The Elling E3 in plain terms
The Elling E3 is the boat that started a small Dutch cult. It is a 45 foot 3 inch pilothouse cruiser with one main engine on a shaft, a hull laid up with aramid reinforcement, CE Category A (Ocean) certification and an electrically lowering mast that brings the air draft down to 11 feet 4 inches. Neptune Marine in Aalst, a shipyard better known for tugs and workboats, launched the first one in 1998, and the model is still built today under the Elling Shipbuilding name.
If you are coming from American trawlers, think of the E3 as something between a Nordic Tug and a European canal cruiser that happens to be rated for open ocean. It is not a full-displacement passagemaker and it is not a planing express. It is a semi-displacement boat designed to sip fuel at 7.5 knots and still run in the mid to high teens when weather or tide makes speed worth paying for.
Five years on the drawing board, then a pilot-boat attitude
Elling's own history says the concept was set in 1997, and the factory-linked brokerage that has sold Ellings for more than 16 years says the first boat touched water in 1998 after roughly five years of development and many trial layouts. The brief was unusually narrow for a production yacht: a motor yacht under 15 meters that could cross an ocean without giving up home comforts or the ability to slip under European bridges.
Motor Boat & Yachting described the E3 as tracing its ancestry to North Sea pilot vessels, and you see that in the details: high stainless handrails at 80 cm, a deep forefoot, commercial-strength windows, a sealed sliding wheelhouse roof and a single rudder behind a well-protected propeller. The shipyard behind it was founded in 1972 and claims it was one of the first GRP builders working to Dutch superyacht standards, which explains why the joinery is far better than the workboat look suggests.
Dimensions, tankage and why the numbers fit the Great Loop
Elling's factory data gives 13.80 by 4.25 by 1.20 meters, which is 45 feet 3 inches long, 13 feet 11 inches wide and 3 feet 11 inches deep. Displacement is listed at 15 tonnes, about 33,000 pounds. Diesel capacity is 1,500 liters (396 US gallons) and fresh water 850 liters on the current specification; 2009 and 2012 spec sheets quoted 800 liters.
Those dimensions matter more than they first appear. With the mast down, 3.45 meters of clearance gets you under most fixed bridges on the Great Loop and through the French canals that defeat flybridge cruisers, and 4 feet of draft keeps the Bahamas banks and the ICW open.
- LOA 45 ft 3 in (13.80 m), beam 13 ft 11 in (4.25 m), draft 3 ft 11 in (1.20 m)
- Displacement about 15 tonnes per the builder
- Fuel 1,500 L (396 US gal), water 850 L on current boats
- Bridge clearance 11 ft 4 in (3.45 m) with the mast lowered
- Bow and stern thrusters standard on current boats, hydraulic steering, 24 V system
From a 76 hp Cummins to a 600 hp Volvo, engine by engine
Because every E3 has a single main engine, the engine fitted defines the boat more than its build year. The Elling Brokerage history of the model lists the original choices as Cummins engines of 76, 180, 370 or 450 hp, with approximate top speeds of 8.5 knots, 10 to 11 knots, 13 to 14 knots and 15 to 16 knots respectively. The early cabin tops even carried decorative ribs that signaled the engine size, one rib for 76 hp, two for 180 and three for the big engines, though plenty of owners ordered the three-rib look regardless. Some boats built between 1998 and 2004 received a 480 hp Volvo TAMD74 with electronic controls.
In 2006 Elling moved to common-rail diesels and, after supply problems with Cummins, switched its main supplier to Volvo Penta. The 435 hp Volvo D6 became the most common E3 and E4 engine from that period, though the brokerage notes that American and Norwegian buyers often stayed with Cummins. Current factory choices run from a 180 hp Volvo D4 with a 10 knot maximum to a 480 hp D6, a 550 hp Cummins QSB 6.7 or a 600 hp Volvo D8, the bigger units isolated by an Aquadrive. The optional 30 hp auxiliary engine has its own fuel tank, batteries, saildrive and folding prop.
Elling's published figures are the useful planning numbers: 1 liter per nautical mile at 7.5 knots (about 2 US gallons per hour) for roughly 1,500 nautical miles of range, and 3.8 liters per mile at 16 knots in semi-displacement mode, which cuts range to about 400 miles. Factory specs list 18 knots maximum and the US representative quotes up to 20 knots with the largest engines, so treat anything above the mid teens as engine and load dependent.
A wheelhouse on top, a real saloon underneath
The E3 has no flybridge. You step from the aft deck into a raised wheelhouse with a leather helm seat, companion seating, three wipers and a large electric sliding roof that turns it into an open bridge on a fine day. Below and forward is the lower saloon with a curved settee, dining table and a pop-up television. The galley is a separate full-size space with Corian counters, a four-burner hob, combination oven and microwave, full-height fridge-freezer and, famously, a wine store under the floor.
Accommodation is arranged like a sailing yacht's. The owner's cabin is full beam and aft, under the cockpit, where motion is lowest. A forward cabin can have twin berths, a double with settee or a double plus a single. The side space to starboard, which Elling calls the utility room or garage, can be finished storage, a twin-bunk cabin or an office whose desk converts to a berth. One full bathroom with a separate shower is standard and a second can be added.
Challenger, Executive and Ultimate: decoding listing names
Used E3s are almost always advertised with a trim name, and the archived Neptune Marine spec sheets explain them. Challenger was the standard boat. Executive added a 5.5 kW Onan generator, a washer-dryer or dishwasher and a ceramic cooktop in place of gas. Ultimate added a stern thruster, a teak deck, the generator, both the washer-dryer and the dishwasher, and the ceramic hob. Current boats list Challenger and Ultimate editions, with Ultimate also bringing Flexiteek decks, a bimini, an aft camera and extra lithium batteries.
Look also for 'stabiliser' in the listing title; on a narrow semi-displacement hull a rotor or fin system is a meaningful upgrade at anchor.
E3 or E4: the same boat with a different stern
The two models are close relatives. The brokerage history explains that an E3 owner wanted a second bathroom without losing space, so in 2003 Elling decided to build a longer version. The E4 runs 14.95 meters, deliberately kept under 15 meters so owners can navigate the Rhine without a professional Rhine license, and Elling says its deckhouse, saloon, side cabin, forward cabin and forward bathroom are the same as the E3's. The extra length, about 4 feet according to Elling Yachts USA, goes into the cockpit and owner's cabin.
In 2025 Elling gave both boats their first major facelift in more than 25 years. Working with Vripack on a new wheelhouse mold, the yard added a styled radar arch that also replaces the old sprayhood, widened the rear wheelhouse window and moved the folding mechanism out of the wheelhouse, while keeping the fold-down function that makes canal passages possible. That makes the arch the quickest way to spot a 2025 or later boat.
Buying a secondhand E3 without paying for someone else's options
E3s are mostly sold in the Netherlands, Germany, Scandinavia and the UK, so many American buyers will be importing. MBY's used boat report featured a 2005 E3 at 240,000 pounds through Ancasta in Falmouth, and the Elling Brokerage site recently showed a 2001 E3 Ultimate at 229,000 euros, a 1999 E3 Ultimate with stabilizer and a 450 hp Cummins at 289,000 euros and a 2006 E3 Ultimate at 339,000 euros. Expect to add shipping, survey, duty and a 60 Hz electrical conversion when you budget a European boat.
The best value usually sits with a post-2006 common-rail boat that has the Ultimate specification, the auxiliary engine and a stabilizer, because retrofitting those later costs more than the price gap. Elling Yachts USA in Annapolis now represents the factory in America.

How much does a Elling E3 cost?
Elling quotes new E3s individually and publishes no list price, so new figures are left blank here. On the factory-linked brokerage, a 2001 E3 Ultimate asked 229,000 euros, a 1999 E3 with stabilizer 289,000 euros and a 2006 E3 339,000 euros, VAT paid, which is roughly $250,000 to $400,000 before shipping to the US. Engine size, common-rail versus older Cummins power, stabilizers and the second bathroom move prices more than age does.

Our verdict on the Elling E3
The Elling E3 is a specialist that happens to be easy to live with. It will not wow a dock party the way a flybridge cruiser does, and its narrow hull and single bathroom feel dated beside a modern trawler. But very few 45 footers combine an ocean rating, a fold-down profile for canals, 1,500 miles of economical range and a real separate galley, and fewer still are still built by the original yard. Buy one with a common-rail engine, the Ultimate specification and the wing engine, and you have a boat that can go from the Hudson to the Bahamas to the Erie Canal without changing its character.
Elling E3 questions answered
What is the range of the Elling E3?
Elling quotes about 1,500 nautical miles at 7.5 knots, burning roughly 1 liter per mile from its 1,500 liter tanks. At 16 knots the figure drops to about 400 miles.
How fast is an Elling E3?
It depends on the single engine fitted. Early 76 hp boats topped out near 8.5 knots, while 450 to 600 hp boats reach the mid to high teens, with the factory quoting 18 knots maximum.
Is the Elling E3 a trawler?
It is a semi-displacement pilothouse cruiser rather than a full-displacement trawler, built to CE Category A (Ocean) with a Kevlar-reinforced hull.
What is the difference between the Elling E3 and E4?
The E4 is about 4 feet longer at 14.95 m, and the extra length goes into the cockpit and owner's cabin, allowing a second bathroom. The deckhouse, saloon and forward accommodation are shared.
Who builds the Elling E3?
Elling Shipbuilding B.V. in Aalst, the Netherlands, formerly Neptune Marine Shipbuilding, which launched the first E3 in 1998.
How much does a used Elling E3 cost?
Recent European listings ran from about 229,000 to 339,000 euros for 1999 to 2006 boats, roughly $250,000 to $400,000 before import costs; newer boats ask more.
