A Seattle company founded in 2011 that sells full-keel, single-diesel trawlers built at a dedicated yard in China, with Pacific Northwest commissioning and support.
Helmsman Trawlers, founded in Seattle in 2011 by Scott and Lisa Helker, imports full-keel single-engine trawlers from 31 to 46 feet. The 43E Pilothouse is its best-known two-stateroom cruiser.
Helmsman Trawlers has an unusual origin. Just before the 2008 recession, Scott Helker and his wife bought a Chinese-built Mariner Seville 37 Pilothouse and were impressed by how well it was built. When Mariner failed in the downturn, the Helkers founded Helmsman Trawlers in Seattle in 2011, using the same mold and the same yard to create the Helmsman 38. Scott Helker also co-founded Waterline Boats, a Seattle brokerage that acquired the old Camano tooling, which became the basis for the Helmsman 31 Sedan.
Soundings describes the business model plainly: the boats are built at a dedicated yard in China, and components sourced by the Seattle headquarters are shipped over for installation. That lets Helmsman specify the equipment US owners want, including Cummins common-rail diesels, Side-Power bow and stern thrusters, Webasto heating and cooling and Magnum inverters, as standard rather than as options.
Helker is blunt about what he will and will not build. When customers ask for taller boats, twin engines or more staterooms, the answer is no; in his view a trawler without a full keel and a protective skeg is not a trawler. The range runs from the Camano-derived 31 to the 38 Sedan, 38E Pilothouse, 43 Sedan, 43E Pilothouse and the 46 Pilothouse, all on semi-displacement hulls with soft chines, a deep forefoot and a full keel, and all able to run faster than hull speed when needed.
The Helmsman Trawlers 43E Pilothouse is the model we cover. Developed from the 38 and in its second generation since 2022, it stretches to 45 ft 6 in overall with a full-beam salon, two staterooms plus a day head, molded stairs to the flybridge and a single Cummins QSB 6.7. Helmsman listed it at $739,000 in 2026 with a 380 hp engine, while PassageMaker's 2025 test boat had the 250 hp version. BoatTEST members named it Best Coastal Cruiser in 2022, and the 38E won the People's Choice Award at Trawlerfest in 2019.
Helmsman is a young brand, so the used market is thin and concentrated in the Pacific Northwest, with growing numbers on the East Coast and Great Lakes. Values have held well because new prices undercut Nordic Tugs, American Tugs and Kadey-Krogens of similar size. Every new boat comes with systems training, a 12-month general warranty and a 36-month hull and deck warranty, and Waterline Boats can handle trade-ins.
