacement cost. Older 60 Loft and first-generation boats sit lower still and can be good value for a buyer prepared to refit, but they are heavier and the styling is visibly dated.

Because each boat is semi-custom, comparables are weak. Price a used Sunreef 60 on its specific equipment, layout, engine hours, generator hours and paint condition, and insist on a survey by someone who knows large composite cats, including a moisture survey of the bows and the hull to deck joint.

How much does a Sunreef 60 cost?

New, typical sail-away$4.5M to $7.5M
Used, typical asking$1.3M to $4.2M
Yearly running costs$180K to $420K

Every new Sunreef 60 is semi-custom, so the gap between a diesel boat with a standard interior and a fully optioned 60 Eco with carbon elements and integrated solar is several million dollars; Eco boats sit at the top of that range in our estimate, and Eco listings have asked from about 5.8 to 7.2 million euros. Used diesel boats from 2019 and 2020 have listed between about $2.5 and $3.5 million. Older Sunreef 60 Loft and first-generation 60 hulls trade much lower, and charter history weighs heavily on price.

Our verdict on the Sunreef 60

The Sunreef 60 is the catamaran for buyers who want a superyacht's volume on a 60-foot footprint and are ready to pay for crew. It is not a performance boat and it is not cheap to run, but no other 60-foot sailing catamaran gives you this much space or this much say in how it is built. Used 2019 and 2020 boats at $2.5 to $3.5 million are the value play; the 60 Eco is for owners who want silence at anchor and are happy to be early adopters.
