The Bering 145 in one paragraph

The Bering 145 is the largest yacht Bering Yachts has delivered so far: a 44.46-meter, 499 gross ton explorer with a full-displacement steel hull, an aluminum superstructure, an ice belt, and twin Caterpillar C32 diesels working alongside a diesel-electric hybrid system. It sleeps 12 guests in six cabins, carries 70,000 liters (about 18,500 gallons) of fuel, and Bering quotes a range of more than 4,000 nautical miles at a 12-knot cruise with a 15-knot top speed.

That is the brochure. The more interesting story is how a yard best known for 20 to 25 meter steel trawlers built a tri-deck superyacht that stays just under the 500 GT line, and what a buyer should know before signing for one. Searchers typing bering 145 usually want one of three things: the specs, the story of hull one, Heeus, or a sense of cost. This page covers all three.

Seven years from first contract to Heeus

The B145 is older on paper than in the water. In February 2017 Bering announced the sale of a second B145 hull only six months after the first, describing a tri-deck passagemaker for high latitudes with exterior lines by Sabdes Design. That second client was an avid diver who asked for a dive center with a decompression chamber in the beach club, a sauna and spa, and extra sound insulation.

The hull that reached the water first was Heeus. Bering launched her at its Antalya yard at the end of April 2022, ran a two-day sea trial on July 4 and 5, 2022, and handed her to her owner in May 2023. Robb Report's Monaco and Cote d'Azur edition named her Best of the Best 2023 in its explorer yacht category, singling out the beach club with hammam, the marble-bathroomed cabins, the ice belt and the hybrid drive.

A further hull had its hull and superstructure joined in March 2023 with delivery planned for 2024. Then, in December 2024, Bering announced that Heeus's owner had ordered another 145 after a year of chartering the first one in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean. Treat the model as semi-custom and low volume: each boat follows the same naval architecture but differs in layout and equipment.

Why 499 gross tons is the number that matters

Bering sized the 145 at 499 GT on purpose. Staying below 500 gross tons keeps a yacht under the threshold where crew certification, manning rules and safety requirements step up sharply under most flag states and codes. For an owner that means a smaller, less expensive crew structure and a simpler compliance path, while still getting a 9.7-meter beam and three decks plus a flybridge.

Bering's spec sheet lists classification as Pleasure Class, or BV or RINA charter class, and the choice matters later. Heeus has been chartered, which requires the commercial rules to be met from the start. A buyer planning to charter, as the repeat client clearly does, should settle class, flag and the commercial code before the steel is cut rather than retrofit compliance afterward.

Twin C32s plus a diesel-electric hybrid drive

Power comes from twin Caterpillar C32 ACERT engines rated at 1,200 bhp at 1,800 to 2,100 rpm, a B-rated, variable-speed specification chosen for long duty cycles rather than peak output. On top of that sits a hybrid system: electric motors fed by a battery bank that is recharged by high-efficiency variable-speed DC generators. Bering says docking and mooring are possible in electric mode, and Robb Report noted Heeus can cruise electrically for several hours. Bering's 2017 release for the second hull specified a conventional diesel drivetrain instead, which shows how much the propulsion package can vary by contract.

During the July 2022 sea trial, Bering reported each engine burning 58.9 gallons per hour at maximum rpm of 1,925 and 1,905, about 118 gallons per hour for the pair at full power. Stabilization is by ABT TRAC digital electric fins, commissioned on the second day of trials along with the bow thruster.

Range figures in Bering's own material are inconsistent. The current model page quotes 70,000 liters of fuel and more than 4,000 nautical miles at 12 knots, older releases cite 95,600 liters and 5,000-plus miles, and one early announcement claimed more than 12,000 miles in hybrid mode at 9 knots. Plan on the conservative 4,000-mile figure and ask for the fuel curve of the specific hull.

Owner forward on the main deck, five suites below

The master stateroom sits forward on the main deck and spans the full beam, with windows Bering puts at more than 9.5 square meters. On the second hull Bering described it as three zones, with a private bar, a lounge and a sleeping area, plus a fold-down balcony. Aft of it is a large saloon with dining for 12 and a lounge.

Five guest suites with en suite marble bathrooms are on the lower deck, along with the crew mess and four crew cabins. The upper deck holds the wheelhouse, the captain's cabin and a sky lounge with a second dining table, and its open aft deck carries tenders up to about 8 to 8.5 meters. The flybridge has a Jacuzzi, sun pads, a bar and a gas grill.

Crew numbers in Bering's own documents range from nine to twelve depending on the version, and Yachting reported quarters for 10 on Heeus. Confirm the crew plan before you commit, because crew cost is the single biggest line in the operating budget.

  • Main deck: full-beam master forward, saloon with 12-seat dining, aft deck dining
  • Lower deck: five guest suites, crew mess and four crew cabins, storage of about 32 square meters
  • Upper deck: wheelhouse, captain's cabin, sky lounge, tender deck
  • Flybridge: Jacuzzi, bar, grill and sun pads
  • Stern: beach club of about 40 square meters with sauna or hammam, garage of 25 to 30 square meters

A beach club built around diving

The stern is where the 145 earns its explorer label. Heeus has a beach club Bering puts at about 40 square meters, a sauna and a garage behind it of more than 25 square meters with a fold-down door and a diving compressor. The second-hull specification went further, with a full dive center and decompression chamber. For owners who want to dive remote reefs without a support vessel, that is a rare feature at this size.

Add the ice belt, the long range and the 9-foot draft, and the boat is plausibly suited to high latitudes as well as the Caribbean. Bering has not published any polar voyage by a 145 in the sources we read, so treat the ice belt as capability rather than proven history.

What the charter year says about the boat

Heeus spent her first seasons working. Bering lists visits to Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Antigua, the British Virgin Islands, St. Barths and St. Martin, and in January 2024 the yard launched Bering Charter, offering Heeus and the B92 Papillon in the Caribbean winter season with rates starting from $48,300 plus expenses. Bering also offers extended sea-trial cruises of three or four days and reimburses the charter fee if the guest signs a build contract.

The strongest endorsement is the repeat order. An owner who has run a 145 commercially for a year knows its real operating costs, crew demands and guest feedback, and he ordered a second one. That is better evidence than any brochure, though it comes from Bering's own announcement.

Contracting, surveying and running a 44-meter explorer

There is no list price. Expect a semi-custom contract with staged payments, owner input on interior layout and equipment, and a build of roughly two years from keel to launch based on the timelines Bering has published. Hire an independent surveyor with steel superyacht experience, specify the classification society and flag at contract, and insist on witnessing sea trials with fuel-flow data.

Operating budgets for a 499 GT yacht with a crew of nine to twelve typically run into seven figures a year once crew salaries, insurance, dockage, fuel, maintenance and yard periods are added. Our estimate for a Bering 145 is roughly $1.8 million to $3.2 million a year before depreciation, lower if the boat is chartered to offset costs. Steel hulls need disciplined coatings maintenance, and the aluminum-to-steel joint, which Bering makes with TRICLAD bonded transition strips, should be inspected at every major yard period.

How much does a Bering 145 cost?

New, typical sail-away$20M to $30M
Used, typical asking$16M to $24M
Yearly running costs$1.8M to $3.2M

Bering does not publish prices and builds every 145 to contract, so these are our estimates for a 499 GT steel explorer from a Turkish yard, not quoted figures. Classification (pleasure class versus BV or RINA charter class), the hybrid package, the dive center and interior specification move the price by millions. No Bering 145 had traded on the open brokerage market in the sources we checked, so used values are an informed guess based on comparable 40 to 45 meter explorers.

Rivals to consider

Sanlorenzo 500Exp

Italian 47-meter explorer with a larger helideck-style aft deck and stronger European brand recognition, at a significantly higher price.

Sanlorenzo 52Steel

Larger steel displacement yacht with more volume and a conventional superyacht layout rather than an explorer focus.

Majesty 140

A faster composite tri-deck from Dubai with more speed but far less range and no ice-class ambitions.

Damen Yachting SeaXplorer series

Purpose-designed expedition yachts from a major Dutch shipbuilder, generally larger and pricier, with polar credentials and a global service network.

Our verdict on the Bering 145

The Bering 145 is a serious steel explorer at a size where most rivals are either fast composite tri-decks or far more expensive Northern European builds. Its strengths are real: 499 GT, a 9.7-meter beam, an ice belt, long range, a genuine dive-oriented beach club and a year of charter work behind hull one. Its weaknesses are mostly about information, with inconsistent fuel, range and crew figures across Bering's own documents and no resale history. Buy one only with an experienced owner's representative, a fixed specification in the contract and class chosen at the start, and it can be a lot of explorer for the money.

Bering 145 questions answered

How long is the Bering 145?

Bering lists the 145 at 44.46 meters (about 145 feet 10 inches) overall with a 9.7-meter (31 feet 8 inches) beam and a 2.75-meter (9-foot) draft. Some launch material quoted 44.2 meters.

What is the range of the Bering 145?

Bering quotes more than 4,000 nautical miles at a 12-knot cruise on 70,000 liters of fuel. Earlier releases claimed up to 5,000 miles with a larger fuel capacity, so confirm the figure for any specific hull.

How many guests does the Bering 145 carry?

Twelve guests in six cabins, with the master on the main deck and five suites on the lower deck, plus crew quarters for about nine to ten.

What engines power the Bering 145?
