43E, what the E stands for and where this trawler came from
The E in 43E stands for evolution. PassageMaker's 2025 sea trial explains that the 43 was launched in 2015 as a derivation of Helmsman's popular 38, and the 43E is the second generation of that model. Helmsman's own description is simple: the 38 Pilothouse expanded in every dimension, with a longer and wider hull and more freeboard, to add a second stateroom, a bigger salon, more seating and a larger cockpit.
Helmsman Trawlers is led by Scott Helker, its founder and president, who is also co-founder of Waterline Boats. The company sells a tight range, from the 31-foot Sedan derived from the old Camano 31 hull up through the 38E, 43E and the newer 46 Pilothouse. Helker told Soundings that the line had developed a reputation for exceptionally well-built trawlers sold at a price that made them a great value, and that customer demand drove each step up in size.
The 43E has collected recognition along the way. Helmsman says BoatTEST members selected it as the 2022 Best Coastal Cruiser, and its smaller sibling, the 38E, won the People's Choice Award at Trawlerfest 2019. PassageMaker's tester came away calling it an honest-to-goodness trawler and said he would be proud to own one.
No side decks forward, and a salon like a 50-footer
The defining design choice on the 43E is the beam-to-beam salon. There are no side decks leading forward from the covered cockpit, so the salon runs the full 14-foot-2-inch beam. PassageMaker said the result is an interior befitting a 50-foot yacht. To reach the bow, crew step out of port or starboard pilothouse doors, where deep footwells and sturdy rails take over.
Helmsman trawlers are traditionally boxy, but the 43E's extra length gives a more elegant look at the bow. The other signature is a pair of raked, molded stairs from the pilothouse area up to the open flybridge. They are far more secure than ladder-style steps, which matters for older owners, pets and children.
Up top, the flybridge has a helm, an L-shaped settee, a hinged radar mast, dinghy davit and tender stowage. BoatTEST measured the aft boat deck at 12 feet 3 inches by 9 feet 6 inches, big enough for a tender and paddleboards or for a crane. The aft cockpit below measures 5 feet 7 inches by 12 feet 9 inches with 7 feet 2 inches of overhead.
Two staterooms, a day head and serious joinery
The galley sits amidships to serve both the interior dinette and the cockpit. The salon has U-shaped seating with a solid wood table that can convert to a berth, and a day head with shower adjacent to the salon, a rare and practical feature. Helmsman notes that the convertible settee and day head can be closed off to create a private suite for extra guests.
The low-rise pilothouse is only two steps up because there is machinery space rather than a stateroom underneath, which keeps the profile and bridge clearance low. BoatTEST measured 13 feet 6 inches with the antenna arch lowered. The pilothouse has an L-shaped settee on a raised platform, a workstation with the main electrical panel, and a helm delivered with a blank panel so owners can lay out electronics as they like.
Below and forward, the master has an island berth BoatTEST measured at 78 by 56 inches with 7 feet of headroom, and the guest stateroom to port has a queen-size berth. The forward head with separate walk-in shower serves both cabins. Every tester has singled out the teak joinery, hand-brushed varnish and teak-and-holly soles as among the best at this price.
One Cummins, a big rudder, and what the tests showed
Helmsman's current spec lists a single Cummins QSB 6.7 common-rail diesel at 380 hp. BoatTEST's 2022 test boat had the 380 hp engine turning a 24-by-26-inch propeller and reached 11.3 knots at 3,000 rpm. At a practical 7.3 to 8.2 knots, fuel burn ran 2.7 to 4.3 gallons per hour for an estimated range of 1,201 to 857 nautical miles.
PassageMaker's 2025 test boat had the 250 hp version of the same Cummins. The tester found the boat happiest at 6 to 9 knots between about 1,000 and 2,500 rpm, burning roughly 1.2 to 5.8 gallons per hour, and saw about 11 knots at 3,070 rpm wide open on 10.3 gph. Either way, this is classic trawler performance, and the larger engine mostly buys reserve power rather than much more speed.
Handling earns consistent praise. A jumbo stainless rudder behind a stainless skeg gives strong low-speed authority, and bow and stern thrusters are standard; PassageMaker notes the 43E was the first Helmsman with a standard stern thruster. BoatTEST docked the test boat with inches to spare on either side. Helmsman builds boats with or without stabilizers, reflecting confidence in the hull, and offers Seakeeper and MagnusMaster rotor stabilization.
How Helmsman builds it, and the systems you get
Helmsman describes a solid hand-laid fiberglass hull with vinylester resin in the external layers and an internal FRP grid for stiffness, with PVC-cored decks and vacuum-infused cored superstructures. Fuel goes in two fiberglass tanks and water in two stainless tanks. Interior soles are a multi-layer composite with a rubber-cork inner layer, which PassageMaker credited for keeping engine noise low enough to talk normally at any rpm.
Standard equipment includes Sleipner bow and stern thrusters, a Lewmar windlass with 200 feet of chain, Victron charging and isolation transformers, Blue Sea panels, LED lighting and a full-length cockpit cover. Generators, stabilization and a washer-dryer are options. Boats are commissioned in Seattle or Charleston with training included, and Helmsman backs them with a 12-month general warranty and a 36-month hull and deck warranty.
The builder notes that US residents may consider foreign flagging to avoid import duties, which tells you these boats are built abroad at what Helmsman calls its dedicated yard. Ask about the yard, the build schedule and how warranty work is handled before you sign.
Living with a 43E, running costs and the one real annoyance
With a single diesel burning about 3 to 4 gallons an hour at 8 knots, fuel is a modest part of the budget. Expect roughly $35,000 to $70,000 a year in total for a slip, insurance, maintenance, haul-outs and fuel, depending on region and how far you cruise.
The one complaint from PassageMaker is worth knowing. The engine room hatch is in the pilothouse sole, and because the beam-to-beam salon leaves no outside path forward, opening that hatch blocks the only route fore and aft through the boat. It is minor in daily use but annoying during engine checks underway.

How much does a Helmsman Trawlers 43E Pilothouse cost?
Helmsman lists the 43E Pilothouse at $739,000 well equipped, including shipping, delivery, commissioning and training in Seattle or Charleston but excluding taxes and duties. PassageMaker quoted a standard price of $635,000 in mid-2025 with the 250 hp engine, so check which engine and options a quote includes. Stabilization, generator, davit and electronics push the final figure up; used boats are young and few, so they trade close to replacement cost.

Compare side by sideOur verdict on the Helmsman Trawlers 43E Pilothouse
The Helmsman 43E Pilothouse is what a trawler is supposed to be: a heavy, full-keeled, single-diesel boat that goes the distance slowly and comfortably, wrapped around one of the most generous salons in its size range. Trading away the forward side decks is a real compromise and the engine hatch placement is clumsy, but for a cruising couple who live inside more than they walk around outside, the payoff is huge. With strong joinery, standard thrusters and a competitive price, it is one of the best-value new trawlers in the 40 to 50 foot class.
