From Pacific Northwest yard to superyacht series

Westport traces its history to 1964 in Westport, Washington, where the yard began building fiberglass boats. Over decades it grew into one of the largest builders of composite yachts in North America, with production facilities in Washington State and sales and service headquarters now in Fort Lauderdale.

Westport's breakthrough was applying production discipline to superyachts. Instead of building every yacht from scratch, it built a series of proven hulls and layouts, refining them over time. Owners get a yacht that is fully proven before delivery, delivered on schedule, with predictable costs. The company's motto, On Time, On Budget, As Promised, sums up the approach.

Why the Westport 112 matters

The Westport 112, which we cover in depth, is the boat that made the brand. It is a raised pilothouse motor yacht with a flybridge in the 112-foot class, developed with designer Jack Sarin in 1998 and built in significant numbers over many years, roughly 65 to 70 hulls, which made it the most built yacht over 100 feet. It is no longer in production. Its long production run means buyers have a large pool of comparable boats to evaluate, and crews and service yards know the systems well.

Today Westport's current range includes the W117 and W135 raised pilothouse models and the W172 tri-deck. The W117 and W135 evolved from the same thinking as the 112.

Composite construction keeps these yachts lighter than comparable steel or aluminum boats, which supports cruising speeds in the low 20s for many models and more efficient fuel use.

Westport resale and survey checks

Westports hold value well for superyachts, thanks to the brand's reputation, the series-built consistency and their popularity in the US charter and private markets. As with any yacht this size, the captain's records and maintenance history are central to a purchase.

  • Review full engine and generator logs, especially MTU major services.
  • Survey stabilizers, thrusters and hydraulic systems.
  • Inspect paint, fairing and composite structures.
  • Check classification and charter compliance if relevant.
  • Review interior refits and the condition of AV and HVAC systems.
