Why Nordhavn built a 51 in Istanbul
Anyone searching Nordhavn 51 for sale, or the common misspelling Nordhaven for sale, is looking at one of the shortest production runs in the brand's history. Pacific Asian Enterprises announced the 51 in January 2021 as a bigger sistership to the Nordhavn 41, the first Nordhavn built in Turkey. Seven hulls were reserved at announcement, and the company said the first hull would be laid up that March at the Turkish factory with about 18 months of construction to follow.
The idea was a departure for Nordhavn. Instead of the semi-custom approach used at its Asian yards, the 51 followed the 41's series production model: a set build order and a long, fixed standard specification, so the boat could be priced and built efficiently. PAE described the target buyer as a 41 enthusiast who wanted more room, more heads and a flybridge.
Hull 1 left Istanbul in spring 2024 on a 600 mile maiden passage to Rhodes. By the time hull 2 made the model's public debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show that autumn, Nordhavn said 18 hulls were under agreement, many sold sight unseen.

July 2026, the end of the line after about ten hulls
On July 28, 2026, PAE announced it was halting production at Telgeren and Partners and retiring both Turkish models. The release said 54 Nordhavn 41s and 51s had been built and delivered in total, 44 of them 41s, which leaves roughly ten Nordhavn 51s. PAE cited high Turkish inflation and a managed lira that made costs unpredictable, and said Telgeren could not honor price commitments on about ten boats under retail contract, so PAE supplied the capital to finish them and honor every contract as written.
As with every retired Nordhavn, the molds will be destroyed. PAE president Dan Streech said the 41 and 51 were just hitting their stride and that the last boats from the factory were among the finest to carry the Nordhavn name.
For buyers this is the single most important fact about the model. You are shopping a closed fleet of around ten boats, spread between Europe and the US, with no new-build alternative. That cuts both ways: scarcity should support value, but parts and know-how for builder-specific details will increasingly come from Nordhavn's service network and the owner group rather than a running production line.
Twin 160 hp Deeres instead of the classic single
Traditional Nordhavns pair one main diesel with a small wing engine. The 51, like the 41 before it, breaks that rule with two commercially rated John Deere 4045AFM85 M1 engines of 160 bhp each, turning counter-rotating 30 inch four blade props through ZF220 gears at 3:1. The shafts run in Y-struts tied into stainless rudder shoes, and exhaust is wet, through fiberglass mufflers, rather than the dry stack older Nordhavn buyers may expect.
Nordhavn called the 51 the slipperiest Nordhavn hull it had sea trialed, easily holding about 9 knots with a top end above 10. On hull 1's first voyage the crew averaged 9 knots and reached 11 knots without effort. PAE rates range at 3,000 miles on 1,450 gallons, presumably at a slower displacement speed; we have not seen a published speed and fuel table, so plan your own consumption tests during sea trial.
A spec sheet that left little to option
The appeal of the 51 is that most of what a passagemaking owner would add was already on the boat. The standard list, as published by Nordhavn and reported by Passagemaker, included the items below, plus a complete Garmin electronics suite with twin plotters, autopilot, sounder and VHF, and a Fusion sound system.
The interior uses satin walnut paneling, teak floors and white Corian counters, with Grohe fixtures, two Summit refrigerators and a refrigerator/freezer in the galley. Through-hulls are TruDesign composite rather than bronze, and steering is a HyproMarine electric command system with an emergency tiller.
- Humphree electric fin stabilizers with 0.6 square meter fins
- Onan 11.5 kW generator
- Side-Power 13.5 hp bow thruster with joystick stations
- Steelhead davit rated at 1,000 lb, room for a 10 ft tender on the flybridge
- Separate washer and dryer, extra freezer
- Six person offshore liferaft
- Dometic VacuFlush heads, 85 gallon holding and 85 gallon gray tanks
Two en suite cabins, a day head and the off-watch bunk
There was only one layout, and it is a good one for a cruising couple. Two staterooms below each have their own head, so guests are not a compromise. A separate day head opens off the cockpit so visitors and swimmers do not traipse through the boat. Up in the separate pilothouse, an off-watch berth lets the person not on watch sleep within reach of the helm, which is exactly what a two person offshore crew needs, and at the dock it becomes a spare bed.
Outside, the 51 adds what the 41 lacked: a flybridge with a 360 degree view, a settee and table, plus a forward seating area on the foredeck and a covered cockpit big enough for chairs and a table. It is a more sociable boat than most Nordhavns of this size.
Commissioning in the Mediterranean or Florida
Nordhavn offered buyers delivery at the factory with a Mediterranean shakedown, or shipping to Florida at extra cost for commissioning at its southeast hub. Several owners chose Europe: hull 1, Awanui NZ, belongs to New Zealanders Mark and Fiona Rammell, who had covered about 8,500 miles in two years by early 2026 and planned a multi-year circumnavigation, and hull 5 went to Athens. Other hulls were offloaded in Palm Beach, including 5107 in August 2025 and 5108, delivered in 2026 to owners stepping up from a Nordhavn 41.
When buying used, establish the tax position first. A boat in the US may owe import duty if bought by a US resident, and a European boat's VAT status changes its price and cruising options. Nordhavn's brokers deal with this routinely.
What a Nordhavn 51 should cost to own
With twin 160 hp engines and a displacement hull, fuel is not the big line item. Expect annual costs of roughly $55,000 to $100,000 in the US, covering a 55 ft slip, offshore-capable insurance, two engine services plus generator and stabilizer maintenance, bottom work and electronics updates. Owners crossing oceans should add spares, liferaft servicing and survey travel.
We estimate resale between about $1.5 million and $2.2 million, but with so few boats, comparable sales will be thin for years. A buyer who finds a well-kept, duty-paid boat in the US should move quickly; Nordhavn's own brokers have written about clusters of same-model boats selling within weeks of each other once demand turns.

Figures come from builder documentation and independent tests where available. Displacement is usually quoted light, so a loaded cruising boat will weigh more. Compare these specs with another model.
How much does a Nordhavn 51 cost?
We could not find a published base price for the Nordhavn 51, which was sold on a fixed specification through Nordhavn's own sales offices. For context, Nordhavn's brokerage recently listed a 2021 Nordhavn 41, the smaller Turkish sistership, at $985,000. With roughly ten N51s in existence and molds destroyed, any resale will be a negotiated, low-volume market, and whether the boat has VAT paid in Europe or US duty paid will move price significantly. Treat these bands as estimates.

Strengths and weaknesses
What owners like
- Complete standard specification with stabilizers, davit and electronics
- Two en suite staterooms plus a day head
- Flybridge and foredeck seating, unusual for a Nordhavn this size
- Easy 9 knot cruise and 3,000 mile rated range
- CE Category A ocean certification
- Rarity should help long-term value
What to weigh up
- Only about ten were built, so comparables and parts knowledge are thin
- Twin engines mean twice the engine maintenance of a single
- Wet exhaust departs from the dry stack Nordhavn tradition
- No published speed and fuel table to plan from
- Tax and duty status can complicate cross-border purchases

Compare side by sideOur verdict on the Nordhavn 51
The Nordhavn 51 was a clever answer to a real question: how do you deliver a serious ocean trawler with a flybridge, two proper guest-ready cabins and a complete spec without a two year custom process? It worked, buyers lined up, and then economics in Turkey ended the run at about ten boats. That makes the 51 both a capable cruiser and a collector's piece in the trawler world. If you can find one with clean paperwork and a known history, it is one of the most practical modern Nordhavns for a cruising couple, and its scarcity is likely to keep it in demand.
