One owner, one canal lock and a new Nordhavn

Nordhavn is a name many buyers search before they know which model they want, and the 63 is one of the more unusual answers. It exists because Scottish owner Nigel McLeod, stepping up from a Nordhavn 47, wanted the freighter look of the Nordhavn 62, with its aft wheelhouse and sweeping foredeck. The catch was his home berth at Hilton Head, reached through a canal lock 20 feet wide and narrower in practice because of its fendering. The 62 is 19 ft 10 in wide.

Jeff Leishman told Yachting the team tried design gymnastics to slim the 62 before deciding to draw an aft wheelhouse on the narrower Nordhavn 60 hull instead. The result was the Nordhavn 63, with an 18 ft beam. Hull 1 began construction at South Coast Marine in Xiamen in August 2009 as a single engine, dry stack boat, and Nordhavn held contracts for the first three hulls by early 2010.

Soundings later described the 63 as the replacement for the 62, of which Nordhavn built 37 or 38 depending on the source. By March 2025, Nordhavn said 20 Nordhavn 63s had been delivered.

The N55 and N60 hull under a completely new deck

Underneath, the 63 uses one of Nordhavn's most tested hull forms, the 55, which was stretched into the 60. What is new is above the waterline: a new deck mold, a new engine room mold and an aft pilothouse that leaves the foredeck free as a boat deck. Nordhavn's spec shows a 62 ft 6 in length overall, 57 ft 3 in waterline, 18 ft beam, 6 ft 8 in draft and an air draft of 29 ft 7 in.

Displacement is quoted differently by era. Yachting's test of hull 1 listed 130,000 lb, while Soundings and Nordhavn's current specification give 143,000 lb. Either way this is a heavy, deep boat, with about 10,000 lb of lead ballast. Jim Leishman said the fuller stern sections common to newer Nordhavns give a bigger lazarette, more load-carrying ability and better pitch motion than the older, sailboat-like lines of the 62.

On sea trial, Nordhavn's commissioning manager invited Yachting's tester to take his hands off the wheel. The boat simply kept tracking. He said he did not know why, but the 63 steers on a line.

Speed and fuel burn, measured on hull 1

Yachting published Nordhavn-provided figures from hull 1, Silver Spray, measured by GPS off Juno Beach, Florida, in one foot seas with two-thirds fuel and full water. With a 330 hp John Deere 6081AFM, the boat made 7.55 knots at 1,216 rpm on 5.3 gph, 8.1 knots at 1,314 rpm on 6.7 gph, and 9.8 knots at 1,803 rpm on 17 gph. The step from 8 to 9 knots more than doubles fuel burn, which is the physics of a 57 ft waterline.

Soundings, reporting on a later boat with a 340 hp Lugger, gave range as 3,195 nautical miles at 7.6 knots and top speed of about 10 knots. Nordhavn's own number is the round 3,000 miles it uses across the fleet. Plan at 7.5 to 8 knots and you have genuine transocean range on 2,500 gallons, spread across four main tanks and a 31 gallon aluminum day tank fed by gravity.

Single engine, dry stack, and why you want the wing

The standard machinery is a single keel-cooled diesel with a dry stack exhaust, a Nordhavn signature that removes raw water pumps and wet exhaust components from the main engine circuit. Hull 1 used a 330 hp John Deere 6081AFM; Nordhavn's current sheet specifies a John Deere 6090AFM at 325 hp through a ZF gear of almost 4:1, and several boats have a 340 hp Lugger L1276A. At least one late hull is listed by YachtBuyer with twin engines, so read each listing carefully.

A wing engine is optional. Hull 1 had a 65 hp Lugger with a folding prop that pushed the boat at about 4 knots; the 2017 boat YachtBuyer toured had a 100 hp John Deere wing that also powers hydraulics for the thrusters, windlass and stabilizers. Yachting's tester put it bluntly: a prudent mariner should think hard before going to sea without one. Most 63s carry two generators, typically a 20 kW Northern Lights primary and a smaller backup.

Main deck galley, two big cabins and a captain's suite up top

Stepping in from the cockpit, the saloon is larger than on the 55 or 60 and finished in raised panel cherry as standard, with teak options on some boats. The galley is on the same level, a defined U-shaped space with a pass-through to the saloon, granite counters, Sub-Zero refrigeration and an LPG cooktop. A walk-in pantry sits in the passage forward.

Down three steps, the master is near amidships to port with an athwartships walkaround berth and en suite head. The guest cabin is all the way forward on the centerline with its own head, which can double as the day head. A three stateroom version trades the second head for a single-berth cabin. Below that again is a utility room with laundry, a second freezer and crew bunks, plus a hatch to a forward machinery space Nordhavn owners nickname the wine cellar or basement.

Up in the pilothouse there is a settee and table, the helm and a captain's cabin with double berth and its own head behind a glass partition. YachtBuyer noted it is nice enough to serve as a guest cabin, and on passage it keeps the watch stander next to the helm.

A foredeck built for a 17 foot tender

The freighter layout pays off on deck. With the house aft, the foredeck becomes a boat deck that can carry a RIB of up to about 17 feet, launched by a standard Steelhead ES 1500 telescoping crane rated at 1,500 lb. A Portuguese bridge wraps the front of the pilothouse, with optional port and starboard docking stations, and a raised lounge deck aft of the wheelhouse makes a sheltered lookout.

The house is asymmetric, so there is one protected side deck to starboard with a boarding gate near a saloon door. The cockpit is deep and covered by the deck above, and the swim platform is for swimming only, since the tender lives forward.

How the Nordhavn 63 brokerage market behaves

Nordhavn's own brokers wrote in 2025 that four 63s had sat on the market for up to a year, then three went under contract within three weeks, leaving one. With only about 20 built, they argue each boat is semi-custom and should be judged on its own specification, history and maintenance rather than against the others.

Asking prices we have seen run from $1.92 million for a 2013 boat to $2.99 million for a 2022 hull, with a 2017 boat reviewed at $2.295 million excluding VAT. We estimate the 2026 range at about $1.8 million to $3 million. Annual costs are substantial: roughly $110,000 to $200,000 for dockage, insurance, haul-outs, two generators, stabilizers, crane, and the electronics a boat of this size carries, more if you employ a captain.

Who the 63 suits, and who should look at a 60 instead

Choose the 63 if you value the aft wheelhouse ride, a big tender on the foredeck and main deck living with a captain's cabin by the helm. Choose the forward pilothouse Nordhavn 60 if you prefer a traditional layout with the boat deck aft. The 18 ft beam makes either easier to berth than the old 62, and the 6 ft 8 in draft is the main limit for thin-water cruising.

Yachting reported a base price of $1,850,000 when hull 1 was tested, noting it undercut the $2.2 million Nordhavn 62. On the brokerage market a 2013 boat, True Blue, recently asked $1,920,000 after a reduction, YachtBuyer reviewed a 2017 example priced at $2,295,000 excluding VAT, and a 2022 hull was listed at $2,990,000. Engine choice, wing engine, stabilizer and tender setup and US duty status drive the spread. Nordhavn quotes new-build pricing on request, so we do not publish a new price.

Rivals to consider

Nordhavn 57

An older, smaller Nordhavn passagemaker that costs far less but lacks the aft wheelhouse and foredeck tender stowage.

Compare side by side

Fleming 65

A faster twin engine pilothouse yacht with more coastal than ocean focus and higher fuel burn.

Compare side by side

Nordhavn 60

Same hull with a forward pilothouse and boat deck aft, for buyers who prefer a traditional Nordhavn layout.

Outer Reef 630

A shallower draft, much faster semi-displacement rival for owners who value 16 knot cruising over ocean range.

Our verdict on the Nordhavn 63

The Nordhavn 63 is what happens when a builder listens to one stubborn customer and ends up with a better boat. It keeps the romance of the old freighter-style 62 but sits on a newer, steadier hull, fits where the 62 cannot and adds main deck living plus a proper captain's cabin. It is expensive to buy and run and deep in the water, but for an owner who actually plans to cross oceans with a big tender aboard, it is one of the most complete expedition yachts in the 60 ft class, and the small fleet keeps resale firm.
