The Krogen built around two people and a long horizon

Anyone searching for a Kadey Krogen 44 is usually past the stage of comparing planing cruisers. They have decided that speed is not the point, that a boat which burns three or four gallons an hour at seven knots will take them farther and more comfortably than one burning thirty at twenty, and that the hull shape matters more than the saloon finish. The Krogen 44 AE was built for exactly that buyer: a couple who plan to live aboard for months at a time, cruise the Great Loop or the Inside Passage, and occasionally run offshore to the Bahamas.

Kadey-Krogen was founded in 1977 by Art Kadey and naval architect Jim Krogen, and its first boat, the Krogen 42, became one of the defining American trawlers of the 1980s. Since 1991 the company built its boats at a dedicated yard in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, while design, sales and customer support were run from the United States. The 44 AE sits at the small end of the later range, below the 48 AE, 52, 55 and 58, and shares their basic formula of a full displacement hull, single engine, generous tankage and an interior laid out for two with occasional guests.

There is a hard fact every buyer now has to factor in. In July 2026 it was reported that Kadey-Krogen Yachts would file for Chapter 7, a liquidation rather than a reorganization, and Power & Motoryacht described the company as out of production. Until the situation is settled, do not count on factory warranty claims, a factory parts desk or new 44 AE builds, and confirm the builder's current status and any warranty support with the seller, a former Kadey-Krogen broker or the bankruptcy trustee. That does not change how the boat runs, but it does change how you should buy one.

Round bilges, a deep forefoot and a keel that guards the wheel

Krogen hulls follow a consistent recipe that the builder described across the range: a fine entry with a deep forefoot, a long keel running aft to protect the propeller and rudder shoe, rising buttock lines, and a stern shaped to stay controllable in a following sea. On the 44 AE that combination produces a boat that tracks well, does not slam, and rolls in a slow, predictable arc rather than snapping back.

Full displacement means the speed ceiling is set by waterline length, not horsepower. Hull speed on a boat of this size is in the high sevens to around eight knots, and pushing beyond that piles water at the stern and multiplies fuel burn for very little gain. Owners settle at 6.5 to 7.5 knots, where the boat is quietest.

The full keel is also a grounding insurance policy. On the Intracoastal Waterway, in the Bahamas or on the rivers of the Great Loop, a soft grounding on a Krogen usually means the keel touches first and the running gear stays clear. That is a major reason Krogens are popular with Loopers despite drafts that are deeper than a semi-displacement boat of the same length.

Pilothouse, side decks and line handling for two

The pilothouse is where a couple spends long passage days, and Krogen designed it like a workplace: a centerline helm with good sightlines over the bow, a raised settee behind so the off-watch crew can sit with the skipper, and doors to the side decks for quick access when docking. Protected walkways and solid bulwarks with substantial rails make it practical to move forward with a line in hand while the boat is moving, which matters far more on a Great Loop lock day than any saloon feature.

The flybridge is modest by sportfish standards but adequate for a second helm, a dinghy and a small seating area. For canal and river cruising the mast is designed to lower, and many owners treat the flybridge as a fair-weather perch rather than a primary station. Before committing to a Loop, measure the actual air draft of the specific boat with its mast lowered and all antennas folded. Kadey-Krogen's specification lists about 23 feet 3 inches of bridge clearance with the mast up and 13 feet 8 inches to the top of the flybridge coaming with it down, but owners frequently add arches, radomes and satellite domes.

Living aboard a 44 AE for a season or longer

The 44 AE layout is built around a full-beam or near full-beam master stateroom, a second guest cabin that many owners use as an office, two heads, and a main deck with saloon and galley on one level. The galley gets proper counter space and a residential refrigerator on most boats, and the saloon windows are large enough that the boat does not feel like a cave on rainy days at anchor.

Storage is where Krogen designs usually beat their rivals. Deep lockers, an engine room you can stand or kneel in comfortably, and a lazarette sized for spare parts make it realistic to carry the filters, impellers, belts and pumps a single-engine boat should have aboard. For full-time liveaboards, the second head and the guest cabin turned workroom are what make a 44 feel bigger than its length.

Range at displacement speed and what it means on the water

A single John Deere diesel turning a large, slow propeller is the engine of choice across the Krogen range. The factory specification for the 44 lists a 160 hp John Deere 4045AFM85 with a ZF gear turning a 28 inch four-blade propeller, and the burn at 6.5 to 7 knots typically lands in the 2.5 to 4 gallon per hour range depending on load, bottom condition and generator use. Kadey-Krogen specified 850 gallons of fuel and 300 gallons of water, which is why owners plan legs of well over 1,000 nautical miles at seven knots without anxiety, and far more at six. We leave the range field blank because no factory range table for the 44 AE was available to us.

For context, the larger Krogen 48 AE carries 1,000 gallons and its published range table shows about 3,020 nautical miles at 7 knots and 4,730 nautical miles at 6 knots with a 10 percent reserve. The 44 AE shares the same philosophy at a smaller scale. That sort of range transforms how you cruise: you buy fuel where it is cheap, skip expensive marinas, and cross from Florida to the Bahamas and back without thinking about refueling.

For the Great Loop, which runs roughly 6,000 miles, a 44 AE at seven knots will burn somewhere in the region of 2,000 to 3,000 gallons over the full circuit, depending on side trips and generator hours. A planing 40-footer can burn two or three times that.

Is the 44 AE a good Great Loop boat

Yes, with two caveats. The first is air draft. The fixed railroad bridge near Lemont, Illinois limits Loop boats to roughly 19 feet 1 inch, and the western Erie Canal is lower still at around 15 feet 6 inches, so Loopers often route through the Oswego Canal and Lake Ontario instead. A 44 AE must be able to lower its mast and antennas to clear the Chicago route; verify that on the actual boat.

The second is draft. Full displacement trawlers draw more than semi-displacement cruisers, and the rivers and the Tenn-Tom Waterway reward boats under 5 feet. A Krogen is still very manageable, but you will plan anchorages with more care than a Ranger Tug owner. In exchange you get a boat that handles Lake Michigan chop, the open Gulf crossing from Carrabelle to Tarpon Springs, and the Atlantic legs far more comfortably than most Loop boats.

Owning a Krogen with the builder out of production

The reported Chapter 7 filing changes the ownership equation in three practical ways. First, do not assume any remaining factory warranty will be honored; confirm its status in writing before you buy, and value the boat on its documented condition. Second, boat-specific parts such as custom windows, hatches, rails and molded components will have to come from the owner network, salvage or fabrication rather than a factory parts desk. Third, the drivetrain is not the problem: John Deere engines, standard transmissions, thrusters and electronics all have national dealer support.

Krogen owners have long been one of the most active owner communities in the trawler world, with rendezvous, technical forums and a culture of sharing drawings and fixes. That community will matter more now. Buyers should ask sellers for every manual, wiring diagram and build sheet that came with the boat, because those documents just became harder to replace.

Annual running costs for a 44 AE cruising 800 to 1,200 engine hours a year typically run $28,000 to $55,000 before depreciation, covering insurance, a slip or mooring, haul-out and bottom paint, engine and generator service, and fuel. Fuel itself is a small share of that number compared with planing boats of the same length.

What a used 44 AE costs and where values may go

Most 44 AEs we see on the US brokerage market ask between about $650,000 and $1.1 million, with the oldest boats at the bottom and late, lightly used, well-equipped hulls at the top. Before 2026 these boats sold quickly and rarely took steep discounts. Uncertainty over the builder's status may soften pricing temporarily as some sellers worry about support, which creates an opening for an informed buyer who surveys thoroughly.

How much does a Kadey-Krogen 44 AE cost?

New, typical sail-awayNo longer built
Used, typical asking$650K to $1.1M
Yearly running costs$28K to $55K

Asking prices depend heavily on hull age, engine hours and how much offshore gear the first owner installed, such as stabilizers, a generator, a dinghy davit and redundant electronics. Kadey-Krogen boats have historically held value better than most production trawlers, but July 2026 reports that the builder would file for Chapter 7 liquidation add uncertainty, so expect buyers to negotiate harder and surveys to be more thorough until the market settles.

Our verdict on the Kadey-Krogen 44 AE

The Kadey-Krogen 44 AE is one of the best-conceived couples' trawlers of its generation: efficient, safe on deck, comfortable at anchor and capable of serious range at seven knots. The builder's reported 2026 liquidation is a real consideration, but the engine, transmission and systems are mainstream and supportable, and a well documented boat bought after a thorough survey remains an excellent long-range cruiser. Buy on condition and paperwork, not on badge.

Kadey-Krogen 44 AE questions answered

How fast is a Kadey Krogen 44?

It is a full displacement trawler, so it cruises at about 6.5 to 7.5 knots and tops out near hull speed in the high sevens to around eight knots. Pushing harder burns much more fuel for very little gain.

What is the range of a Kadey Krogen 44 AE?

Owners routinely plan legs well over 1,000 nautical miles at seven knots and much more at six. Kadey-Krogen specified 850 gallons of fuel, but check the specific boat's tanks and burn records before planning a long passage.

Is Kadey-Krogen still in business?

Not at present. In July 2026 it was reported that Kadey-Krogen would file for Chapter 7 liquidation and the company is out of production, so confirm the builder's current status and any warranty support before relying on it.

Is the Krogen 44 AE good for the Great Loop?

Yes, it is a comfortable and efficient Loop boat as long as the mast and antennas lower enough to clear the roughly 19 foot fixed bridge near Chicago. Its draft is deeper than a semi-displacement boat, so plan shallow anchorages carefully.

How much does a used Kadey Krogen 44 AE cost?

Most list between about $650,000 and $1.1 million in 2026, depending on age, engine hours and equipment such as stabilizers and generators.

Where were Kadey-Krogen trawlers built?

Since 1991 they were built at a dedicated yard in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, with design and sales handled from the United States.
